I’ve been listening to Ray Benson and The Wheel for many moons. Many versions of this song are out there but this band does the one that gets me the most. You want to swing and boogie woogie? Ray and the band know a thing or two about a thing or two. Great vocals, chemistry, musicianship and just a sense of having a good time playing music. Give me that fiddle every time. Nothin pushed or over the top just some very cool music by a cool bunch of musicians that make it look easy and sound so damn good. CB always likes more than one vocalist in a band, I get three here. Elizabeth McQueen tops it off. Man does she send me.
I picked this live version just because that’s what Asleep at The Wheel does best, play live. If Ray (A national treasure) and the gang ever swing by your place, catch them quick. It doesn’t matter if you’re a metal-head, a jazz fiend, blues monster etc. you will be a convert because people are just so friendly and they love to swing and shake a leg at their shows, Get ready to sweat and have too much fun. Some great music by some great people that know their stuff. They should they’ve been doing it for a long time.
Bob Wills and Nat King Cole meet here.
“Once you Get hip to this kind of tip ‘………. ah baby you can get your kicks on Route 66”
More proof that blues and country are twins with a different hair cut.

I’m chuckling at that.

They are a great live band. I saw them at the Broken Spoke in Austin many years ago.

I figured you’d pipe in Phil. How is it down in the Lone Star State?

Hi there CB. It’s hot…damn hot down here in Texas. The Corona is spreading like an army of fire ants to all corners of the state. All this Texas music praise has renewed my interest, so I am going to revisit some of my old disc. Asleep At The Wheel has gone through numerous line up changes over the years. The time I saw them in Austin, which is their home base, they had a gal on fiddle that could light the place up. I believe later on they also had a gal on pedal steel. In Texas, Ray Benson is right up their with Willy and Waylon. I look for all three to be declared saints in the near future.

Yeah I hear about whats going on in parts down there. I know a kid who’s headed for Galveston to go to school. Hot spot for a couple reasons.
Amazing the musicians that have been through Wheel. Benson seems like a pretty good guy. Good for him.

This is an awesome take and makes me feel like hopping in my sexy family vehicle, pretending I’m in some cool Mustang convertible, and heading down on Route 18 (the closest route to my house)! 🙂
I’ve always loved that tune, one of the ultimate driving songs. There are so many great versions. I think the first one I heard was by The Rolling Stones. Do you know Them’s take? Holy cow!
I love road trips. Traveling the actual Route 66, or I should say what’s left of it, is an item on my bucket list. Unfortunately, my family doesn’t care about the mother road and taking that California trip!

Yeah I know those version. You cant go wrong. Have you heard the Nat King Cole version? It drips cool.
Soon as you put the song on you’re on “Route 66” no matter where your at. Load up the station wagon and crank it!

Have to check Cole’s take.
“Route 66” definitely is among the ultimate driving songs. Others I like in that department that come to mind are “Highway Star” (Deep Purple), “Born to be Wild” (Steppenwolf) and “Radar Love” (Golden Earring).
In fact, I did vaguely recall a playlist with road songs I previously put together. It was three years ago and I just found it. Undoubtedly, you could easily find more tracks to add, but I guess it’s a start!
Honey, where did you put the bloody car keys? 🙂

BTW, correction, I just pulled up Cole’s version and can confirm I had heard it before. Though it’s very different from Asleep at the Wheel, the Stones and Them, it grooves like hell!

I think it might be the original

Now I had to look it up! 🙂
According Wikipedia, the tune was written by Bobby Troup, and Nat King Cole was the first artist to record it in 1946, together with the King Cole Trio.
That’s 74 years ago. Mick Jagger was a 3-year-old toddler, while Van Morrison was about 1 year old!

You are getting a shot of music history. Amazing when you put the ages in there. Van and Mick are fans just like us. Nat was one of the coolest guys in the world.

Hi, CB. I’ve got to like Benson — he grew up in Philadelphia!

That is funny. I didnt know that. See how smart you’re making me.I think Jerry Jeff is from that area of the country also. The old “You can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy”

Good cover. I’ve known of these guys for a while. But I figured they were just straight good-old-boy country and never gave them a pass. That’s a toe-tapper. It would be nice to see some life out of that audience, maybe a head bob. But they sit there like they’re a fucking Mozart recital.

I was telling someone else I was into Hicks and the Licks. Wheel were on the scene at the same time but leaned more to the country swing. But always had the boogie going on.. They have some really good records. They are probably right up there with all those bands that more than paid their dues playing bars. They learned their trade the old way. Playing live.
