Fox, Frank and Me

CB did a take on Frank Zappa’s ‘Apostrophe’ way back when he started this take thing. Not a lot of bites.

I’m a regular visitor to hotfox63 . He has eclectic tastes in music and hits so many notes with me. I’ve enjoyed our swapping of thoughts over the past few years. Plus he has steered me to some great music.

In our conversations we seem to spend a lot of time on Frank Zappa. We both like his music. So Fox says “We should do a take together on Frank”, I say “Sure, how about ‘Apostrophe?”. Fox says “OK”. It was as time consuming as that.

So check out the link below if you are interested on what we came up with. A little journey into the “Land of imaginary diseases”

One of these days I’m going to need to take a deep dive on Zappa. There is so much though!

Really hard to find an entry point. This album was my portal. Like Fox says in the first paragraph of the piece, Zappa’s back and forth really alienates folks. Check out what he came up with Mars its short and sweet.

Hi. I know that Zappa was brilliant. But I never connected too much with his music. I should give him a try again.

Maybe some day a piece of random music will catch you and it will be Frank. I was listening to John Schofield (I think it was him) yesterday and heard some Frank influences.
(Listening to Eric Dolphy right now. I think Neil digs him)

Thanks CB! It was nice working with you about “Apostrophe (‘)”. Perhaps some things can be summarized with the following quote from Frank Zappa for a better understanding of his work: “Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is the best.”

“Music is best” I like that one. Id put a few more things on the “best” list. Food for one.

Food? For me too. But he was more over cigarettes and coffee. What I wanted to say is that Frank Zappa, in contrast to his partly infantile, partly nasty cynical songs and eccentricities, meant it seriously.

I like his censorship comments in Washington. He came across very well.

Those guys make Frank look good. He doesnt need help. Those are actually people who have influence. They need to be fired or work at a comedy club.

I told Fox I would give it a listen. I know Joe’s Garage and a few other ones here and there…but if you two give the approval to this one…I’m going to give it a try.

It was just some of that common ground I find with folks like Fox and yourself. Give the title cut a spin, knowing you I think Bruce’s bass will grab ya.

And how do you feel about ‘Dinah-Moe Humm’ from the previous record?

I think those early 1970s records are my favourite Zappa phase.

I think we might have discussed ‘Dinah’ before. One of those Zappa songs that probably leaves people cold. I think he probably got the reactions he was expecting. I do like the backup singers at the start of the song. They go for it and sound good. To me they would have sounded good singing any lyric.

I wonder if Ike was listening to the words or just collecting the session money, happy that Tina was making some cash.

What a guy! Brown shoes don’t make it. Any musician that has Flo and Eddy in his band is a pal of mine. Back in 69, our drummer discovered Zappa and attempted to get our band to play some of his tunes. “WTF are you on acid?” we asked. Well, actually he was, so that was my introduction to Frank Zappa and his brilliant lunacy.

I’m gonna set aside some time to delve into some Zappa. I can appreciate the talent, but I’ve never connected with his stuff… I dunno if that’s because I never found enough songs among the stuff I heard? Or maybe I just wasn’t ready?

Zappa is just so different, and album to album, let alone approach and sound and songwriting structures and… I applaud anyone who can actually write words about what he did!

True. Being an ax man you would appreciate some of his instrumentals like ‘Black Napkins’ etc. His workout on the title cut of this album just does it for me.’

I do like Franks word play and vocals but his guitar sound is unique. I always felt that he worked at it and really enjoyed playing.

TB probably finish it at home next game. But the underdog can’t be counted out. It’ll be an uphill battle but what have they got to lose but everything now?

It’ll take more than Price. The defense has got to shore up and keep TB to the outside like they did to Vegas and Toronto. Price isn’t seeing the puck like he could in earlier series.

Oh…Zappa. I have an ex-hubby that was into him. I was subjected to Zappaland for four years. I came away with only one song I could stand to listen to…Stink Foot. Most of the material had me wanting to stick ice picks in my ears. Captain Beefheart was just as bizarre.

Im laughing. ‘Stink Foot’, at least you picked a high brow listen. When we get the feeling of doing things with “ice picks” it is a good sign that maybe this music isnt for us. I have the same initials as Beefheart. Just threw that in there.

Zappa, the man, I was impressed with. I saw the videos of his testimonies. I liked the way he thought but, on the flip side, he made me hate Xylophones.

        That, you do, CB. 😉
