Album : Bongo Fury – Zappa/Beefheart/Mothers
Hanspostcard asked me and a few other good people to be part of a project where we take a few of our favorite albums to a desert island. It’s been a lot of fun and I’ve picked up some new music and some reminders of others I haven’t listened to for a while. It is really cool to hear the personal stories related to the various picks. So below is one of the albums I decided to take with me (along with lots of cigars, potato chips, grape soda, chocolate bars, fishing rod, some matches, sunglasses, lotion, hammock, lots of water and some flares in case I get sick of myself).
Have to take some Zappa and this one with Captain Beefheart fills the bill. Has the mix that I need. Frank doing his live thing with a great band and throw in the Captain doing his thing. Right up my alley. Mad jazz, hard rock, a taste of country and like Frank says “A little madness”
I’m a huge fan of Frank’s guitar playing and he cuts loose on this one often. With Zappa and Beefheart together I get a two for one deal. I get “Bongo Fury”. The music is all over the map and it is more than a taste of Zappa live ( 3 studio cuts). One of those cuts is ‘200 Years Old’ a slow blues with Beefheart sounding like his inspiration, Howlin Wolf/Muddy Waters. Frank laying down some of those chops I like. It’s not smooth but it’s greasy and rough the way they intended and it sounds great.
‘Advance Romance’ gets some vocal help from Napoleon Murphy Brock and George Duke (great Zappa sidemen) and the band jams and does their live thing. Again Frank does some tasty solos. The album ends with the top 40 hit ‘Muffin Man’ (just kidding. It should have been). Frank takes us out, laying down some last licks, he introduces the band and the Captain adds some of his silky smooth vocals. Man do I miss these guys and girls.
So there it is folks. The Zappa/Beefheart/Mothers experience. It’s unique. They didn’t make a lot of music together. Maybe that’s a good thing for some people. Not me.
Really had to think about this. I’ve been on an extended Zappa listen lately. There are so many great releases and re-releases (7 hrs of Hot Rats) that I could lock into but I’ll go with one of my original listens for nostalgic reasons and other things. I miss ya Frank, Don, Mothers. But I still have the music. “I wish I had a pair of bongos”
Oh ya. I’m packing the bongos right now.
Check out Fox’s take below. He’s a bongo player too. Along with the two CB’s and Brando.
Thanks CB! “Bongo Fury” is a true best-of, although not a best-of compilation. What I mean is, that this is not a collection of the “best” songs, but rather the essence of Zappa and Beefheart. Extreme, harmonious, full of rocking, and in a fantastic playful mood.

“Essence”. Exactly.

Didn’t know they’d recorded together, though I knew they were pals. Two very singular musicians and individuals, for sure.

The Captain was on ‘Hot Rats’. If you believe the bs out there, they had a falling out. Too bad.

Ah, maybe one of these days I’ll incorporate free jazz into a story. I did that once or twice before.

Really interesting – I don’t know this one at all. Is it pre-toilet humour era Zappa? I get very bored with him, very quickly later on.

“75”. He was always alternating between his directions. I really like the music on this plus Beefhearts contributions. If you like FZ at all I would guess there’s enough on here for your listening pleasure. Some real good licks from Frank.

On a different day I would of took ‘Wheels of Fire’ few of those combos out there. I’ll save my comment (What a great record) for your choice. I have a take on that one way back.

I really like it…I thought about At Fillmore East…can’t go wrong with that one but I wanted the studio cuts also.

We already talked about Franks version of one of their songs.

I like that one. It’s cool that he learned it…some fan kept bugging him about it and he did it…of course well

I like me some Zappa. I only know the title of this one. I’ll add it to the pile.

Doc, listen to 200 Years Old. Frank plays the blues. I love this cut. It reminds me of his Apostrophe (More hard rock) with Gordon and Bruce. Same vibe, Just want to hear more. CB can be a little hard to handle but I like him, a lot.

I’m stuck in a Zappa cycle. Hot Rats right now. Beefheart on vocals. ‘Willie The Pimp’

You will be disappointed but much of this album didn’t float my boat. For one thing I’ve never been much of a Beefheart fan. Tried, didn’t work. The problem with Frank is he always teeters on that adolescent edge and here he falls into it. “Muffin Man” is the only song I recall from this album. But Frank’s blues playing is nice.
The silver lining is now I still wanna go back and listen to some of his stuff I might have missed.

Not disappointed in the lest. Different strokes.
Good that you are going to keep going to the vaults. Lots of great music. FF the nasty bits.

Beefheart is too avant-garde for me. But I’m always down for some Zappa.

The early Captain is more blues/rock before he went to wherever he went.

I’ve only heard a small part of the album with the fish guy on the the cover.

You might dig this. Way back. ‘Trout Mask’ is a little out there.

His early stuff is a lot more accessible. He’s a disciple of Howlin Wolf in my opinion.
