CB hangs with Dan

There’s cool and then there’s Dan Hicks cool.  There’s not to many (If any) that top Dan in CB’s music world.  All I know is I’ve been hooked on his music from the day I first heard it and never tire of listening to him and his music.  I know people dig him but there isn’t a lot of us when you compare him to say …..  you know what I mean.

So to my surprise while checking out all the great music takes by the wonderful people I’ve met on this blog thing I came across another Dan Hicks admirer.  Music Enthusiast.  Needless to say he gained instant credibility with CB.  So with no more shooting my mouth off, here is a guest take by one of my favorite music guys. Music Enthusiast.  Over to you Doc.  And thanks for lending me this great piece on a guy who I wish I was half as cool as.  You and I Doc are going to start a Dan Hicks resurgence. Two fans and counting.

Thanks for the shout-out Mr. Babyhead. (In one of those odd blogger synchronicities, you’re mentioned today in my Kinks post.) The only piece of information I’d add here that I realized later is that Hicks, as a member of the Charlatans, was on the leading edge of the ’60’s San Francisco scene that included the Dead, Airplane, Joplin, etc. It took him a while to catch fire and he went in a completely different direction. But his stuff sounds as good today as it ever did.

No problem on the “shout out”. It’s just cool that you gave Hick’s and his music some ink. CB and the other millions(?) of Dan fans thank you. I’m really glad He took his music in the direction he did. It’s my style.

Dan is an acquired taste for sure. Maybe we’ll add a few more fans to his legacy.

catchgroove chimed in on the ‘Shootin’ Straight’ cut I posted. Sounds like he really liked it. I sent him over (He was probably there already) to your take to listen too ‘I Scare Myself’ and Sid Paige’s great solo.

Hi CB. I remember that Dan was a guy who toured a lot. I saw him and the Hot Licks only once. They put on a great show. I could tell that he loved what he did for a living.

    See ya’ —

CB. I like this concept. I follow ME, but have not worked through his old posts. I appreciate the highlight.

I’m finding some good stuff from the people I’ve hooked into. ME does his home work and like yourself he has listened to the music. He lets his ears do the work. I like this “concept” idea. Glad you’re enjoying it.

I discovered Hicks when I lived out in Colorado in the early ’80s. I’m guessing the Hot Licks were pretty popular there. I have the live “Where’s the Money” LP, but haven’t heard it in a while (I’ll have to pull it out and dust it off, now). I always found it interesting he was drummer in the Charlatans, one of the first Haight-Ashbury bands. I love their version of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s “Codine.” Nice to see him profiled, CB!

He was popular up and down the West Coast, Seattle, Vancouver etc.

I pushed the send to fast, anyways. That album is a good one. Good feel for him at the time. Funny he was a drummer and never used one in his bands. I never heard that ‘Codine’. Listened to it. Really good. The Buffy angle is cool and I can hear her story in the lyrics. ( That fits in with my guest take on Thursday. Cool kind of synergy) I’m listening to ‘Where’s the Money’. Yup, that sounds good to me. Thanks Pete.
