Movie : Come And See

A young Belorussian peasant is swept up in the throws of the Nazi invasion in 1943. Young, naive and ignorant he joins the partisans to defend his country. Excited and eager to be part of the adventure he is soon hit with the stark reality of war. Brutal, violent, inhuman and utterly devastating. If he survives will he ever be the same?

CB has been sitting on this film for a long time. Finally got to watch it (What took you so long?). I was more than impressed. The film took me a while to really get into it. I could have easily drifted away but I stayed with it. I really started to be taken on the young Florya’s journey. It’s a slow build and believe me it takes you somewhere.

There is no slick, candy coating of anything in this movie. This film is as connected to the truth as you can get. It is probably one of the best war films I have seen. I’m not talking comparisons with films like Apocalypse Now, Deer Hunter etc. It is way more bare bones (No where near the budgets) and a whole different environment. The one commonality is the horror of war. This is a film of the people who paid heavy consequences for things totally beyond their control. Casualties of madmen.

Direction, production, locations, performances, casting come together to make a very good motion picture. Elem Klimov captures image after image and makes choices that never feel false. The ending also works on your mind. Bracket some time and be taken on a film experience. It just feels so authentic. No stars, no distractions. No acting. Just naturalism.’

CB passes on films (And Music) that move him. ‘Come And See’ did that. The story is powerful. It is not an easy watch. Remember, it’s a war movie and war brutal.

As I found Jo Jo Rabbit confronting enough, I’m not sure I’m made of the stuff needed for this one, CB. Though I enjoyed reading the post.

Not that familiar with Jo Jo but what I gather it would probably be on the other end of the see saw from this one. any doubts at all stay away Bruce. it’s harsh.

Promise me you’ll post on Jo Jo when you eventually catch up with it. Would be fascinated to read a CB take, as it’s very ‘filmic’, combining satire, surrealism, absurdity and heartbreak. Sam Rockwell is fabulous.

I promise and I will put it on the slate. CB needs to lighten up a bit anyway.

I’m putting it on my list of possibilities, though maybe it’s too brutal for me. Or maybe not. In any case, thanks for bringing it to peoples’ attention.

You know I never push my likes. This is such a good film but it goes for the jugular. Maybe check out some other opinions on it. So much to like in the film. The story doesnt work without the reality of the situation.

In the eighties I saw a few films by soviet directors: Tarkovsky, Askoldov, Parajanov, Klimov. “Come and See” is really not a popcorn movie, it’s a raw, brutal work that takes you to hell for two hours and keeps you there for even longer.

Hey deKE, yeah this pulls no punches. Raw, brutal and a different kind of ride. Kinda outside the mainstream box. Way outside. Good to hear from ya.

I don’t know the picture. Based on your description and the trailer, it looks quite intense. I imagine you should probably be in a good emotional state before watching this.

CB wins the ‘obscure movie ‘o the week’ award. Sounds deep. Maybe you could do a couple of lighthearted romcoms with Hugh Grant or Jennifer Aniston.

Hugh Grant and Jennifer Aniston are probably very nice folks but they wouldnt want a person like CB watching their work
It’s past your bedtime. Hit the hay fella.

I like it when movies are loaded with unknowns. It helps with the immersion. Where were you able to watch this one?

OK, they’re usually good about playing a movie more than once. I’ll keep and eye out for it.

I keep an eye on them pretty good. Havent been getting much lately. When this came up I grabbed it quick. Lots of the films I like and want to see are hard to track down but patience usually works. They turn up eventually.
I had no idea about Tubi until you mentioned it.

Tubi has a lot of crap on it but you can find some good stuff too. TCM ran all Goldie Hawn movies yesterday. I “limited” myself to only recording 3.

Tons of “crap” but sometimes I like a good “crap”. We’ve been doing the horror thing and Tubi has a bunch of those old Hammers that I like. Thanks for the tip. Plus I do like a good cheesy movie if I’m in the mood.
Mars, have you seen ‘The Last Man On Earth” with Vincent Price (I love the guy)? It kind of fits in with what’s going on right now. The story has been made into a few films but the Price one is my favorite. It’s good in a Twilight Zone way. It’s on Tubi.

The clip has me sold. Though I don’t think this’ll be one I watch with the fam. Saw one you might find interesting the other day – a Slovak-Chech film called The Teacher
