Movie : King Of Devils Island

A teenage boy is sent to a youth prison on an island in Norway. It’s early 1900’s and it’s winter. It’s not long before he starts to rebel against the abusive system that’s in place. At first his behavior is smothered but as time goes on his relentlessness against the abuse inspires the rest of the boys to rise up against the authorities. Based on a true story.

Another one of those under the radar films that I’m drawn to. Director Murius Holst takes us into this bleak world of incarcerations. He creates the environment that brings a harsh reality to the story. Stellan Skarsgard brings his usual strong work as the man who runs the facility. The cast is strong with some standout performances.

The film is in the same vein as Papillion, Cool Hand Luke, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest with a more somber vibe. But the story is one that grabbed me and took me along for the struggle to escape. You feel the location right in your bones. A terrific film in my books.

So have a watch and see if you can get off the island. I would have done anything to do that.
