Music Single : Steve Earle – NYC

images (10)

Earle rocks out with backing from The Supersuckers on CB’s favorite song about New York City. This song starts out as an acoustic thing then explodes into a rocker. Country boy hits the big city.

Great lyrics, hard edge done in Steve Earle’s unique style. Great cut off a really good album. Earle can play just about any style. People try to pigeonhole him but that doesn’t work. He’s been making good music for a long time. He’s all over the map musically, He gives a good taste of what he does on this cut. I love it. Great song!

This is a hard rock song done Steve style. Love the story it tells.

“Heard the girls are pretty”. But they wouldn’t talk to Steve.

Good song about NYC. Steve Earle has always been a walking anachronism.

You’re right, I don’t think he cares about the latest trends but man does he make good music. This music is there to balance that other stuff that’s kicking around

I like Steve Earle. He’s one of the most reliable blues folk, country and rock’n’roll songwriters, even though he usually doesn’t reach the big crowd. He also opposes against social injustice and political unreasonableness in the spirit of the American tradition of a Woody Guthrie.

He’s my type of guy musically and away from the music also. He is consistently good his his choices. Never a bad turn. A favorite for sure.

I don’t go much to concerts anymore, but four years ago I saw Steve Earle at the Volkshaus in Zurich. It was a fantastic two hour concert. Earle is one of those guys who gets better with each each song, and finally boisterous celebrated by the audience.

Fortunate to catch him a couple times. Amazes me that his music translates to a Zurich audience. Just shows how music moves people. Good stuff.

He may not reach the crowd of Ryan Adams and Wilco fans. But Steve Earle has a loyal fan base in Germany and Switzerland.

‘Midnight Cowboy’. It’s time we made a similar updated story. Like the idea.

Indeed I never thought that- but it well could be a Midnight Cowboy in the making.

Not a remake new story. CB could be the guy. I’ve never been to NY “They tell me it’s big”

Been kinda poking along at grabbing some Earle on vinyl when I see it at a decent price. Copperhead Road I scored a few weeks back.

He’s a good mixed bag deKE. I could feature one of his tunes or albums every week. I seen him when he toured ‘Copperhead’ great show and hot band. Good pick up on your part. I think the Pogues are on that one.

That was a great band CB! Steve’s live album ‘Shut up and die like an Aviator’ is excellent.

Ha! We were just (sort of) talking about Earle and here he comes. Guess I misjudged his output. Good tune. Has CB seriously never been to NYC or was he just quoting something? BTW, you gave me an idea for a post.

Earle is all over the music map and does it all well. Closest I came to NY was hanging with Ben Gazzarra for a while.
Now you have me curious about that idea you have.

What the hell is stopping you, man? You gotta visit there at least once. I lived there for a couple of years back in the “Times Square looked like Taxi Driver” days. And then again a number of years later. I agree with the earlier assertion that it’s a nice place to visit. Too fucking crowded.

I have a buddy there but he’s in love with the idea of the place. I do like the ‘Taxi Driver’ feel. Is there anything like it anymore?
I just like Earle’s small town guy hitting the big city full of expectations and getting kicked in the balls by the reality

That seedy, lowlife Times Square is long, long gone. Now it’s like Disneyland.

This is a great pick CB, I do love me some Earle. Not my fave New York song though – I’d go for Dion ‘King Of The New York Streets’, just for that line about turning gangs into fertilizer.

Just listened to it. Very good. I might of jumped the gun. Garland Jeffreys ‘New York Skyline’ has been on my spin list for the longest. Plus it has the sax.
I guess it depends on which one I’m listening to.

Great pick, CB. Always good to hear some Steve Earle. I’ve been listening to a bunch of his more recent stuff recently… some of it I haven’t listened to in a couple of years and I’d forgotten how good it was (Jerusalem) and others I hadn’t delved into yet (like his last album).

Anyway, El Carazon is a cracker, eh? His boy and Emmylou are on there, too… though I can’t remember what tracks.

I listen to Justin quite a bit too. He’s a helluva songwriter.

I’d welcome reading a weekly Earle take, CB.

Good to know you dig his lad’s tunes. I thought you would… he knows how to write. There’s a great performance from Letterman about 10 years ago… he really rises above just being his father’s son, y’know.
