A Mexican crime boss offers a million dollars for the head of Alfredo Garcia. the man who impregnated his teenage daughter. Two hitmen hired to find Garcia go into a cantina in Mexico City and question the patrons about Alfredo. Bennie an American lounge singer in the bar knows Alfredo but doesn’t cop to the hitmen. Later on Bennie finds out from his girlfriend that Alfredo is dead. Bennie sees a an opportunity to make a few $$$. Go get Al’s head, “He isn’t using it anymore”. Thing is, Bennie isn’t the only one after the head of Alfredo Garcia. It’s a race to get the head and stay alive.
You want a low rent, road movie Sam Peckinpah style this is for you. I saw this back when and it was right up my alley. This was before CB knew what a cult movie was. Since that time that “cult” tag is hung on the film. It’s rough, unpolished, dirty, dusty, violent, funny. And I liked it. Off the wall and certainly not a mainstream Hollywood movie. Sam couldn’t do it any other way.
First thing Sam did was to hire Warren Oates as the lead. About as far away from a leading man, box office draw as he could get. I love Warren and he brings his rumpled natural self to the role of Bennie, a low rent piano playing singer down on his luck (with a huge pair of shades). Getting Al’s head is Bennie’s ticket out of shitsville and into the bigtime. Bennie justifies getting the head saying to his girlfriend “Al wanted you do be happy didnt he?”
This is the kind of film I really like. Appeals to my film tastes. Sleezy off the wall crime flick with lots of humor. Low rent lead character. So many good scenes. Oates singing ‘Guantanamera’ is a keeper. Talking to the head as he’s driving. Trying to be inconspicuous with a head in a bag with every fly in Mexico buzzing around it. I rewatch this stuff just to remind me of the stuff that shaped my likes. Good simple story, get Alfredo’s head.
Take a ride through Mexico with Sam, Warren and a bag with a head in it (Along with a couple flies), The film gets bumpy but I didn’t mind. The only thing that gets dirtier that Bennie’s piece of shit car is Bennie’s white leisure suit. I’m just glad they weren’t after Cincinnati’s head.
‘You two are definitely on my shit list”
Nice one CB. I’ve always wanted to see this just for the amazing title.

I think Sam went as far into Mexico as he could to film this so the producers couldnt see what he was doing with their money. I loved it.

I’ve heard of this and randomly like to quote the title. So if I’m downstairs, the better half might yell, Can you bring me? and I’ll say The Head of Alfredo Garcia? And yet I’ve never seen it. CB approved? On the list.

Its one of those 70s films we like. Rough as hell but that was Sam. Good one on the call and response with the better half.

I got one for ya. We watched ‘Argo’ last night, the Affleck-directed movie about getting hostages out of Iran. Saw it in the theater but couldn’t recall it. Taut and exciting all the way through to a rip-roaring climax. Your humble little country is involved but frankly, kinda gets short shrift. Went looking for it on your site but no go.

I have heard and will search it out. Thanks. I like that style. I need to watch more current films once in a while (I do). I havent seen a lot of Ben films. I remember being curious about this one. I remember when that incident took place.
Since I went all political with ‘Man For All Seasons’ I’ll do it again with ‘Ghost Writer’. I think Doc would approve. Polanski with heavy Hitchcock vibe.

Gotcha on ‘Writer.’ Saw it at the theater with a couple of chums. Kim Cattrall as I recall. Forgot about it. Good flick.

I was telling you about Oates singing ‘Guantanamera ‘after you did the take on the song. Not a real top notch version but it works for the film.

It’s rough around the edges deKE. Just the way I like it. Oates just gets dirtier and dirtier as he hauls Al’s head around.
How is that Narcos? Like Breaking Bad?

Narcos and Narcos Mexico the Netlix series are worth watching. So much so that we are watching it twice. Very well done CB.

I vaguely remember this film name. Are you, by chance, a Quentin Tarantino flick type?

Yes I do like a couple of his films. Im all over the map with what I watch.. Tastes vary. But I do like these off the mainstream unpolished films.

Nope. And, I can tell one of his movies right off the bat…bloody, disgusting violence, everyone’s dialog of cursing is over the top and plenty of snarky, unlikable characters. I think director Matthew Vaughn is a big fan of his.

The film hasn’t lost nothing of its fascination. There is this double moral in all phases in the formal as well as in the selection of characters: the idyll is closely rooted with the horror.

Good stuff Fox. Sam took his cast and crew as far away from the executives as he could and did it his way. Man I would have liked to been on that shoot.

What Peckinpah did was basically a cinema of disillusion at least in his three films: “The Wild Bunch”, “Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid” and “Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia”

Sam has a high batting average with me. Ive probably done more takes on his films than any other director. Kinda shows you where my heads at.

Its rough, dirty, crude and I love it. Good thing it didnt come with “Smellavsion”. I think Oates gave Al’s head a shower.

I saw this last night and I loved it…you are batting a 1000. I like how it is slower paced and builds the story. Peckinpah used silence between dialog like no other if that makes sense. Oats was great and so was the character Elita. I think I’m in love…Isela Vega was wonderful.
The ending was what I expected…I knew he couldn’t get that lucky.

Do you remember when I mentioned this movie when you did a ‘Zone’ episode with Gig Young well this was the one with him playing a hit man.
Grainy cinematography. The father at the end was the same actor who played the General in the Wild Bunch. He did the same way in both. You knew Bennie was going to snap. Glad you liked this old “cult” gem. Eta was perfect. Sam loved Mexico and the people.

Yes I do… I like when directors use some of the same actors throughout their movies. Many times for a similar part… you feel like you know them already.
I was blindsided by Kris being in this…I just forgot he was in it. I love the grainy film and the realism.
“You take care of the boy and I’ll take care of the father”…. love that.

I didnt mention KK just so u would get the surprise. Sam used him a few times also. The other biker was a guy named Donnie Fritts buddy of John Prines. Musician also.
Sam was such a good writer. Kept it real and language he knew.
