Single : Because The Night – Patti Smith Group

Here’s a take I did for hanspostcard’s singles picks.

Two outcasts come up with ‘Because The Night’. Pattie Smith and Bruce Springsteen create one of my favorite songs. It never fails to move me and get my attention.

Back when, Bruce was forever giving songs to people (That was just the kind of guy he was). In this case it was a collaboration and Patti and him struck lightning. This song is full of passion, power and all sorts of things that make it a special song. What a well written and performed cut.

It opens with some subtle piano with Patti joining in on vocals. Sounds like a plea then it explodes into a full forced gale of passion. I like everything about this song. Smith’s words are so good and they mesh with the music. This is a rock song sung with feeling. And the song does rock, one of the reasons I like it. Bruce is a rocker and so is Patti and her band. The song just keeps building like it’s going to explode which it kind of does. Smith songs with that passion I mentioned. She commits to the emotion of it.

I heard Springsteen do this live in the 70’s and to me it was one of many highlights of his show (ears still ringing from the guitar solo). Flip a coin on what version I dig most. They are both so good.

Bruce and Patti hook up for a night of passion. Man do they find it.

I really like Patti Smith and this song didn’t do anything to diminish that. This goes on the repeat listen spins.

‘So touch me now, touch me now, touch me now”

Well CB, she was certainly the original “up yours” chick, underarm hair and all. The original bad girl of rock, maybe it was she that inspired the Springsteen song ” Born To Run.” I never owned her albums, but did like some of her work. You have a long arm when reaching into the time vault. Good stuff.

I really like her Phil. She is a cool person. She has a great covers album you might dig called ‘Twelve’.

Great pick, CB, agree with everything you wrote. In fact, I knew Patti Smith’s version first before I heard the original and for a long time simply assumed “Because the Night” was her song!

Then I got Springsteen’s excellent box-set “Live 1975–85” at around the time it was released (Nov 1986). This really started by journey of exploring the Boss’s earlier songs (prior to “Born in the U.S.A.”). “Because the Night” was only one of the revelations. I had not known about the origins of “Spirit in the Night” and “Fire” either!

Happy New Year and keep ’em comin’!

Discovering all those songs must of been like a treasure hunt. I actually heard ‘Fire’ by Robert Gordon before I ever heard Bruce’s version (Probably told you that already). A few others in that boat. Greg Kihn for one. You too fella.

No kidding. When I was looking around at where this tune has been, I watched a version Patti, Bruce and U2 did. Killer. I love that gal.

“Because The Night” was the biggest song of her career (but not the best). I like the first underground singles and “Horses”. As you can hear in the concert from the Albert Hall in October 2021, the 75-year-old doesn’t differ in terms of timbre or strength from the youthful version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mkigMx5fvk

Yeah, good tune. Maybe I don’t love it to quite the same level as you but it’s a good song. You’re right in that Bruce would sometimes just hand them off. No dummy. He gets royalties, gets his name out there. The Pointer Sisters did a nice version of “Fire,”

He gave so many away. This was a collaboration between the two. I always connect ‘Fire’ to Robert Gordon. Back in my more fanatical days I searched high and low for ‘Rendezvous’ by Greg Kihn.

Robert Gordon, sure. But it’s nice to hear the ladies get hot on that one. Greg Kihn. They don’t write ’em like that anymore. The fa fa song or something.

I looked up the setlist from when we saw her perform in Montreal in 2000 and, as I recalled correctly, she played this song! So good.

How many artists would give this away for anyone to finish it? Some people would consider this a career song. Patti did a great job with this one…of course. Love the dynamics of this song…and Bruce is the king of dynamics.
