CB’s Favorite Performances : Patricia Neal – Alma

patricia-neal

Alma is beautiful and Patricia Neal is the reason why. She is so natural in this role you think she’s a living, breathing person.

She gives a lesson on truthful acting. This isn’t easy to make it look this good. This is hard work, talent, instinct and believing in what your character is doing. This role was waiting and made for Patricia.

Like good athletes that make it look easy, Neal does the same thing with this role. Alma is one tough, sexy, no bullshit woman. She’s just trying to make ends meet as a house keeper. Do her job, earn her keep and that’s it. Not looking for favors or a tough time, she’s already had plenty of those. She’s been around the block.

Sometimes these kinds of roles are given to actresses that don’t have the chops or the life experience to carry them. That was not the case with Patricia Neal. She had it all and more. I love Alma.

I just love those down to earth, subtle naturalistic performances. Other actresses would have been acting, Neal just was. She nailed it. Yeah, it’s a good flick.

I just could never get friendly with Paul Newman as an actor. Patricia Neil’s life itself would provide enough material for screenwriters.

Yeah she had a life all right. What a fighter she was.
Pauls work could be a little uneven. He hit a few high notes with me on a few performances.

Hud is a terrific movie, a great examination of flawed character. I agree she’s amazingly natural in it, and I’ve liked her whenever I’ve seen her. “A Face In The Crowd” in particular, as well as “In Harm’s Way”, which I’ve seen a million times, but that’s a more minor role.

Not only a music guy but a film guy to boot.
I’ve seen Patricia in other things but this is the role that does it for me. She is Alma to the core. Great flick.
(Off topic. When I go to your station there’s music playing. Is that programmed but not live like Fridays?)

Yeah, huge TCM fan. I don’t watch much current stuff though. The auto-DJ runs all week except for Friday nights and a few Saturday nights. With no sports on and everyone now a shut-in, it’s a veritable hot spot now 😉

        TCM goes on good runs.
So you’re programming the music? I’m totally ignorant to all that tech stuff like I said. I’ve been locked into the Capaldi on Spotify. I guess I better get back on ‘The Grand’ for a bit. I think Patricia would have like your station.
I’m way ahead of this self isolation thing. I’ve been a recluse for years. Just when the Rangers were going to bring the cup back to NYC they shut it down. While I’m on this, do you want me to send a few listeners your way?

Yeah, the auto-DJ is presently at about 55 hours of music. I should probably add more, but the live shows are the focus. Running a station isn’t hard. With your wide-ranging taste, you’d be really good at it.

I’m taking shots from family and friends about being tailor-made for quarantine, too 😀

I guess I better tune into The Grand for some listening this week. CB is the worlds laziest human being. He likes when others do all the work.
Slapped on the hazmat suit and took J J Cale for a walk yesterday. Still using a Disc-man.

Haven’t seen this in a long time. I disagree about Newman. Thought he was terrific in this and so much other stuff.

Keep your shorts on Doc. Newman was great in this. I think in my take on the film I said he started hitting his stride as an actor for me. I think I’ve did a few takes on his films. Luke, Pocket Money etc.

Ok, Ok. I’m coming down off the fucking ledge now. Don’t forget “The Verdict.” And I love “The Sting.”

I liked his piss tank lawyer. I’m a big fan of ‘Hombre’. I want to revisit ‘Nobody’s Fool. I liked it when I first saw it.
Neal was a perfect foil in Hud. She was a hard doll that had his number.

I don’t remember ‘Hombre’ other than the title. ‘Nobody’s Fool’ was good, ‘Hustler.’ Neal was good. She had, like, a hundred heart attacks if I recall correctly

Hombre. I did a take. In a mood for a duster some night grab it.
        Shes quite a story.

Jeez, how far back I’m I with my CB posts? Where does the time go? I haven’t stopped thinking about this movie since I watched it. A knock-out performance.

You’ve been busy watching movies. I’m reading Larry McMurtry’s Texas Trilogy right now. It’s where Hud came from.
