    A truly classic film theme. This has got to be one of Clint Eastwood’s coolest roles!

    One of Morricone’s other scores I recall is for “The Professional,” a French action movie starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, one of the really popular French actors in Germany during the ’70s and ’80s. The score became quite popular, especially the main theme, which I recall was even played on German mainstream radio at the time!

      Very good on ‘The Professional’ Christian.. Time for a rewatch. I have Ennios music all over my record stack.

        Here’s another good one, I think – not really a movie expert: The Sicilian Clan starring Jean Gabon, Alain Delon and Lino Ventura. I remember watching many movies with these actors. They were all great!

        I found a CD I’ve been looking for for ages. John Zorns ‘The Big Gun Down’. Zorns working of Ennio’s work. I know you are warming up to the instrumentals. This is an interesting recording.

    One of the commenters on the RS site mentioned “The Professional” too in that shocked “How could they leave it out?” tone. Don’t know it.

    I didn’t know he did The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in the West.
    He could have just done the Leone trilogy and have been a legend.

        As much as I love music…at times I took scores for granted…a few years ago I started to realize…wow…that piece of music accented what was happening more than the action did.

        Yeah music cant swing both ways with a film. When it enhances like Ennio’s did it’s magic. Part of the film. A big part.

        You are right it becomes part of it. One example…a very commercial example would be Star Wars…It’s not Star Wars without that music and the same with the Trilogy.

        Right. Ennio has a pretty huge body of work. I’m still discovering it. Vinyl Daft Dad did a take on the soundtrack album. The day I read his take I watched a Brando film (Burn) that same day. Ennio scored it.

        That is a pretty cool coincidence. I just found one I watched with Bailey that he did… Days of Heaven

        How was Burn by the way? I’ve read where his movies in the late sixties up until the Godfather were hit and miss…and then he did Last Tango …I haven’t seen that one yet either.

        Cool that you Bailey share your love of film. I’m lucky with my brood that way also.
        I’m a big Brando guy before The Godfather and after.
        I liked ‘Burn’. Uneven but worth the time. I’ve watched it a couple times. Off the radar. Marlon does some nice truthful work. How”a flawed gem” sound. Liked the story.
        I liked a lot of his 60’s work. I think I’ve done a few takes on them. ‘One Eyed Jacks’, ‘The Chase’, ‘Mutiny’. Yeah there’s a few that I’m sure others liked more than CB. I also liked ‘Tango’. He pretty well uncensored himself.

        Flawed Gem sounds good. I’m not the biggest critic of movies. It has to be pretty bad before I just say nope…won’t recommend it. I always try to find something I like…some I find more than others.

        I loved The Wild One and Streetcar…, Apocalypse Now, and of course The Godfather. The one on my list is On the Waterfront.

        Oh we are lining up Bad Lieutenant for tonight…if nothing comes up we are watching it.

        ‘Burn’ is worth a watch knowing you and Bailey’s (some good cinematography. Raw)) mindset.
        I also did ‘Waterfront. Great film. One of his best performances.
        BL is a trip (bad trip). Interested in the reaction. Good luck!

    I read that he would compose at his desk, not at a piano. He heard the music in his head and wrote it down on music-notation paper.

      That makes sense to me Neil. The creative process always fascinates. His music is embedded in my head. When I was catching all those early films I had no idea who he was and how much his work helped create the atmosphere of the films. You must know the John Zorn ‘Big Gundown’ album? Right up your alley I would think.

    Man… there’s nothing comparable to an Ennio Morricone score. Those Dolllar Trilogy themes are the top of their game but his stuff from Once Upon A Time In America (like Cockeye’s Song or Deborah’s Theme) and The Mission still move me like little else to this day

    A sparse, haunting soundtrack. The jangling electric guitar, the recorder flute, and the chorus of deep male voices urging the characters on. One hell of a score, not to mention a new type of western.

      So many other films he scored Queen. I’m sure you can navigate and find some other good Ennio music.

        I think there are so many average film composers out there who just make background noise Morricone made music that absolutely lifted the whole experience at best.

        Yup. He got it. I dont know his process but I guess he saw or really got the images and vibe and really felt it. Background noise he wasnt.

    Yeah, all of the scores he did for the Dollars films are fantastic. I’m most partial to The Untouchables theme though. Probably since I grew up on that one.
