Without a doubt one of my all time favorite film performances is Eli Wallach in ‘The Good, The Bad, The Ugly. He steals the show and it’s a big show to steal it from. I’ve seen ‘The GBU’ to many times to count. Eli is a force of nature in it. He is relentless. He never takes a scene off. He’s nasty, selfish, dirty, ignorant, a liar, violent, funny and a genuine badass.
Wallach breaths life into the character. He makes him a living, breathing person (not a very nice person). Sergio Leone had a stroke of genius in this casting choice. Just say “action’ and let Eli do his thing. He has some big emotional swings. Mostly he’s a self serving, self centered bandit but in a scene with his brother you get some background that might explain a little of why he is the way he is. Wallach as the character “Tuco” stands into this motivation. It justifies his choices to himself as the character. No apologies. If there was one donut left between him and you he would wolf it down and give you a big grin with donut falling out of his mouth. He’s that kind of guy. You can see Van Cleef and Eastwood totally engaged in his performance. I know I was.
Eli Wallach was a great actor and in this role he more than proved it. 11 out of 10 on the CB Meter.
“Blooooondeeeee”
“I’m looking for the owner of that horse. He’s tall, blonde, he smokes a cigar and he’s a pig”
Yep, Eli Wallach is terrific – incredible attention to detail. The movie is full of irony and yet serious. I love this.

He had chemistry with everyone in the film especially Eastwood.

There is only one Spaghetti Western I like more: “Once Upon A Time In The West”, by a certain… Sergio Leone.

The movie theatre was never bigger in my youth than with a film by Sergio Leone…

Eli’s face filled the screen. That’s what the experience was supposed to be about. Do you think Sergio made them to be viewed on a phone?

I think we both agree that Leone’s images are not made for a iphone.

The bigger the screen the better.

Morning, CB. He had a long career. I liked him a lot in The Misfits, which is such a great movie.
Bye till next time!

Oddly enough, either I never saw this or I saw it so long ago I can’t remember it. We may have discussed this one before. At the place where I’m currently working the big boss has a poster of this movie on his wall and his phone ringtone is the movie theme. A serious fan. I’ve never asked him about it because he is not the kind of guy you sit around and chit-chat with.

Come on Doc, GBU and Bridge On The River Kwai are yearly watches.
Yes you mentioned the poster and the ring tone. Earls brother has the same one on his phone.
Anyways talking about awards, hall of fames etc, Eli gets the CB blue ribbon for his work as Tuco.

There’s so much good stuff . You have Ennio Morrconi’s soundtrack which would probably sound good coming through your sound system. Tell the wife it’s a romantic comedy.

She saw it years ago at the drive-in. For the record, she’s about as much a romcom fan as CB. She loves a good courtroom drama.

It’s officially on the record. She can join my Gal and me any night for a flick.

Good. That’ll give me some much-needed ‘alone’ time.

Wallach/”Tuco” does indeed “steal the show.” (Eastwood and Van Cleef have great screen presence, but are typecast.) I’m not sure how much freedom Leone gave Wallach, but he was perfect in this part. He also played a Mexican badass in The Magnificent Seven, without the humor, and his role there isn’t as memorable.

I think Leone’s job was made easy with his casting choices. Half the battle. Worked for me.
Yeah Eli was good in “7” but more of a cameo but he did have a presence.
Being a man of adventure and the sea Pete, how a bout his role in ‘Lord Jim’. He was good in that also. I figure you for a Conrad type guy.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to “sea” the movie Lord Jim. Never have, though I read the book.

Eli Wallach was great in The Good, The Bad, The Ugly and I ought to check out his other notable roles. Thanks for shining a light on this film/performance

His performance is the first one I’m featuring on this new take. That kind of puts it in perspective on how much I like it. He has a pretty solid slate of work.

“I’m looking for the owner of that horse. He’s tall, blonde, he smokes a cigar and he’s a pig”. Yasss! One of my top 5 movies right here – have I told you that? I must have. If not, well, I am now. Used to watch this on January 1st. This and the original Star Wars trilogy (perfect for a hangover).

GB&U and ‘River Kwai’ are pulled out on a regular basis.
I was always waiting for Lucas’s ‘American Graffiti’ trilogy.

Haha. He’d have fucked it with digital remastering and CGI.

Probably about all he missed when he did those special editions!

Toad on his spaced out scooter. Still one of my favorite openings when he slams his scooter into the garbage can. I still laugh.
