Down in the southern States the story of a couple of families connected by the same father plays out. Resentment and anger are the main emotions with no one taking the high road to heal the situation. Opportunities for reconciliation are presented but are missed, leading to tragic results.
I love everything about this film. It’s as far away from a Hollywood film as you can get. Real, truthful, low key. Jeff Nichols and his cast led by Michael Shannon make the kind of film I’m drawn to. The performances are honest and grounded. No false moves. You feel like you are there watching the story play out.
I had seen Nichol’s other films (To Shelter and Mud) and was drawn to this, his debut work. It did not disappoint. There’s a cool scene where one of the brothers is coaching the local basketball team. It is so real and says so much about life in these small towns. Nothing special just a slice of what it’s like. Wonderful in it’s simplicity.
If you want a breath of fresh air away from the usual fare, Check out ‘Shotgun Stories’ for a well told story done with care and an eye for keeping it real. It’s a film I liked a lot. The film moved me.
“You raised us to hate those boys, and we do. Now it comes to this”
Saw it years ago. Some pretty nice pictures from Arkansas, but somehow the story with the sparsely scattered scraps of dialogue doesn’t really worked for me.

Yes the dialogue was sparse Fox. I’m a big one for less words. The characters ddnt express themselves or know how to talk things out. Maybe a reason for the violence.

I don’t mind films with “sparse diologues” but this was waaay to sparse and not suspenseful enough. And with a happy ending too which I normally don’t appreciate when it comes to revenge drama / thrillers. For me was “Galveston” by the French actress and director newcomer Mélanie Laurent much, much better than Nichols’ film. Very good story and without a happy ending.

I think I have heard of ‘Galveston’. Will refresh my memory. Thanks.

Never heard of it, but far away from Hollywood sounds refreshing!

Far away from Hollywood always gets my attention. People can make films their way.

This one escaped my notice but I did go to the theater to see ‘ Take Shelter’ based on reviews. Shannon’s a good actor. I watched the ‘Boardwalk Empire’ series on HBO where he played a crazy over-the-top FBI guy. He commits to a role as you would say.

Same feel as ‘Shelter’ A little more raw. Another case of some people not being able to heal and move on. Resentments kill.

Oh yeah, Shannon in one solid actor.

Hey, CB. I absolutely loved his movie Mud. I’ll have to check this one out.

I’m trying to find ‘Mud’ for a rewatch. I feel a take coming. Great flick also. No fireworks here Neil just raw and real. You can feel the characters situations. You want so bad for them to get the thing resolved.

I have a sneaky suspicion Mars and his Gal might like this one.

This one is on the list, CB. We’ve said this before (I’m sure), but Shannon is the real deal… really great actor.
I actually watched a flick a few weeks ago that I thought might interest you – Peanut Butter Falcon with the LaBeouf lad (also great turns from Thomas Haden Church, Bruce Dern and John Hawkes). It’s got the right balance.

‘Peanut Butter’? You have me very curious. On the list it goes. Just watched the trailer, yup!
Man is it good to hear from you. Hope it is going to be a habit. These posts are better with folks like you.

I like a slow burner. Peanut Butter Falcon is on Netflix (I’m sure). Definitely worth the time.
And yeah, I intend to kick about a bit.

never heard of this one CB.
Resentment and anger in the US? a bit far-fetched if you ask me, haven’t you got anything involving aliens?

The bunch in the film cant figure it out and I think they were kinda on the same side.
Aliens? No but I watched our pal Vinnie Price do the ‘Last Man On Earth’ thing. Sort of an “aliens’ vibe. I’m thinking thats where we’re headed so I was getting tips off Vincent. I love that guy.
