CB’s Theme Song

Okay. We all need a theme song or theme music.

Lets just say that CB got up one day and things just weren’t going his way. He was having girlfriend problems, he was broke, hung over, his music machine wasn’t working, no cigars, not even a cigar butt to be had.  I lost my John La Conkeroo. Generally feeling like a bag of hammers. People were telling him to “straighten up and fly right”, giving him shit everywhere he turned. Neighbors wife was yelling at him (her husband wasn’t round). Time to get movin when that happens.

He went for a walk trying to shake the funk he was in. People were leaning out of car windows calling him nasty names, giving him the raspberry. Pack of dogs put the run on him, tore the ass out of his pants. A seagull that could barely fly did it’s business on CB’s shoulder. A real shit day.

Somehow he found himself in front of his favorite bar (All bars are his favorites). Like I said he was broke and was hoping that maybe Lloyd the bartender would give him a break, a little credit. He stepped inside. The bar was deader than a door nail. Lloyd was at the bar doing a crossword. He took one look at me and said “CB, looks like you could use a cold one and a theme song”. “I said Lloyd, I could use somethin”

He cracked me a brew and wandered over to the jukebox and punched the keys. My new theme song blew out of that old box. It was like the band were inside that thing waiting for me. CB was happy and focused again. On the path, ready for whatever life threw at him. Thanks Lloyd.

“We’re gonna rock, we’re gonna roll”

(Everyone should have a theme song. What’s yours?)

Music has a way of saving the day. You can have more than one. No rules. As long as it gets you back on track.

I don’t have a theme song, but I’ll say this: “A seagull that could barely fly did its business on CB’s shoulder” is one of the greatest lines I’ve read this year. Man, you’ve got a way with words!

Sounds like CB got his mojo workin’ again. Love the Green version of Mac. Haven’t heard this for a while. I’ll add it to the queue.

It’s that rough sax that gets me going. Put that whole album on the spin cycle. It’s great. Meeting of two worlds. I just heard a Jeremy Spencer recording from early 2000. Sounds good.

Superb choice CB. Jimmy Cliff ‘The Harder They Come’ now/always/forever my tune – deceptively pretty music, militant lyrics.

deKE comes through with a beauty. I’m laughing against the grain. I can hear this one coming out of the old box. CB would be up jumping around like a released primate.

I never heard of that album CB…it sounds raw and honest…you can’t ask for more.

Yup. So which way are you leaning with you “theme music”? You have pretty varied tastes. Something that lifts you up when all this madness closes in.

Well, I’ve always said I want ‘The Monster Mash’ played at my funeral but that’s not really the same as ‘theme music’.
There’s a classical piece I always put on when it gets too heavy and that’s the Adagio from Rodrigo’s Concierto de Arunjuez.

But… if we’re talking something a little more ‘give you something to pump your walk up’ it’s an instant answer from me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFkYoT5Gezo

Yup. That Kinks is perfect. That’s you T. Slosh back a few listening to that.
I have a great jazz version of that ‘Arunjuez’ by Jim Hall. My neighbor turned me onto it.

Man, I had a non-legit copy of this at one time. Pete Green’s slide was something else! To answer your question, Dolly Parton’s 9-5 on weekdays and Macklemore’s Thrift Shop on weekends.

Fleetwood Mac were just British blues purists when they arrived at the Chess studios, more or less as tourists, and played with distinguished Chicago blues musicians. Interesting document nevertheless.

This “album” came out of pure jams or from actual composed songs designed to facilitate jamming. It’s also clear, that the Chess artists were not to happy to “collaborate” on this. The uneasy feeling between Fleetwood Mac and the Chess artists is palpable. This is not always the case. ( “The London Howlin Wolf Sessions”).

I love Fleetwood Mac of the Peter Green era. The music was vital and immediate. You right, the performaces with the Chicago guys rise to that level that make this album worth.

CB, you turned me on to this one a while ago, and it’s a great set of tunes and a hidden gem. I think the American blues guys started to crack the mainstream because of the British bands who idolized them – that meant gigs, money and new fans and markets, so I don’t think there was really much resentment for the sake of “blues purity”.
