CBs Favorite Performances : Michael Caine – Victor

Ever watch a film and you can’t wait for a character to come on screen even if he’s a big sweaty dangerous low life? Well that’s Michael Caine as Victor in Blood And Wine. He absolutely steals the show. He teams up with Jack Nicholson to steal some priceless diamonds in this under the radar crime caper.

He plays a safe cracker with major health problems (graveyard smokers cough) and a violent mean streak. He also has a great bent sense of humor. His physical appearance is pasty white and he looks like a man on his last legs. He dyes his hair and moustache to try and help matters but just makes them even worse.

There are a couple other roles that I like Caine in (Get Carter) but this one has stuck with me. Not a huge amount of camera time but what he has he makes the most of. Jack and him have good chemistry and are believable as a couple low life losers. Plus dangerous and unstable on top of it.

Caine makes Victor real. He’s not afraid to look unflattering, disheveled and not afraid to portray a very unsympathetic character. He’s such a good actor. I loved his work in this one. He just made me want more of that dead man shuffling headcase. Have another smoke Victor, they can’t hurt you anyway.

“We’ll use a blowtorch on him”

You’re right CB, a great character actor and a great performance, a true work of art. I have to see the movie, thanks for the idea.

I haven’t seen this one CB- but Caine- well he has been consistently excellent over the years in about everything he’s been in– and kind of under the radar- he has deserved more attention than he’s received. Will have to put this on my list of movies to see.

Kind of a more modern noir film. A good crime caper flick. Good performances and I like I said, I love Caines work. He is a nasty presence.

Michael Caine is just so damned good in everything I ever saw him in. Hands down, bar none, one of the greats.

I could have saved myself a lot of typing and used your comment as the take. Perfect. He “is just so damned good” in this one.

No problem. Now, him and Morgn Freeman sat beside each other, there. Talk about tales…

Hey, CB. Caine is one of my favorite actors. Loved him in Alfie and in Educating Rita, to name two of his many movies.

He’s good Neil. I have seen him is many good ones. All the ‘Harry Palmer’ films, Get Carter, Man Who Would Be King. This role is not huge but man is he good. The guy just makes you believe everything he’s doing even if it not nice.

Yeah they work well together. What a pair of deadbeats they are in this one. I figures that Jack’s character would have a friend like Victor.

Heard of this one, never saw it. Struck me as being lesser Nicholson. Didn’t even know Caine was in it. Have to rethink it now based on what C to the B says.

Jacks early work was where I lived with him. This is one of his later ones I liked. He teams up with Rafelson again. The film is good but It’s Caine’s work that is the ticket for me. Jack and Davis are also good. Worth a watch for sure. Nice and sleazy

Great combination. Also like much of his work. The highly narcissistic Elliot in Hannah and Her Sisters is also wonderful. Although nowadays, it’s hard not to think of Coogan and Brydon impersonating him in The Trip “She was… Only… Fifteen years old”…

Loreleirvine I haven’t watched all of Michael’s work so not up on that even though it seems to get the most notice. Maybe it’s about time that I gave it a peek.

I’ve never heard of this one but, I love Caine in anything. And, Jack…he is such an icon but, he pretty much wanders thru every movie he is in as the same character. The only thing he does differently is voice. He can be loud Jack or he can be quiet Jack. He is always Jack. LOL! Reminds me of Tom Cruise. He is Tom in every movie…mad Tom, happy Tom, sad Tom, drunk Tom, crying Tom…

I’ve just seen an interview where he was saying he’s probably made his last film. I haven’t seen this one, but the interview made me think about him in ‘Clue’. Ever see that one? great movie.

This one now is on the list…Nicolson and Caine…how could I not watch it?
I appreciate it CB. I’m getting back into Rockabilly streak…reading about the Beatles early days and the influences…Skiffle music and Rockabilly from Gene Vincent and Carl Perkins.

They are a couple of real low life beauties.
Rockabilly for me its the beginning of this music we love. Rock n roll. Those two you mentioned and a hand full of a few others and away we go.
