Lost And Found

Here’s a little music related story that you folks might be able to identify with.

For the longest time I’ve been looking for a piece of music (CD) that just dropped out of my pile. I couldn’t find it anywhere. I turned the house upside down looking for it. I mean I was possessed. No luck. I even started blaming people (My gal) and things or should I say animals (The cat). I’m not joking. I was getting mean.

I’m not a serious collector but over the years I have assembled a pretty good pile of music on different formats. I think a few of you folks out there know what I mean when you can’t find a record (or something less important like car keys) that has just disappeared. It becomes an obsession. This piece of music isn’t my all time favorite but it is rare , kind of an obscure one. And yes I dig it and missed it. I can probably find the music playing somewhere on the internet but that’s not the point. CB likes to go for walks and he likes to take his Discman with him. This CD was one I enjoyed strolling with.

If anyone is still around for the story (CB bullshit) the music in question is ‘The Big Gun Down – John Zorn Plays The Music Of Ennio Morricone’. Some of you will know Ennio from his soundtracks to Sergio Leone’s westerns. The Big Gun Down is Zorn’s interpretation of Morricone’s music from some of the films he scored (He scored many). It’s out there in a good way. Not traditional but with lots of musical ideas that I like. I know a few of you will really dig it.

I had this album suggested to me and am I glad I took that suggestion up. It’s got a cast of many helping out. A varied cast I might add (You can find information on the web if inclined). Shake up your listening and give The Big Gundown a listen. Mike Patton (Faith No More) helps out below.

Anyway , I love the music but the bottom line is. I found it and I am very happy. You know what I mean. I have a few amends to make. The Gal is pretty forgiving but the cat is a different story. Now i f I can just find my copy of ‘Broken English’ by Maryanne Faithful. Did I lend it to any of you? I might have got drunk and misplaced it.

      I thinks so too. I figured you might dig the Patton appearance. I love these kinds of collaborations. Musicians making music and tipping the hat to the inspiration.

    A fascinating album. The pieces are less songs than films, and have a narrative character and an atmospheric density that is hard to resist.

      When I got the music I had no idea how many soundtracks Ennio had under his belt. Zorn certainly made a “fascinating” one

        I especially like “Fantomas” and “Mr.Bungle”. The sung version of “The Ballad of Hank McCain” is also very nice, but the instrumental version would not have been necessary in my opinion.

    Great backstory CB! It’s always a great buzz to come across those albums/CD’s that impacted you years ago and than when you go on the search for it and find it…Aaron at the KMA calls it Holy Grail Items. This applies to you as well!

    Big thumbs up for Morricone, a cinematic original, and I know of John Zorn (fusion jazz?). If you can’t find your Faithfull album, I’ll send a cassette (remember those?) of her A Child’s Adventure. And if you have it, you can return the favor with a cassette of Nick Drake’s “bedroom demos,” which I think my dog ate.

    I can totally relate. I once spent two days frothing at the mouth because I was haunted by a riff that I just couldn’t place, it drove me insane because I could only remember 2 seconds of it.

    ‘Sweet Emotion’ by Aerosmith, not the main riff either.

    Anyway, I digress I love Mr Zorn, although I don’t own any.

    A timely note. My wife is a teacher and she is also a union rep. She has a negotiation coming up and she is looking for a blue folder with her notes from the last negotiation TWO YEARS AGO. When I say she is looking for it, I mean literally right now as I type this. She has turned the house upside down but has not yet gotten to the ‘blaming Doc” part. It’s rare that I go looking for an album or book. Just the other day I went looking from my wallet which I always leave in the same place and which I had (thoughtfully) left on the cup holder in the car overnight.

        Heh. When I went on that weeklong Allmans voyage, somebody in the band’s entourage gave me a pick with Dickey Betts’ name on it. Gone. I’m sure I could buy them online but that had some meaning. I should write a song called The Things We Lost (After We Spent Hours Looking For Them.)

    CB, this is hands-down one of the most hilarious posts I’ve read. Even though I’ve never met you in person, based on your writing, I could vividly picture how you were searching your place for the bloody CD.

    I’m glad your significant other seems to have a forgiving personality. I hope the cat’s gonna come around as well – maybe a little treat will go a long way. Our two cat ladies go completely nuts over canned tuna!

    I’m neither familiar with that album nor John Zorn. Unfortunately, the album isn’t on Apple Music or Spotify. I also haven’t seen any of the tracks on Zorn’s YouTube channel, though there’re plenty of other clips there, including Ennio Morricone, such as The Sicilian Clan.

    Also, have you ever heard his interpretation of the James Bond Theme? Kind of wild…

      Yeah that Zorn (with Bill Frisell) is awesome. Those guys make so much cool music. Im still catching up with it all. I know you’re getting more and more into instrumentals. Try Frisells ‘Guitar In the Space Age’. Lots of great covers. Ill be over to your place mid week. As usual.

    I always preferred Hugo Montenegro’s versions of stuff to Morricone’s. But, that’s just me.

    So…you did the big freak out, huh? Cold feeling in the pit of your stomach, rooms starts to spin… And, it’s always the cat, isn’t it?

    That sounds amazing, I understand your need to find it. My collection is alphabetized and in neat shelves, so it’s more likely I’ll forget it’s there than I’ll lose track of it completely. Nothing is outside the realm of possibility though. Good luck with the cat. If it’s anything like ours, it’ll warm up to you again eventually.

        Yes the music appeals to me. The whole idea grabbed me.
        Do you get time to listen to very much other music besides the new stuff you get behind? Which is very admirable and a cool commitment.

    Well worth the hunt, that’s a cool collection. I can identify – I’m still searching for a couple of cds that have slipped their case and seemingly vanished into the ether.

    Cats don’t forgive, forget or express much beyond disdain no matter how many times you let them in from sub-zero temperatures to laze beneath the warmth of a radiator. I’ll mail you back ‘Broken English’, you were off your tits.

    Mis-filing albums & CD’s and then trying to find them again is for me a time stealer I can really do without. I must have a proper listen to the Morricone courtesy of Spotify.

      With all the music you handle it has to happen.
      This album is hard to find as far as Morricone that should be easier. I got into Kamasi Washington’s The Epic a few years ago and one of the influences I heard in some of his music was Ennio

    I just listened to The Sicilian Clan on youtube….it sounds great but is that part of it?
    Glad you found it man!
    The first Saint Bernard I owned got into white paint when I was painting the wall and decided to step on one of my acoustic guitar cases…she is immoratlized with a huge white paw print. I was upset at the time but now I wouldn’t take anything for it.
