Movie – Zandy’s Bride

download - 2020-11-07T112808.347

A rugged west-coast rancher receives his mail order bride with anything but respect and courtesy. In fact he’s down right ignorant and mean spirited. He wants her to give him sons and to run the household chores. No frills, no kind of civil contact. Purely a cold unfeeling arrangement. The new bride has ideas of her own and is not going to be bullied and treated anything less than civil. We watch as these two different people try to come to some sort of mutual existence. Will they make it work?

Director Jan Troell makes a subtle, realistic film. He tells the story with a sure hand. He obviously did his research. He takes us to this beautiful location and has us witness two very different people, who’s expectations are not even close to being fulfilled. The story is played out in a beautiful west – coast location. The photography is gorgeous. Good soundtrack.

The film is a slow build as the two main characters dance around each other. The supporting cast is perfect. When you have Susan  Tyrell and Harry Dean Stanton you’re in good shape. The two leads are perfectly cast. The coldest meeting in film history. Liv Ullman as Hanna brings a quiet refined woman who has taken a big leap to join this man she has never met. We feel her isolation, hurt and anger as it plays out. She is outstanding. No false moves. Real and in the moment at all times. Great work Liv.

Gene Hackman just adds another great performance to his list. He is the perfect counter to Ullman’s character. Gruff, rude, brutal, abusive, uncouth, with no social graces. He is just one big asshole. Gene never cuts corners. He never shy’s away from showing the dark side. He is like a bad kid who has never learned one thing about being a caring human being. That’s why he is so good. He is Zandy Allen.

A really good off the radar film. Good story told with minimal dialogue. Nothing forced or out of place. I love films like this. Not trying to do anything but tell a story. Raw and real. Give it a chance, it might take you along

“Your beans are good Hannah” There’s a line to get a relationship started.

Good little movie – I haven’t seen it since the 80s when I was deeply in love with my first VCR. Whenever you give Hackman a chance to shine, he will.

Jan Troell directs a good film. If interested check out his others. They’re good. Same “immigration” vibe. I think you’d like this one Neil. great cinematography

Sounds like a good plot and definitely has the star power to make it work.

Wow, attempted rape right in the trailer! Different times! I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one, CB!

Yeah, the film doesnt pull any punches. Those times were rough on women. The director did his homework and made a great film. You really feel Ullman’s characters isolation and “What the fuck did I get myself into?”. Lots of good payoffs in the story.

I actually make a mean pot of baked beans. Not to many things the offspring like about CB but his beans are one of them.

I think you and Bailey will get something out of this. Good simple story with great camera work.
