Speaks his mind on music & movies!
Drum beat , 1 2 3 4, piano then Ian Hunter’s familiar vocals and you know you’re in good hands and are in rock n roll land. If you are a fan of Mott The Hoople then this album will be easy. If you’re a fan of rock n roll it should also be easy. The opening cut (Just Another Night) is just a very good rock song. Loose good time feel. This is just a continuation of the “All The Way From Memphis'” vibe.
I was getting so many good albums when this was released. I bought this record along with’Squeezing Out Sparks’ by Graham Parker on the same day. This album rocks and Ian gets some help from a few of the E Streeters (who were helping a few people in the day). Max Weinberg gets a workout on this. He and Gary Tallent lay down the foundation. Plus Mick Ronson is along to add his touches on guitar and producing.
The record is full of good cuts. ‘Wild East’ keeps it going after the first cut. A driving rock beat with piano and Ian’s vocals and then some of that sax I like. The first time I heard ‘Cleveland Rocks’ was when I put the needle down on this record. Max Weinberg pounds the speakers off the floor. If you’re a rocker how could you resist. Ronson and Max kill it on this one. “He’s a rocker and I am too” Ray Davies could have written this one. But he didn’t, Ian did. ‘Standing In My Light’, ‘Bastard’, ‘When The Daylight Comes’, Wild East’ and the rest make up one very good album.
Hunter is a rocker to the core who knows what he wants. He combines all the elements that go into that and lets it out in his distinct sound. Drums, guitars, organ, piano and some great rock n roll attitude by Ian. It always feels like he’s ready to bust out and let loose even on the more subdued numbers.
Hunter has always flown under the radar, don’t ask me why. CB thinks more people should know about him. I guess it’s like one of the titles off the record. He’s ‘The Outsider’. Schizophrenic’ was a great addition to my stack. Ian Hunter has recorded lots of really good music with Mott and solo. This is some of it. Check it out.
