Music Single : Booker T & The MG’s – Time Is Tight

What a groove on this one. Infectious to a young CB. One of those tunes that made me fall in love with music. They don’t waste anytime getting into this one. Al Jackson (man do I like his playing) on skins and Duck Dunn lay it down. Booker T does his thing on that organ of his. Man does it grab me. Steve Cropper comes in with his licks that I’ve heard a million times and always anticipate.

One of those pieces of music that should be heard and not have some guy like CB trying to explain it. Just catch the groove and let it take you. What a great piece of music. Simple, catchy and so cool.

Two of my all time favorite instrumentals are by this band. Time is tight so catch this while you have a few minutes. It will be well spent. What a great tight band.

Just caught my cat groovin to this while I was listening and laying down the take.. I’m not kidding. It is kinda of a cool cat tune.

(I included a great live version. You’ll see some of the CCR boys looking on from the wings)

(Bonus cut of Neil Young wigging out with Booker T and the MG’s a few years later)

Great! The age of that track can be clearly hear in the instrumentation. The keys sound old-fashioned like the good old Hammond organ, the guitar sounds semi-acoustic. It doesn’t matter – it still remains a pearl.

Have to go back to this sound Fox just to get the feel for the feet on the ground of it all.

The piece was part of the repertoire of every dance band. Rhythm and bass line are extremely close to Otis Redding’s “I Can’t Turn You Loose.”

Agree with everything you said – such a cool tune! You know how much I love the Hammond. Steve Cropper’s fill-ins are great as well. The driving drum beat – heck, all of the musicians do a terrific job here!

And how those other two clips? Love how that live version starts slow. You can see these guys were having a ball on that stage.

And watching Neil Young rockin’ out with them with Hendrix is pretty cool as well. Have you heard Neil’s new album with Crazy Horse? So good!

Yes you can see them enjoying themselves. Makes us enjoy it more.
Yes on the Crazy Horse question. Found it on your site. And you’re right, so good!

The CCR guys like what they’re hearing. And with good reason.

I can never keep straight which is Time is Tight and which is Tighten Up. One later covered by The Clash and one later covered by Yellow Magic Orchestra.

I love that groove CB… taking a simple little riff and making it cool…we talked about this stuff …the other side of the sixties. It wasn’t all about flowers in your hair.

‘The flowers in the hair” according to a few folks back then was a bit of a dream world. What wasnt a dream world was the great music at that time.

I was pretty sure I knew what this tune was before I gave it a listen and yeah, I got it. The MG’s didn’t stray far from that three-chord thing but when they did it they did it well.

What would CB play if he had his -as we say here – druthers?

From my extensive research and talking to actual musicians (present company included), guitar or piano would be the choice BUT banging on the skins would kind of suit me (I think) BUT when I fantasize about being on stage its blowing the sax in one of those 60’s low rent strip clubs while Miss Candy Apple does her thing.

Substitute guitar for sax and that last one is how Carlos Santana got started (in Tijuana). What’s stopping you? You don’t have to be Clapton day one.

You are my go to for that kind of info. Love it. My uncle was a very good musician, mostly piano and sax but later in life he picked up the guitar and did a good job, never gave himself the credit he deserved for his playing,
Doc, Im more than happy to enjoy the music others make. You know that.

Yes indeed. So am I for that matter. I like to make it as well but sitting on my couch playing is like pissing in the wind.

In the same way CB has for ‘B’ westerns. Plus it keeps me off the street.

Time Tight. What a piece of music. Hearing this reminded me that I haven’t done a #ThrowbackThursday for ages. Time Tight would be perfect for this. As for the covers I didn’t know they existed another *school day* for DQ.

Pretty good groove for Queen to hit the dance floor. Hats off to the covers but this one is the killer. Like Fox said they got in a similar groove with Otis on ‘I Can’t Turn You loose’
