I think you all know that CB is a big fan of The Band. When I went to see “The Last Waltz there’s a scene where Martin Scorsese is walking through a recording studio with Rick Danko talking about what he, Danko is up to. Rick ends up sitting at the control board in the mixing room and says in his laid back way “Just making music”. The scene is then taken over by a song I had never heard before. It’s Danko singing and I had to find that record. I did and this is the album that it’s on. The song was ‘Sip The Wine”. I still get a few chills when I hear it.
I always loved what Danko brought to the Band. His bass playing, his presence and most of all his beautiful vocals. I love his voice and the way he delivers it. I also love the emotion he puts into every thing he sings. His voice is one of my favorites. So I get a whole album of something I really like.
The songs all have a definite Band vibe (the boys are all on board to help) but this album is all Rick’s. He gets a lot of help from people like Clapton, Doug Sahm, Ronnie Wood. ‘What A Town’ opens the album and it is the first of a great bunch of songs. ‘Brainwash’, ‘Small Town Talk’,’New Mexicoe’ (J J Cale vibe). I always get a little sad when I hear this tune. I guess I miss the guy. Clapton and Hudson add the perfect touches. ‘Sip The Wine’ is the song that brought me here and it delivers with Doug Sahm providing some tasty guitar and more of Rick’s passionate vocals. ‘Java Blues’ is a funky, rockin tune.
Danko is one of my favorite singers. His sound always got me. I like his phrasing. Sometimes it’s like he’s going to run out of breath and not finish. He stretches it. Sometimes it’s almost like talk singing. He was one of the reasons I liked The Band. When I listen to this it’s obvious what a big part he was.
I have most of the Band members solo records but this is the one I listen to the most. This is one of my favorite albums period. Special place in my pile. Rick Danko is in the spotlight on his first solo record and I absolutely dig it.
“There’s a child here who wants to start livin”
I have to get this album. I don’t really know it.
Have you heard the Danko/Fjeld/Andersen album? It’s a good one.
Enjoy the day, CB. Be seeing you.

If you liked his work with the Band it’s a no brainer. Same vibe. I really like it as you probably figured out.
Yes I do have that said album and yes it’s a good one.
Later fella.

Nice, CB to feature those albums by dudes that are not the main guy in the public eye!

It’s easy deKE. I love the record. You do the same thing. I’d be curious how much vinyl of this one is around?

I’m sure Discogs would have it.

I remember hearing this too on the Last Waltz and being captivated by it. Fascinating post CB about a stupendous talent in Rick Danko. I too love his voice. He was blessed.

I thought it was a cool scene in the film and then the music just capped it for me. Yeah I’m a Danko guy. His vocals appeal to my ears. Miss the guy. Later fella.

Yeh, I’ll probably reblog your post one day if you don’t mind. I downloaded the song and added it to my library. Thanks a bunch for making me aware of it. I hope I hear the album one day too.

No problem and help yourself to the take. Just glad to spread the word an album and a guy I dig.

Thanks, that’s good of you. I couldn’t have done the song and justice like you did. Cheers.

No problem. And thanks for the kind words.

This album sounds terrific. I had not known it. Unfortunately, it’s not available with my streaming music provider, but I found most of the tracks on YouTube.

I’m getting the sense that it isn’t wisely available. Maybe my old vinyl is worth a couple bucks. Anyways it has lots of good music on it and scratches that band itch if you have it.

This particular album doesn’t appear to be on Spotify but there’s a shitload of “live” stuff I think I’ll give a listen to. Plus the Danko/Fjeld/Andersen album is up there.

The “Live” stuff is a mixed bag. Lots of good stuff and yeah the Fjeld/Anderson is also good.
This album has that feel from when The band were still a band. Lots of help like I said and there are some stand out moments. The New Mexicoe’ cut with Clapton and Garth has some nice touches. Some real tasty guitar throughout. I thin k this would scratch your itch for some of that old sound if you haven’t heard it.
(Why do you suppose Spotify wouldn’t have it?)

While Spotify has a pretty gigantic library, over time I’ve noticed that there are occasional missing albums. From what I can tell, these can be rights issues or sometimes the label/artist for one reason or another doesn’t bother submitting it. Maybe it went out of print, not enough demand, nobody cared enough, etc.

That all make sense.

I should stop making sense.

I may try to find it on YouTube like Christian did. Maybe you could buy it for me for Christmas.

Pete found it. Maybe the same place as Christian (I have to pay his site a visit).
I’m getting on that gift idea right away. Along with a cowboy hat, boots and a steel guitar. Six pack and some chew.

He has an unusual voice, and I’m not sure it would fit in with any group other than The Band. I remember seeing him perform “Java Blues” on U.S. television right after this album came out.

Yeah he kind of got a bit of momentum after the Last Waltz. I remember seeing him right after on different programs doing songs from this album.
“Unusual” voice but music to my ears.

I took your cue and listened to the whole album. What a sweet, sweet record. All I can say is TJDMTLTA (“They Just Don’t Make Them Like That Anymore”).

Oh yeah I think you caught the vibe. Absolutely on the TJDMTLTA!

I don’t know this at all. Sounds like a raggedy Jackson Browne to me and I mean that in an entirely complimentary way.

He was sort of “raggedy” for sure.

Danko and Hudson were The Band’s underdogs.

Big fan of both those guys. Garth balances out Robertson’s talkativeness.

I don’t know this at all. In fact, the only Band solo stuff I know is Levon’s. I don’t know why. Anyhoo, I like this. It’s my kinda vibes… so again, I’ll need to look at getting a listen of this.

I think it flew well below the radar. I love the album (Levon’s also)

I’m gonna refresh the tunes on my ‘portable listening device’ this evening, so this is on the list for looking for.

I should really have this album. Sip The Wine is a beautiful track. What a great artist he was. Not surprised you love The Band, me too, although I don’t even have all of their output.

I’m a band guy and this solo album by Danko is a gem. Thanks for dropping by.

I want to hear more of this CB… he was the best harmony singer in rock. He has an exciting voice…like you said it feels like he is going to run out of breath but he always pulls it off.
