Three intimidating characters waiting for a train at a whistle stop. They don’t look like a very friendly reception committee. The train arrives and stops. A lone man gets off. A gun fight ensues and the three unlikely lads are shot dead. They waited for the wrong guy. We follow the lone man on his search for Frank. Building of a railroad line, hired guns, a new start for a whore and you have once upon a time in the west.
My initial reaction to this film was lukewarm when I first saw it. With a few follow- up viewings I changed that to a great watch of a real good film. It was in the queue for a re-watch. With the passing of Ennio Morricone it was fast tracked.
Sergio goes out with a bang on his westerns. Adding it to his $$$ trilogy as one of my favorite westerns. Cinematography, story and cast do the trick. Sergio calls on all his John Ford influence and uses it to enhance his vision. Jason Robards ( I have become a big fan of his work over the years), Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinal and great supporting cast bring the film to life. Oh yeah, Ennio’s soundtrack doesn’t hurt.
A short take for an epic cinematic treat. My Gal liked it just as much as me or more if that’s possible. We strapped in with the popcorn, licorice, couple beverages (Little fresh fruit. Grapes and cherries) and entered the world of Sergio Leone. Okay I’ll say it. They don’t make them like this anymore.
( All the leads have their own theme music. Robard’s music puts a smile on my face. CB wants some theme music)
I’m surprised it took CB so long to get to this one. I certainly know of this flick but for some reason have never seen it. I’ll add it to the never-ending queue. As far as CB theme music goes, here’s one they could play every time CB enters the room in a flick.

Hey, CB. I don’t know much about Robards. But I didn’t at all like his performance in A Thousand Clowns. Anyway, I’ve never seen Once Upon. It’s been on my list for a long time. One of these days I will watch it. See ya!

Time to pull the trigger Neil. Cable Hogue with Robards is a good one.

The opening scene is one of my favourite movie scenes ever. The rest of it was a bit over long tbh, but what a beginning!!
Up there with the opening for The Wild Bunch.

The opening is fantastic. It took me a while to warm up to it like I said.
The Wild Bunch is another favorite for sure “If They Move …. Kill ‘Em!”

Great shout, and excellent tunes. Man, you’ve got taste. 1537 mentioned The Wild Bunch, also great. I always go back to Eastwood, of course. And to Magnificent Seven, but that’s ‘cos I’m a Kurosawa fanatic, tried and true.

One of my faves, CB, in my Top 10 list. There are dozens of other non-Leone Spag Westerns, but to me it’s a case of Sergio Leone, then everyone else.

Yeah, this is a good one. I remember this being my first Henry Fonda, and that big chin showing up from under his hat. Sergio knew how to capture faces. Did you know this the beginning of the “Once Upon…” trilogy? Duck, You Sucker/Fist Full of Dynomite was originally called “Once Upon a Time…. a Revolution”. The film in the series is Once Upon A Time In America. Fun Fact.

Yeah, the next movie I saw him in was The Wrong Man and it was jarring for me to see him playing a nice guy… which is is know for.

It was the other way around for me. I always associated him with the good guy. This was against type and it worked.

On my to watch list probably sooner rather than later as we’re in another lockdown here in the UK. My Dad would have liked this film he wasn’t a big fan of the slow burn western. .

I love this one CB… After watching spaghetti westerns like this…I was hooked. This one is one of my top westerns. The dirty feel of it is great…from the acting, music, and the cinematography.

We watched it again after reading this. Claudia Cardinale…I could NOT keep my eyes off of her…
I loved how they kept the reason quiet til the last. Also, he wasn’t in a lot of the movie but Jack Elam…his face…that man was one of those great character actors Hollywood had at the time.
I loved the closeups and you can see the grit on their faces.

The closeups are a Leone trademark. Yeah, Claudia was more than filler in this one. Elam and Strode were perfect at the beginning. I love Jack.

You are right of course…the closeups really make it…and it’s the way he does the closeups. He shows every wrinkle and unshaven hair they have.
