Album : Mink DeVille – Coup De Grace

download (11)

Willy DeVille was like a character off those early Springsteen records. Mink DeVille was joined at the hip with Bruce and the E Streeters, Garland Jeffries, Lou Reed, South Side Johnny and the Asbury Jukes…. I think you get the idea. Same street vibe. New York City feel. I think they were drawing from the same musical well. Street romantics.

The first time i was exposed to this music was on some late night concert show I lucked into. If ever a guy suited his music it was Willy. His look, his voice his cock-sureness. He was his music. He sings with lots of soul, guts, love and emotion. One of the cuts on the album is titled ‘Love and Emotion’ and it’s a killer. He throws in a little accordion. Listen to this cut and you will get an idea what he’s all about.

There’s not a weak cut on the record. Right from the opening cut we are taken into Mink DeVille’s musical world. Lots of that old Drifters sound ‘Up On The Roof’ ‘Under The Boardwalk’ and that era in the mix. Lots of great sax breaks (which you know CB likes) But he puts his spin on it and makes it his music. You can hear Otis on ‘Teardrops Must Fall’. He does an Authur Alexander song ‘You Better Move On’. I didn’t know who Alexander was at the time but I found out thanks to this album (I have a great tribute album to Arthur). So much good music on this record. He rocks out on ‘Love Me Like You did Before’.

This is street corner singin DeVille style. If you like some of the references I’ve made check this out. Willy has a special place in my record pile. This album is romantic with an edge because Willy has an edge. Why it appealed to me. This is timeless music for me. He has lots of other good albums but try this on for size and see if it fits. Even Fred Flintstone and The Grand Poobah like this guy.

You’ve heard the saying “He thinks he’s so cool” well Willy DeVille knew he was cool. He was the real deal. Main thing is his musics is soooo cool. Give it a listen. That’s the tip for today.

Good one, CB. As usual with Willy and his band, the lyrics and harmonies touch the soul. I like it how he celebrates in “You Better Move On” fatally serious jealousy in a relaxed rumba beat.

I knew you liked this music Fox. He really did make some good stuff. Great stage presence also. He lived the songs.

I saw Willy twice on stage. He had great charisma and great musicians. Each cover from him was in his version his own original. A pity that he left us so soon.

I’m a little jealous on that one Fox. He was one of the regrets i have of not seeing live. Obviously he was received well over there. He made each song his own.

Willy DeVille gave often concerts in Switzerland. He had that slight arrogance that just passed through as grandezza. He liked to talk with the audience in grumpy-edged announcements, then he easily latch in the songs again as Rocky-Willy, Boogie-Bob or Honkytonk-Joe.

I guess it’s hard to keep it fresh. I think all artists go through that until they get to the part where they realize their pretty lucky that people come to hear their music.

Willy DeVille had a good sense for simple but haunting melodies. He was also an exceptional singer live, who perfectly mastered the art of phrasing. His Mariachi version of “Hey Joe” is just great.

I’d have loved to have seen the band in concert, or Willie when he went solo. They made my kind of music.

No kidding. What a tight band playing that great sound. Willie was perfect. I guess just a little rough for the mainstream. What a voice and commitment to the songs. Yeah being in that area I thought you might have caught him. Sad figure. Thanks as usual.

I know you like attitude and he had lots of that combined with great music. Lots to explore. Willie thanks you from where ever he is.
Great live clip of earlier song later performance. You can kinda see where he’s headed. The music was still great.

Th Knopler connection shows up in some of Willy’s music. So do a lot of others. He’s a fave of mine.

I like Willy quite a lot. He has all the braggadocio kinda street vibe you mentioned, and a kind of dramatic way of putting his songs across – it’s kind of old-fashioned, almost like Jay and the Americans, as strange as that may sound. I can easily hear him doing “Cara Mia” or “Come a Little Bit Closer” – he had that going on, too. Nice to see that you featured him.

I knew you liked him. You’re absolutely right about him on your take. And totally see him doing ‘Come A Little Bit Closer’. That “dramatic” thing is what Springsteen had in his first few records. Same vibe to me. He slipped through the cracks. Easy for me to feature. I dig his music. Kinda what CB does, Mouth off about music (film) I really like. The Grand will keep him alive.

Well, CB. Actually got out of the house and did a little driving around today. That’s when I listen to stuff like this. Now, I hadn’t remembered what you wrote so I was flying blind. If you had said “Play this and I won’t tell you what it is” I might have said, Graham Parker. And oh, the Big Man and Danny Federici are guests. And then there’s at least one tune that sounds like “Save the Last Dance for Me.” Interesting and unexpected combination. Totally dug it. This is from 1981. How does stuff like this sometimes go under my radar?

It amazes me how certain music goes “under the radar”. This guy was right in your wheelhouse and an East Coaster as well. Promotion, management .. etc play a part. Remember how Bruce stumbled out of the gate commercially. One of our common fave albums,’Wild Innocent ..’ didnt do anything commercially but how great is that record.
Willy was the real deal. Being the music historian you are you will find his story fascinating and sad. I think he was at that NY club CBGB’s back in the heyday when all the punk and various other music was popular there. Same vibe as all those guys I named in the take. Glad you liked it.

I was reading up on his story. Like I said, I heard of the band. But nobody I knew or nobody on the radio said “Listen to this band.” And yet I knew all the other CBGB bands.

Amazing that you missed him. You must have been in a state of Allman. I knew his story would appeal to your craving for that history I was talking about.
I remember when he did that song for that film Princess Bride. I kinda got a kick out of it.

ABB? No, they released an album around then but their time had come and gone. It wasn’t till the late 80’s or so when they came roaring back.
In that era I was listening to all the New Wave stuff. I was in a band too. Totally retro. So rockabilly, blues, Chuck Berry. And SRV wasn’t too long in showing up. And in the very year (1981) Coup de Grace came out, I saw Miles Davis on his comeback in Boston.

I was just giving you a shot about ABB. DeVille was around that area and era before and after the release of this album. ‘Coup’ might have been the 3rd or 4th album. I’ve picked up and still do music I’ve missed. It’s sort of a gift.

I’m sure I tried to put this comment up on this before, so I’ll try again!

I remember going to see Mink De Ville play at London’s The Venue near Victoria Station in 1980 and, getting there early, was hanging around in the foyer. The place was briefly empty and I could hear music, so I crept into the auditorium and stood at the back in the dark while Willy and the band did four or five songs as a sound and light check. There were only a handful of people in there, sound engineers and the band. Nobody noticed me there and Heaven stood still.
