Movie : Mud

Two boys find a boat hung up in the trees on an island after a flood. We are in rural Arkansas. The boys claim this treasure as their own but are interrupted in their find by a man who is now living on the boat. The three strike up an uneasy friendship with the deal being if the boys bring him food, supplies he will leave them the boat when he goes. The boys agree and soon find out there is a lot more to the deal than they expected. Getting mixed up with this man opens up a desperate world of love and violence that takes them for a ride that is beyond their experience. Once started it is too much for them to stop. They see it through to its conclusion.

This is the third film by Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter and Shotgun Stories) that I have absolutely loved. He pulls together a great cast, location and story and makes an engaging film. Well shot, directed and performed. It feels like a documentary with no polished acting (just outstanding naturalism). The actors are put in a rural setting that feels like a slice of a life in the area. Folks trying to make a go of it in trying circumstances.

Tye Sheridan as Ellis carries the story for us. He is perfect. He is so present and truthful you believe everything he does. He doesn’t push anything. Just present in the moment of each scene and he has a lot of them with no shortage of emotional pulls. He’s just trying to work things out that are beyond him. He’s good. Jacob Lofland as Neckbone is his best friend, and they look and feel like they are tied at the hip (makes you long for your youth). Matthew McConaughey as Mud keeps it real and brings a quiet desperation to the role. Matt is good. He is focused on something that he knows he can’t posses but he ignores the warning signs. The rest of the cast are very good and keep the film on track with the earthy feel. I like these characters. There is a good soundtrack and ‘Help Me Rhonda” shows up with an interpretation of the meaning. The film plays out like a Steve Earle song.

Low key subtle film that builds to a explosive climax. It’s real, gritty, natural and truthful. I love these small American movies. Nichols could go on making these types of films and I’d watch them every time. Solid flick in my book.

I would have given anything to find a boat up in a tree when I as a kid.

“Mud. You can call me Mud”.

I liked this movie. It’s one of MM’s best efforts since Dallas Buyers Club. Good pick to review.

Never seen it, but the way you describe it, maybe I will…I will at least add it to the queue for later down the road.

I love this movie too. It’s one of my favorites from the last 20 years. It’s a high point in MM’s acting career.

I saw “Take Shelter” at the local indie theater when I came out. Michael Shannon. Good actor. Watched him later in “Boardwalk Empire” on HBO. Heard about this one, wanted to see it, forgot about it. I’ll add this one to the list.

I don’t know this movie. From the clip it looks as if it could be a modern day coming of age story? I’m probably wrong. 🤔

Sounds interesting, CB. I put that on my list. I liked Matthew McConaughey in the first season of “True Detective”.

I’ve had this on my Netflix to watch list for a couple of years – guess I should dive in and watch it…
