Without a doubt my favorite Purple tune and just one of my favorite tunes period. My buddy had the album Machine Head. The album had some popular cuts on it. When I was at his house I would have to bribe him to play Lazy (he was stuck on Smoke On The Water and Highway Star. He was a car nut). He had a really good stereo system and he would crank this up for CB and I would soak it up. It’s a great tune.
John Lord’s organ sets it up (His solo would work in CB’s favorite Solos). You know something good is coming. It starts out a little funeral dirges (is that a word?) then he changes pace and gets into the groove and the song takes off. The rest of the boys come in, a little percussion, a touch of guitar, then Blackmore (Killer solo) kicks in. We are off and kicking. I would have been happy without lyrics on this because the groove is so good. They just keep the jam going. Ian finally pipes in and the lyrics don’t fuck it up, in fact they are perfect. Add a little harp and what we have hear is a “perfect track” (I heard someone named Young say that)
A CB theme song. Being a lover of rock n roll (music period) I could not resist this one if I tried.
When my buddy and I were on the outs and were ready to bury the hatchet he’d look at me with an illegal smile and say “Hey CB, you wanna listen to Lazy on the HI FI?”. CB was happy again.
(Check out Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Barnes doing a cover of this tune. It’s killer too)
Without a doubt, CB, a great band, a great tune, tremendous musicians, wow! Always a big fan. Great choice.

I think we’ve talked about this one before CB. A GREAT tune from the “Phantom of the Opera” beginning to the end. My theme song when I was unemployed. Probably my favorite Purple song as well. Sometimes when I pick up the guitar I’ll play something and then end it with Blackmore’s killer lick that comes at the end.

Same kind of opening as Hudson on ‘Chest Fever’

Yeah you’re right. That’s even more ‘Phantom.’ I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read about rockers from that era who were knocked out by that album. And from a country nobody had ever heard of!

My favorite thing about Purple was always Jon Lord. He made a big difference in their sound. One of tons of great songs by the band.

Brad Whitford from Aerosmith is on the track and I know you like those guys. It’s killer.
My buddy was kind of an illegal guy.

Great choice, CB. I love “Lazy” and each of the other tracks on “Machine Head,” which remains my favorite ’70s hard rock album.
I completely agree with 2loud2oldmusic’s comment. While all of Deep Purple’s members at the time of “Machine Head” were killer musicians on top of their game, Jon Lord was the stand-out who gave the band their distinct sound. He was a hell of Hammond player who benefitted from a background in classical music.
“Lazy” is a pretty remarkable tune. To me, it’s more a jazz and blues rock fusion than traditional hard rock – simply ingenious!

Yeah I was saying to Jim about the similarity with Hudson’s work on ‘Chest Fever’ .
Ive been giving the new Purple quite a few spins on your recommendation.

This is a great tune but “illegal smile” is a killer line I may have to borrow

It’s a title of a John Prine tune. He is the king of the illegal smile.

Great choice CB, nothing lazy at all about their playing on this one. Single wise I’d possibly just pick ‘Woman From Tokyo’ over it, only just.

Yeah ‘Tokyo’ is another song I randomly blurt out at times. I got that lyric down and like to strut my stuff.

Jon Lord could rock the organ in more ways than one. He turned the organ into a lead instrument. Great sounding tune CB.
