We are going to catch one of my favorite people put her spin on an old Door’s tune. And does she and her tight band do a great job. CB is a bit of a Doors freak and I think Patti is too. She’s feeling this one.
It’s sultry, sexy and it does it ever sound good to my ears. Smith is feeling the groove. Patti and the band build this one up and then release it. Fantastic. She cut an album of covers and it’s great. This is one of them. Great choice. Not a bad cut on the record.
Jools Holland had one of the best music shows ever and I’ve booked a block of seats to catch another unique musician that never fails to do it for me. Patti knows how to cover a tune. You can tell she’s enjoying this one. So am I.
We’re sailing over to England for this one (That’s where Jools hangs out). I got the captains hat on and I have the big wheel in hand. Leave all your cares behind and set the course across the Atlantic. The trip is on me. CB has salt water in his veins and rock n roll on his mind.
Patti never just sings a song. She gets into it and lives it and delivers it. I don’t care what song she does, I’m gonna listen.
She’s one of those artists that other musicians want to play for. I could go on, but I’m just gonna listen.

“Soul kitchen” is certainly not one of the great Doors songs for me, but it suits very well for Patti Smith because she usually has such an anthemic singing style.

I will agree with on your take. Something about this song fit her and she knew it.

That is a nice easy groove and yea…I like that guitar player. That seems to be a common thread of mine in these live takes… Her voice sounds fantastic on this cut… Patti is like Janis…she puts herself in the song and gives you everything she has.

I think that’s her long time guitar player Lenny Kaye. Yeah she lives the songs for sure. Like I commented earlier, you can tell she’s enjoying herself.

I think you are right that is Lenny Kaye. Her singing a Doors song fits so well. There seemed to be a kinship in styles with Morrison and her. Her voice really surprised me in this. I haven’t heard a lot of stuff by her.

There’s a couple other cuts she does off ‘Twelve’. Her ‘Gimme Shelter” is very cool. Same show. I’ve caugh ta couple interviews over the years, she’s a pretty funny unique gal. Love her musical style.

I just pulled up Twelve right now…I love her choice in covers for this. Everything from Midnight Rider to Within You Without You. Thanks CB…I’ll check this out today. She is not someone you can pin down.

You could make other choices but live a little. I’m sure Max on Wax will be finding a few gems.

This was cool. I saw Patti open for Dylan in Sydney ’98. She got heckled by some lame-arse and she went to town on this guy rebuking him like I’ve never seen since. I love her despite the fact she f/(ked up Dylan’s Nobel song. I mean who wouldn’t carry his lyrics just in case? I’ll get over it one day. I loved her rendition of ‘Holy Night’ at the Vatican.

I’d liked to have seen Patti “going to town”. I wouldn’t think she would take to much of that shit. ‘Holy Night”? I’ll check it out.
(I saw Lou Reed on a real off night. Didnt deter me to much but I waited until he cleaned up before I took the leap again)

Lou’s great. His Dylan rendition of ‘Foot of Pride well exceeded Dylan’s original which I never thought possible. After Patti scorned this guy, I reckon a legion of Dylan fans would have had their way with him. I really do. he was mince meat.

Opening for the main act is always dicey. Springsteen stopped that early in his career. He was through a few bad experiences and decided not to carry it on when he became more popular.

Yeh I get that. Patti was reciting poetry if I remember and everyone was in awe and this dip sh&t heckled her and that was that. He was toast after. I love Lou Reed’s ‘The Magic Moment’ amongst many others.

“Reciting poetry”, good thing she wasnt opening for ACDC
‘The Magic Moment”, he has so many. I’m a big Lou fan and his buddy John Cale also. Just heard a song by the Little Willies called ‘Lou Reed” You might get a kick out of it.

Patti really brings this song to life. I agree Jools Hollands shows are a treasure trove that I dig into all the time. Had not seen this performance. Sweet.

I agree Randy. You being a “cover” guy I figured you’d get it. So many good performances on Jools. Grinderman did a couple and turned some heads and ears
(Speaking of great music shows. I see we lost David Sanborn. His ‘Night Music’ was fantastic. I’m sure you’re familiar with it).

Yes I did hear about Sanborn, and you are correct.

I also dig The Doors quite a bit. “Soul Kitchen” is a cool cut. I love their first album and would grab it, if I only could pick one. I didn’t know that cover by Patti Smith and agree it’s outstanding!

How the flying flip did I miss the return of the mighty CB?!
I’ve developed more of a liking for Patti as the years pass and this is a fine choice. She often has some… ‘interesting’ takes on covers but she gets this one right on the nose.
Jools (formerly of Squeeze) is almost as much of an institution as CB over here and I’ve been turned on to many a fine act via his show and his annual Hootenanny (which used to filmed around the corner from my place).

Good to hear from you Tony. Yeah just got some inspiration listening to “Live” music so I couldnt help myself.
Seeing and hearing Patti do this, CB cant help but to be drawn in. I hear you on “developing a liking”. Watching her hear she is just digging the music so much.
The bus will be stopping by to pick you up for the next “live gig”. Maybe hit the Jools Hootenanny. That would be very cool. Maybe an early Bruce gig. Lots of great music out there.

I hope you enjoy Jools. Not sure where you are catching him. He does some recording of his shows in Maidstone Kent, which isnt far from me.

Just on the tube Queen. These “live” takes are a fantasy of mine. Tony another person I converse with catches Jools at his annual ‘Hootenanny’ over there. Hope you’re taking it cool and dancing up a storm.

That made me chuckle. I’m sure you’re tearing it up. I have Springsteen take coming up. This isnt self promotion just a personal invite to someone I know you’re not that familiar with. I think the cut might get your “mojo” working. If not I’ll …. well I dont know what I’ll do.
