Music Singles – The Odds – Heterosexual Man / 54-40 – She La

Here’s two singles by a couple of Canadian bands that I really dig. We do a lot of strange things here in Canada but we have some great bands that know how to craft a good tune. Hats off if you’ve heard 54 – 40 and The Odds outside of the frozen north. Sometimes we take a road trip, see a little of the world and play our music. Check out a couple good ones.

A message song that just kicks. 54-40 have been putting out great rock n roll for a long time. Another band from my neck of the woods that should be heard more.

Listen to the passion in this tune. Just another solid rock song with energy and attitude. You know from the opening riff things are going to explode and they do. I get into this one every time I hear it. One of those songs that moves CB. See if it gets a foothold with you. Give it a spin.

54-40 have so much good music. If you know them, you know. If not, spend some time giving them a listen. I think you’ll like what you hear.

“She says so long man it’s to late”. Get him girl.

We’ll let the Odds lighten the mood a little. CB couldn’t resist this tune even if he tried. Give it a go. They get right into a great rock riff and then The Odds put it into gear. It’s just a fun song like rock n roll should be sometimes. Not only that, the song kicks ass on the music side. One of those tunes that gets a  … CB on the dance floor doing his thing because he has a “short circuit in his frontal lobe”.

Great tune and a pretty good video below. I’ve been in bars like that.  CB loves a good message song and  The Odds cook up a good one here.  I really don’t know what the message is but …. I like the beat.

I know a few of those heterosexual fellas. Not bad guys. “Just a problem with their glands”

Never seen the Odds but 54-40 a few times. You have just reaffirmed what a good live band The Odds were from what Ive heard. A sense of humor goes a long way.

That’s my job Neil. CB is like peanut butter spreading all that goodness over the world. Like I said to Aphoristical, Hootie did 54-40’s ‘I Go Blind’, you might have caught that.

    Great post!

To start with, Canada is a wonderful country many other nations can learn from, starting with the U.S. of A., IMHO.

And you’re certainly right about music from Canada. Starting with one of my longtime heroes Neil Young, a lot of great music has been coming out of this country. Robbie Robertson, Randy Bachman, Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfood are a few other artists that come to mind. And as a retired hobby bassist, I also must mention Geddy Lee!

As for these particular tunes, I had not heard them before. But, yes, they sound great.

    Canada rocks!🎸

So much great music up here Christian. The ones you mention and so many more off the radar that dont reach as many ears. I think you’ve done a Hootie Blowfish take before. They covered 54-40’s I go Blind’
      We all rock man!

I like the depth on the guitar they have going on in 54-40 and Odds is catchy as hell. Good stuff CB.
Deke introduced me to a Canadian band called Sloan…I’ve been listening to them ever since…

That deKe knows his stuff. Plus he always gives lots of ink to his Canadian cousins. Like he said about 54-4-, such a “solid back catalog”. h
Here’s a link of the very first song i heard them do way back in 86. Great live band. Loud!

I like it…it’s raw and not 80s overproduced. If it has an edge and is catchy…I’m there.

Good stuff. But what is “Heterosexual Man” trying to say? It’s way too subtle for me.

Man, Odds and 54-40 were staples in the 90s for me, and still are now!

Glad you dig the 20 Mies. Different from JSBX, but like I said, Judah is the man!

Good straight ahead rock and roll – imagine that! So many Canadian bands are wired that way and I like it. I never heard 54-40 before, but I knew I had some Odds in my pile of stuff. Turns out it was just one measly tune, “Truth Untold” from 1995.

Since they don’t play a lot of this in the States, I was wondering if they hear it much in Europe?

No idea on the Europe thing. I know that they hear them a lot at CB’s place.
54-40 would have lots for your show Grand. A fave band no matter where they’re from.

54/40 were excellent… “Miss you” might be my favorite by them but “Baby ran” is close too. Don’t know a lot BY the Odds, though I know of them and a few tunes by them… they seemed to fall through the cracks, even in Canada itself.

Baby Ran was the first song I heard by them and it was live in a club. They were very good. I am more familiar with 54-40 than the Odds. One of my sons is a big Odds fan.
Any hints on your next take?
(See the Jays had a intra squad game on the tube. I watched some it. Be good to get some meaningful games to watch)

well, it will be an earlier album than the REM one. I expect I’ll be giving some Can-Con a writeup or two as well before it’s over, though not in the second round.
Was Ian Thomas in the Odds? I always liked his stuff, listen to his greatest hits quite often actually.

Two great tunes from two great bands! And consider me fooled, CB. Here I thought you are in Cincinnati. I’m not sure where I got that idea from… Oh well, I guess I’m not really from Mars.
