Album : Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band – Against The Wind

download (75)

I’ve been a Seger fan for a long time. Back to the Bob Seger System and songs like Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man then into Get Out Of Denver, Katmandu into his great live album “Live Bullet’ then his ‘Night Moves’ album. I could have featured any of that stuff (and will and have) but I’m doing this record because it just hit me on how much I liked it.

I won’t make this long folks. Bob writes really good songs. I love his lyrics , they always conjure up so many images. He has a great rock voice. I put him in with Morrison (Listen to Shinin’ Brightly. What a feel good song this is), Springsteen, Fogerty. If he runs out of words he has no problem filling things in with some groans and wails. He feels his music.

I listened to this album a lot. Real good mix. Good up-tempo cuts like ‘Horizontal Bop’, ‘Betty Lou’s Gettin Out Tonight’, ‘Long Twin Silver Line’. Every stripper had to have ‘Strut’ on her show music (Not that CB would know anything about that). But it’s the slower tempo ones that really move me. ‘You’ll Accompany Me’, ‘Fire Lake’ and the title track. They all have that ‘Night Moves’ vibe. Bob has a kind of talk/sing style.

He has a lot of elements I like about rock n roll. Seger is a rocker. Old school. Hey he’s from the Detroit area and they know how to rock n roll there. Oh yeah, the Silver Bullet Band cook. I just recently dusted this one off and gave it a listen. Sounds just as good as I remember it. Some places better. Good music with a bunch of real good songs.

Head on down to Fire Lake with Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band

I don’t have this one but it is a great album. The only Bob I have a picked up for free and it was the live album Nine Tonight which isn’t half bad and I couldn’t beat the price.

You gotta pick up those albums if they’re around. After his mega seller ‘Live Bullet’ I guess the record company followed up with this. I vaguely remember that one but you have jogged my memory. I see it has a few songs off ‘Against the Wind’

Good CB! A review about Bob Seger was long due. A good american rock musician with a grating voice. “Against The Wind” sounds like a mixture of mainstream rock and gorgeous ballads. Musically pretty conservative. But that is exactly what distinguishes Bob Seger, what makes him honest, that he plays what he does best.

I agree Fox. Something more going on under his music. Maybe his commitment and passion. He was around a long time before he hit. Payed his dues. I really dig his early stuff. Maybe a Fox take on the first albums? Do I recall one that you did maybe?

From Bob Seger’s early albums, I like “Beautiful Loser” and “Night Moves”. Seger is a good songwriter, especially in his ballads. But sometimes he sounds a bit too much like Bruce Springsteen for me.

I like those ones to. My first exposure was ‘Seven’ i think. The Springsteen thing never rubbed me. I heard Bob first. Similarities? Yes. I thing Seger started incorporating the sax later in his music.

Yep, “Seven” is an excellent album. For the first time with the Silver Bullet Band. Of course, it’s all still Rock’n’ Roll from the 70s. And I remember that when the album came out I was drawn more to the new emerging Punk music.

Well yeah, “Get Out Of Denver” has something from “Johnny B. Good”. Dave Edmunds did a nice version of it.

Edmunds did a great cover taken from one of his really good albums. I think we talked about ‘Get It’ before.

Big album back in the day. Bob came close to being in Thunder Bay but not in a good way. This happened about n hour away from here.https://www.upi.com/Archives/1997/06/27/Bob-Seger-faces-drunk-driving-charge/5761867384000/

I’m with you, CB, and dig Bob Seger. I think “Firelake”, which got plenty of radio play in Germany at the time, may have been “my first Bob Seger song.” While like most artists with such as long recording career some of his songs were better than others, “Turn the Page”, “Katmandu”, “Old Time Rock & Roll” and, of course, “Firelake” are timeless classics.

“Live Bullet” is one of the best live albums I know. Unfortunately, I never saw Bob in concert.

He became a radio staple back then but it didnt turn me off because I liked the tunes. I was with him early in his career so I always like when people I like get rewarded for their labors. I think Bob made a few bucks.
I missed him live also Christian. I bit of a regret. Just a no frill night of rock n roll I would suspect.

It’s timeless. I remember listening to this in the late 80s to Against the Wind the song…I could relate to it at that time…now when I listen to it I still relate to it.
Fire Lake is maybe my favorite song from him…love the groove he has going on.

I listed to a lot of Bob before this album. This album just grabbed me. Hearing it with more recent ears, you’re right. I still relate. I love the positive vibe of ‘Shinin’ Brightly” plus the Van , Bruce feel to it.

Yea the first time I noticed the Bruce-Van thing in Bob’s music was Night Moves…
This is a great album though. The man worked to get where he was.

Didnt he get inspired by Bruce to write Night Moves? He certainly worked his way in like you say. I would have loved to seen him in his really early ‘Ramblin Gamblin Man’ stage. Detroit rocker.

He had to be because it was around Born to Run I believe…I believe also it was American Graffiti…as far as being young etc…

He was a rocker back then…I also liked his early version of “If I Were a Carpenter”

No problem. It’s all connected. I always thought Barry Newman would have done a lot more. He was good. I loved those American movies back then. So many scenes have stuck in my mind. They did a remake. Did you see it? I never.

No it was a made for TV movie in 1996…I never saw it.
Everytime I watch it I find something new. The connection between the DJ and him…almost Twilight Zonish.
I can’t believe Newman didn’t go on to be huge. That was my dad in the 70s…looked like him, dressed like him…the whole bit.

As you know its worth a rewatch or two.
Jagger was great and then all of a sudden Delaney and Bonnie in the middle of the desert.
The deleted scene on some prints is the Charlotte Rampling scene…where as good as I can tell…she plays death. That is my guess anyway.
I’m happy that Youtube has it. I wish my copy had that scene in.

I grew up on Bob too (my Mom, again). She had Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll on the jukebox, probably one of the most played tunes on there. I remember this album (was it a cassette? probably). You’re right, he’s old school rock, and while he maybe got a bit much for me sometimes, there is something familiar and of home in his voice.

Good old Mom. Yeah he was on the radio a lot in that era. I like your last sentence. I have on record but the cassette, 8 Track ( A no brainer) etc. are probably all covered. To much money to be made not to cover the the whole pizza.

I like Seger but always thought of him as the poor man’s Springsteen. Same kind of blue-collar rock but I always figured Bruce and his band were better. That said I got a kick-ass Seger tune in mind for one of my “From the Vault” posts.

I never got the “poorman” thing. I got the similarities, Same as Mellencamp (I think he got that handle too) and Fogerty. I’m pretty sure I heard Seger first. I had a buddy who was into him back with ‘Ramblin Gamblin Man’, ‘Nutbush era. You have me guessing on the vault thing. I will have to wait.

All my CDs (yes, old school now, remember when it was state of the art?) packed away contemplating a move and a new lifestyle, so I don’t remember which album, but when I hear “Telegraph Road” I stop whatever I’m doing and lose myself. Can’t, won’t explain, but that’s what musicians and artists do for people. Thanks for the memory jog.
