Music Single : World’s In A Tangle – Fleetwood Mac

I heard this way back and fell for it. When I think of Fleetwood Mac this is one of the first songs that come to mind. It took me and didn’t let go. I fell in love with this style of music. A young Mac joined forces with some Chicago blues men and made some magic. When you hear this kind of music you’re done, in a good way.

Love the lyrics on this. Danny Kirwan’s delivery is great. I wonder what these old black guys were thinking when this skinny white kid was singing this tune. Probably “not bad”. Plus his guitar licks are perfect. Otis Span’s piano rolls are killer. These guys cook. One of the coolest songs in my pile.

This is off one of my all time favorite records ‘FM In Chicago’. When you hear this at a young age it can’t help but leave a stamp on your music mind. I had no idea what Danny was singing about but I was singing with him. This early Mac stuff still sounds great today at least I think so.

(Jimmy Rogers wrote this back in the 50’s. We’re still trying to untangle things. I’ll start with CB’s act. See if I can untangle that))

    Early Fleetwood Mac needs more attention- all the focus goes on the pop version of the band after Buckingham and Nicks signed on! Excellent.

    I don’t have an awfy lot of Fleetwood Mac, CB… I’ve always felt a bit indifferent about them. I like Rumours, but not half as much as many other people do and Tango in the Night (the other that was recommended to me) doesn’t do an awfy lot for me. This, though… this has my attention.

      Like I said to Hans, this is the Mac I knew. I didnt hang on for the later version. This cut is so cool. A lot of those early British bands cut their teeth on this stuff It blows my mind the music this meeting produced. It probably blew the young British guys minds to. playing with authentic blues men. I’ve heard this cut a million times and it still jacks me. The original by Rogers is good too.

    When you only know the Mac from their classic ’70s ‘Rumours’ phase, which I also really dig, it’s hard to believe they started out as a smoking hot blues band. It’s like listening to two completely different bands!

    Of course, if you compare the line-up on ‘Fleetwood in Chicago’ with ‘Rumours’, the only overlap you have is Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan had been long gone by the time ‘Rumours’ came out. Instead, you had very different musicians with Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie.

    I guess it’s a longwinded way of saying they were two completely different bands that essentially only shared the same name. And this doesn’t take into account the phase in-between the blues and the classic period, which you can argue is yet another phase in the band’s incredible 50-year-plus history!

      Fantastic tune. Glad you dig it. The song still resonates today. Such a cool blues.
      Yeah a lot of changes in this band over the years. I like that ‘Kiln House’ ‘Bare Trees’ stuff also but this is the music that really does it for me. Where it started. McVie and Mick carried the name.

    Not to be confused with Tangled up in Blue. That is some sweet, sweet blues. I have the Mac in mind too for a different take a few clicks down the road.

      Look forward to it. This is the Fleetwood Mac that i was introduced to. It is also very much the style that my ear likes. Not one thing i dont like about this song. Span’s piano is just the right touch. Some nice licks on the guitar also.

        I did this version of Mac way back when I first started. So I might kick the can down the road a bit, nor necessarily to CB’s tastes.

    Yup, next to “Everyday I Have The Blues”, “Rockin ‘Boogie”, “Homework” there is also a splendid version of “World’s In A Tangle on “Blues Jam In Chicago”. The right people were in the right place at the right time.

        I’ve read that some of the Chicago bluesmen didn’t showed up to play with the English band, but it really doesn’t matter how they felt about each other at the time, this is irrelevent. What matters is the album and that is excellent.

    Thats a great song, I like the pace.
    Where did you find this album? The Blues is probably the only musical genre that lends itself to compilation albums. I’ve got a few Atalntic compilation albums that have introduced me to artists that I’d not heard of before.
    Always been a FM fan, old stuff and new stuff even tho they’re two different genres and eras. I’ve got 12 FM albums and I play them all.

      My brother had a copy of the record when i was a kid. I picked up the album later. Great song great album, ‘Live In Chicago’

        I used to hang out at Heritage Music in Calgary. They had this big barn of a building in the beltline area, the outside was covered vinyl records. Inside they had these giant concert sized speakers. All they played was Blues and Jazz and most of what they sold back in the day was rock and roll and country. Was a very cool place to hang out and look at concert photos and memorabilia.
        The crazy and very cool lady that owned Heritage gave me a lecture when I bought FM’s TUSK ablum. That would have been in 1979 when I was as bulletproof. As she took my money she told me TUSK was shit and that FM hadn’t done anything worth listening to since 1973. I still smile when I recall the look of disgust she gave me and how she picked up the album as though it were a turd. She told me to take the album I’d just bought, and nail it on the outside of the building. Still have that vinyl.

    Calgary? Its a place on the prairies where 5th line hockey wannabees go to find out what a thick skull sounds like from the inside when beat upon by a succession of toothless large knuckled gentlemen.
    Or as the local fishermen would say, its at the confluence of the Bow and the Elbow rivers.
