Ok folks you know CB likes his bad asses in film. Well Mike Brennan might be the baddest of the bad. Nick Nolte gives us a big sweaty, mean, nasty piece of work. Nick stands into the role. He doesn’t hold back or censor his performance.
Everyone in the story is scared of the guy. Criminals, prostitutes, other cops, the Mob. CB was scared shitless. The actors looked legitimately terrified of Brennan in the scenes. That’s how real Nick made the character. Overweight, ill fitting suits, and a moustache that made him look like a land walrus. The way he carries himself, his walk, give him a presence that says “I’m top dog. Don’t get on my bad side”.
I like Nolte’s work and as Mike Brennan he does one of his best roles. The grim reaper just more grim. Uncouth, ignorant, bent and fucking nuts. He looks crazy. One of the dirtiest cops ever in film. This kind of work can get overlooked because there is nothing about the character to like. He makes things uncomfortable for the other characters and us, the audience.
Tip my hat to Nick for his work. And hey if Mike Brennan moves to your town, pack up and find a new place to live. He’s not a nice guy.
“You fuck with me, better you piss a kidney stone through your hard on”
Nick Nolte aka Mike Brennan is a very difficult bad guy to like. I have liked other bad guys in movies and good TV productions. I thought Michael K Williams ‘Omar’ in The Wire was likeable, much to the horror and disdain of some friends. The trouble with Mike Brennan is that he had not even a smidgen of a redeeming feature. Nick Nolte portrayed the character so well it was almost impossible to remember that it was film and not *real*. A tingles down the spine movie but for the wrong reasons.

Nothing to like in the character Queen. You hit the nail on the head with “real”. I think the actors on set would have been scared of him. Nolte had that guy down to bone and probably lived him for the time of the shoot
I have heard of the Wire but dont get around to much TV even when folks i respect recommend good stuff. A time thing. You have me very curious on “Omar” Just the name conjures up stuff.

From Wikipedia ‘The Wire is an American crime drama television series created and primarily written by author and former police reporter David Simon. The series was broadcast by the cable network HBO in the United States. The Wire premiered on June 2, 2002, and ended on March 9, 2008, comprising 60 episodes over five seasons. The idea for the show started out as a police drama loosely based on the experiences of his writing partner Ed Burns, a former homicide detective and public school teacher’. I saw it in 2008-2010 when it came to the BBC. I recently watched it again during the first (2020) lockdown – in a binge style. It stands the test of time. The series makes one think about several social issues including crime, political/ corporate corruption, although it does have some funny moments. British actors Dominic West and Idris Elba take two of the leading roles. Wendell Pierce and Clarke Peters were *discovered* as a result of The Wire.

Thanks Queen. The writing comes from a very real place. Those people usually hit it on the head. I have a few reporter authors that I follow. I like the humor as you know. Thanks again.

I’ll look for this one. Never saw it. By the way, doesn’t Ethan Hawke nowadays look a lot like Nick did back then? To me, he does.

Nolte strikes me as a very “intense” actor. I’ve seen various pictures with him, though I’m blanking on the titles. This all dates back many years. I don’t watch many movies these days!

Never seen that one. Nick has a pretty good batting average with me. There’s scene in here where he intimidates the mob guys. He’s bad.

He looks so much like Josh Brolin in American Gangster. It’s uncanny. This looks really good and I would like to see it.

It’s the stash that does it. Josh is good. Lots to like in the film, maybe a bit dated now but some really good work and Lumet is a top director in my book. If you like good no holds bar work , Nick nails it. Scary character.

I don’t watch that many movies these days, but I’ll keep an eye out for it. I loved Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico and above all – 12 Angry Men and many others of his.

I love Nick being Nick. He still has some of that menace in Walk In The Woods.
I don’t know where you find these off the radar movies…but keep them coming. Bailey will be home Friday from Germany…we will need some movies.

I know you two are familiar with Lumet so I think you’ll find lots to like. Brennan is about as far from civilized as you can get and Nick brings him to life. Every scene hes in you know something is going to happen and probably not good. but great acting in my opinion.

Never seen this, the trailer almost reads like a spoof of US cop action movies from the time!

Not a ton of action mainly Nolte’s character being a big bent sweaty mess with a screw loose. I think I read or heard him say this was his fave role. He also said Brando loved it. If you like unapologetic work (and I know you do) this is for you.

big bent sweaty, violent mess with a screw loose – nah sorry CB, I watch films for escapism – not to look in the mirror!
