CB doesn’t usually pick favorite songs by artists but I will with this one. This is my favorite Bob song. I remember hearing it on the radio when it came out and instantly liking it. It has just grown over the years. What a great piece of music.
When Sam Peckinpah used it in his film ‘Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid’ it made me like it even more. A lot of music and songs have been used to enhance film scenes but none used any better than this song . Slim Pickens is gut shot and staggers off to die and his woman Katy Jurado follows and watches him. I get shivers thinking about it and watching it.
This is the song that made me like Bob. Two and a half minutes of great story telling. First Dylan album I bought was the soundtrack to the film and it’s a favorite. Did I say I like this song? I think I did.
Can’t argue with this one as a pick. (Avoid the Guns ‘n Roses version.) That said, if I had to pick a favorite Zimmerman song, it’s kinda hard. But the first one that came to mind was ‘Positively 4th Street,’ his FU to some of his old Village mates.
“I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment, I could be you
Yes I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is to see you.”

He has lots of tunes and albums I like. Bob grew on me after this song. That GNR thing ….. probably made Zimmerman a few bucks though

I do like those lyrics you posted. Sort of a W.C. Fields vibe.

I was thinking Benny Hill.

I like the Dylan original. It’s kind of annoying that every wannabe musician who comes along covers this song. That’s why I can only enjoy the song in the original version.

I agree on the original being special. Clapton’s version wasnt bad. Funny thing Fox, I was listening to a Garcia, Grisman and Rice album yesterday and they do a version. Not bad. But the original is still the one for me.

I like the original. Dylan used to sing different verses on his concert tours on this song each time.

Good choice here CB, I too always liked this song and always preferred the original…although Brian Ferry did a nice cover back in the nineties…Greetings my friend and all the best!

Thanks for dropping by Francisco. It is a good song in my listening habit. I will check out the ferry version right now.

Just listened to Ferry’s version. Yeah it’s good. He does good covers. I like his Jealous Guy take.

I forgot how emotional that scene was with the song. Back when Bob’s voice was good.

Sam knew what he was doing when putting a film together. That scene rips my guts out.
“Back when Bob’s voice was good”. I like that. Thing is I like his his old worn out, gutteral, cant understand a thing he’s singing voice also.

BTW, it may interest C to the B to know that a chum and I went out last night and saw the new Scorsese movie. It mines a lot of that same “manly men crime saga” territory that he pretty much owns. They got the band back together (DeNiro, Pesci, Keitel, Pacino. Actually, first time for Al in a Scorsese flick. ) Watching it was like eating comfort food. On the other hand, I was hoping he’d break some new ground. Enjoyed it quite a bit but at 3 1/2 hours, too long. And while very good, somewhat overrated I think. But still, if you’re a fan of great movie-making, this is the one to see.

i would have joined you for a night out. Sounds pretty true to form. I havent caught a lot of any of those guys recent works. I’ll catch this just because. 3 1/2 is kinda scary.
Your take would have made a good ME minic flick review.

CB well knows that the Doc is the Music Enthusiast not the movie guy. I don’t know exactly what CB’s film background is but rumor has it he did Oklahoma at dinner theater in Toronto once upon a time. BTW, you’ll have ample opportunity to see the flick. Netflix financed it and it’ll be streaming by end of month. They release it in theaters for Oscar nod. This year’s best actor and actress? Pesci and Renee Zellweger.

I think your talking about that one about ‘Marrying A Lighthouse Keeper’. Or was it ‘Me Tangerine Man’?

Yeah I was thinking about that one after I thought about ‘Some Idiot Passed Wind’. I can’t remember who cut the original.

A good pick. Have I ever told you that the first version I ever heard was by Axl & Co. Terrible. I made up my mind that it was dreadful. Second time I heard it was from my uncle. Singing it while randomly strumming the guitar. Between slugs from bottle of beer. Ever so slightly out of tune.
Then I heard this (in the film) and was like “uncle Danny was right… this is a good tune”.
My favourite Dylan tune is probably the Man in the Long Black Coat.

It’s funny how this take thing goes. I did set out to spark peoples fave Bob tunes but it seems to be happening.
Very cool that you’d pick that tune. Did the Cash thing help? It is a very cool song from a good record.
Yeah the GNR thing is not my style. I love the soundtrack Knockin is from. A fave album.

Y’know, I don’t quite know why it struck me. It just felt like a mini-movie, y’know? Incredible tune… and vividly painted. The feel of the breeze… the humidity… the slight buzzing in the ears. That feeling of anxiety. And I keep going back to it.

Yeah it’s that personal connection we have with the music, words etc. Bob likes playing with words but he is also pretty good at bringing the right musicians on board to help set that mood. Good stuff!

While I find Dylan is a mixed bag, the man undoubtedly is a genius, and I dig a good number of his tunes. This one is definitely among my favorite Dylan tunes. I like Clapton’s cover as well.

I like Bob. He was never one of my top listens but over the years i have listened to lots of his music and have become a fan.
Yeah Clapton did this song justice.

When Dylan strips it all back he excels. There’s some nice little tunes on this album, it’s too often overlooked.
The G ‘n’ R thing… have you seen the ‘Give me some reggae’ video? Sums it all up really.

I love the album this was taken from and the “striped” back applies’
I’m a little scared on that GNR thing. You have me curious but in a apprehensive way. I would guess that old Bob made a wheel-barrel load of money off their version. That’s positive.

Well, as you asked….
For some undefinable reason that probably involved a lot of ego and substances that fuel ego, Mr Rose would always – back in the 90’s this is – call out ‘give me some reggae’ during performances of Knockin…
Again – who knows why, it’s hardly a) a reggae song and b) what the band would play hardly constitutes reggae….
But, the internet is a wonderful thing and the ability to loop means wonderful things can be enjoyed for hours, And terrible things can be suffered for hours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gT-Gi0wAusQ

I don’t know if that is my #1 Dylan song- but it’s pretty close to the top! Great tune! A Bob Top 100 would still be leaving great songs off. In Bob We Trust.

I agree on the Clapton version. GNR seems to be a unanimous “not like” on the comments.

Love Knocking on Heavens Door…It was the first Dylan song I ever heard…when I watched the movie it made me like it even more. Sometimes it’s the small things in songs that attract me…listen to the drums on this cut…the delay on the drums fill in that empty space perfectly.

Total agreement. This album might show up on Hans’s deal.
