When I feel like some hard rock music this is a record (And band) that I reach for. Without a doubt one of music’s hidden secrets. They came from another band that was also a hidden secret, Family. Don’t ask me why that is or was. All I know they are no secrets with CB. I love them.
With one of rocks most unique vocalists in Roger Chapman and a top notch guitar player in Charlie Whitney (plays some great slide) they form a band with Bob Tench (Jeff Beck, Humble Pie, Van Morrison, Ginger Baker and more), Nicko (Iron Maiden, Pat Travers) and John Plotel. What you get with these guys is some great tunes played with a hard no bullshit edge.
Run For Cover opens the record and gives you a good idea what you’re in for. The second cut ‘Me An’ Me Horse An’ Me Rum’ is just one of CB’s favorite greasy tunes. They tell a story and it’s all in the title. Some guy way back, getting drunk and singing about it. Only Chapman could pull it off. Think western Peckinpah style. Man do they set the mood in this one. Love it.
So much good music on this album. The music might remind you of other stuff but I will guaurntee you they will be a different listen. They pull out so many cool musical ideas that keep the ear engaged. I did a take on their cover of Daddy Rolling Stone from this album. An all time CB favorite song. The whole band cooks with Nicko laying down some cool skins, Roger wailing then Charlie going to town with a fantastic solo. Rock n roll man.
Chapman’s vocals might be harsh for some folks but not me. They are perfect for this music. I’ve been wanting to feature this record for a while (and a Family one). I have been a fan of these guys since their Family days. They play some very cool interesting music. They have been on my spin list for many moons. I still pull this out and enjoy it just like I used to. Give it some time it might grab you if not there is lots of others music out there, but none like this.
I really can’t handle Chapman’s vocals in Family.

You are probably are alone. I have the same reaction to certain vocalists. Not Roger.

Funny how the ear works. I can hear Chapman in Gabriel’s early vocals.

Phil Judd from early Split Enz has that kind of bray as well, but it’s not as pronounced.

Even if Chapman and Whitney are still here, the music goes in a slightly different direction than Family. Straight songs with more rhythm & blues. I like the debut better than later Streetwalkers albums.

I had the debut and it disappeared. Totally different direction than Family. You can hear it in songs like ‘Burlesque’,

To be honest: I never was a big fan of the Streetwalkers. Their elaborate rhythm & blues was quite interesting, but punk was much more important to me then.
I still listening to Family. “Music In A Doll’s House” and “It’s Only A Movie” are great albums. It’s a shame that the group is almost forgotten.

Ive been listening to Family since the take. ‘A Song For Me’ is sounding really good. I agree on “almost forgotten”. Thy were never well known.

I like the unique voice of Roger Chapman with Family. And even if the group is almost forgotten, they had a strong influence on bands like King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Genesis with Peter Gabriel and many others.

So many Fox. Grech with Parsons was an odd combo.

Thanks, CB. I gonna move into “Dolls House” again tonight. This is the primordial soup from which came out a lot in the 1970s.

I remember your earlier take. I’m listening to “Me and Me Horse and Me Rum.” Totally unique vibe. Another album I’ll spin in the Doc’s hot rod Lincoln.

All this stuff is connected Neil. Rick Grech went from Family to Blind Faith/Traffic and thats how i found Gram Parsons. Figure that out Lots of connections. I thought you might have been familiar with the early Family records. Here’s one from 1970

That’s some kickass heavy blues rock – sounds great to me.
Weirdly, I primarily knew Roger Chapman for his work with Mike Oldfield on the 1983 Oldfield album “Crisis,” where Chapman sang lead on “Shadow on the Wall.” That tune became a hit in Germany (no. 3) and Austria (no. 1).

Great info Christian. Chapman is big in your homeland.
I havent heard ‘Shadow’ for a while. Im listening to it right now. What a cool tune. Roger in fine form. Good stuff. I always found the Oldfield/Chapman combo a surprise but musicians I like always seem to hook up at some time.

Thanks, CB, I agree Chapman-Oldfield don’t look like a natural pairing. But I guess it worked reasonably well for this tune.
I associate Oldfield much more with vocalist Maggie Reilly and pop tunes like “Moonlight Shadow”, “Five Miles Out” and “To France”.
Like Chapman, Oldfield was pretty popular in Germany. I did listen to his music quite a bit back then. Then he fell off my radar screen.

Much the same with Oldfield, first couple albums. Chapman I stayed with. I have a few of his albums that were recorded in Germany.

This is new to me, CB… and I dig. Definitely a unique vibe here and the vocals weren’t at all what I expected.

Im stuck in a Family/Streetwalkers binge right now. Roger ‘Chapo” Chapman has a huge cult following especially over on your side of the planet.

Was just looking him up. Really unique sounding voice. I’ve never heard Family. Looks like he was really quite prolific – loads of solo albums between 79 and 2012!

I was going to post Family’s In My Own Time at one time. I like his voice…a good voice has feeling and soul behind it and his does. Those two songs rock, no doubt about it.

Good tune. Chapman was the lead singer most the time but there were other voices in there. Check out ‘How-Hi-the -Li’. Rick Grech on vocals. Real cool tune.
Streetwalkrs was a hard band. Lots of good ideas. Not as allover the map as family but still very interesting. I love it. Listening to a live version of ‘Me And My horse’ right now.

Oh Grech was with Blind Faith right? Cool.
I will take a listen to them. I like these two songs…I have been listening to them today. I like the rawness.

Good on the Blind faith connection. Thats how I found Gram Parsons and Family. Through Grech.

Funny how we find different artists. I found a lot of mine through Beatles books and it went from there.
Seems like it’s someone else connected with Grech but I can’t think of it….but don’t get me wrong…hell that’s a great career with them.

Traffic was one band he was in for a while. The Gram parson thing blew me a way. I got all his other connections. John Wetton (King Crimson) was also in Family
