Album : Steve Forbert – Alive On Arrival

download (22)

I probably listened to this record more than most of the albums I have. This was my introduction to Steve Forbert and his music. Nothing sophisticated or mind boggling    just great songwriting delivered with the perfect voice for it. I remember when this album was released and some folks were hanging the Dylan/ Springsteen thing on him. I guess there are some similarities but Steve is his own guy.

CB likes words and people who have the talent to string them together to create images and emotions. Forbert does that for me. I just dig his vibe. His music puts me in a good space.

The opening cut ‘Going Down To Laurel’ still sounds good after all these years. So many good cuts. ‘Thinkin’ is pointed at CB or he thinks it is. ‘What Kinda Guy’ would have fit on Springsteen’s Nebraska. It’s a very catchy acoustic rocker. A favorite. ‘Big City Cat’ and ‘Grand Central Station’ (a street musicians lament, beautiful) have to be born out of life experience (hell the whole album is). It’s been said to write from what you know. I think .Forbert does that on this record. The last 3 cuts take the album out with. ‘You Cannot Win If You Do Not Play’ ends the record with a bang. A CB style rocker.

There is only so much music you can spend time with. I always felt my time was well spent with people like Forbert. Never disappoints. He sings with feeling and emotion. He’s a special talent in my book. No filler on this vinyl. Bunch of very good songs that add up to make a very good record.

Another one of the best debut albums I own (all his albums are worth the time and I have a few). It’s like an old friend. He still performs and from what I hear, gives you your money’s worth. I was lucky enough to see him a few times. Great nights.

(  Vinyl Connection did a little bit on some Steve Forbert music he came across in his travels. He said something interesting about the music he was listening to bands like Yes, King Crimson etc and here’s this guy with a guitar , harmonica getting his attention. Me too Bruce)

This album still sounds 40 years later so fresh.

I’m glad that Forbert has been able to make a living from music for all these years. He passes thru my area two or three or more times every year. Take care, CB.

I still have some Forbert on my list, but I haven’t made time for him yet. I’ll need to rectify that.

I will look it up. It’s rare I’ve never even seen someone’s name though.

Yeah with your resources etc it is kinda surprising. I know there’s a few others like myself that dig him big-time. He certainly wasn’t mainstream. I’m trying to think of someone who covered one of his songs. Blank , which is rare for such a good songwriter.

I think just about the only song I know by him is ‘Romeo’s Tune’ which was a reasonably good-sized hit. His name pops up here and there. I’ll give this album a spin.

He’s good Doc. I see your other comment. Truth be known I listen to him more than I do Zim. He fits that singer song writer genre you eat up. I’d say he’s closer the Bruce as far as lyrics go.

He’s a guy I overlooked. I’ll give it a spin. I think any singer/songwriter would have to be phenomenal, though, to have any hope of replacing Dylan in my affections. Or for that matter, Bruce.

BTW, every couple years or so – at least at one point in time – some guy or another was appointed the new Dylan. Or some band the new Beales. So it goes.

While I had heard his name on prior occasions, I didn’t know any of Steve Forbert’s music. Then, earlier this evening, I spotted an email from the Iridium in NYC, announcing upcoming shows including Forbert (Dec. 5). Among others, they also have Albert Lee and Ana Popovic in Jan and Feb, respectively.

Back to Forbert. Prompted by the Iridium promo, I listened to his most recent album “The Magic Tree” from last year. I liked what I heard. Do you know it?

Well, in any case, afterwards I recalled your post, and I’m currently checking out “Alive on Arrival.” It sounds great as well!

I’m definitely planning to listen to more of Forbert’s music.

No I don’t know the newest album yet. Like others who I really like (The Who, Springsteen, Young etc) I sometimes have to catch up. But with people like Forbert It’s like I know what I’m going to get. Some real good listening with a high standard.
Steve has been one of my favorites for years. I know you like words Christain and SF puts them together well.
It was guys like him that took my listening away from more commercial and popular artists. I never felt cheated. The contrary. Rewarded would be the word. I hope you find some enjoyment in his music.
