CB’s Favorite Performances : Claude Rains – Captain Louis Renault

When Humphry Bogart made films he was confident in his chops that he was always surrounded by other great actors. Just makes for a better film. Claude Rains as Captain Renault (Louis) is a perfect example. He comes close to stealing the show for me. Not quite but close. He makes Bogie and the film better.

Again, perfect casting in my books. This character has so much fun embracing his underhanded, corrupt, self-serving behavior. He revels in his position and never wavers (Maybe a little at the end). Claude through Louis keeps the film from becoming too heavy. He adds just the right light touch. He is so good (bad) that I enjoyed every scene he was in.

Rains totally commits to the characters deviousness. Man is he a guy that knows how to play all the angles. He holds the best cards. Louis has so many great lines that I wait for the next one to fall out of his mouth. If ever a character was bullet proof it’s Louis. Louis and Rick were made for each other and Renault will admit it. He alludes to it a couple of times.

So much good stuff going on in the film and Captain Renault is near the top of those things. You want something, Renault can get it for you but it’ll costya. What a fantastic performance by a really good actor. Claude Rains take a bow you sneaky little bastard.

“Ricky, I’m going to miss you. Apparently you’re the only one in Casablanca with less scruples than I”

No way Louis , you get the blue ribbon for that one.

“Make it ten. I’m only a poor corrupt official”

So, recall a while back when the Doc asked the CB for some favorite movies? Well, the wife was out the other night with the gals. So I spun the wheel and what came up but ‘A Man For All Seasons.’ Man, was that timely. It just so happens I’m reading this magazine I picked up which is all about Henry VIII. I went into this knowing the whole story of how Catherine’s sons were stillborn or lived a short time, Thomas More, etc. Really made a big difference in my appreciation.

And that cast! Scofield, Shaw, a few Redgraves, Orson Welles, John Hurt. Great flick. Thanks.

Such a great film Doc. I know you like the political angles and the film sure has a few of those. The story was no interesting with so many moving parts. Scofield was perfect and the rest of the cast were dead on. I like history especially well told. Now you are making we want to watch it again.
Its funny how things trigger us. It’s the same with music, ill hear something or a mention of certain music and bang Im gone. Glad you enjoyed it. The Brits are all over that stuff. Watched ‘Cromwell’ a while back. Worth the time.

Richard Harris Alec Guinness and a bunch of those great British actors. Lots of politics and religion just to make things real messy. They throw in a couple battles to get us out of Parliament. Hard to match Man For All Seasons but it does a good job.

Playoff Carey Price is in beast mode. If he avoids injury, it’s on. Expect a ton of low-scoring games and a few overtimes. I mean, Price and Vasilevsky? Haha gonna be unreal.

I honestly anticipate a league review of officiating over the summer. That two-handed full arm hack at Kucherov’s feet right in front of the ref… no call… unreal. Feels like you’d need to stab someone in order to get a penalty.
