Album : Elvis Costello – My Aim Is True

When this album came out it is was something new and fresh and CB liked it right away. There was a certain energy about it. Combined with a distinct voice, great lyrics (chock full) to go with that voice, the music was tight. I also found a lot of humor in it. The lyrics on Mystery Man are an example. “Why do you have to say there’s always someone who can do it better than I can”. Ouch!

The music felt like it came from some new place. Costello is confident (and so is the music) and is drawing on a lot of influences. The album title fits, He was ready to bring his music out to share.

I remember later someone hung an “angry” label on him. I didn’t get that vibe at all. This album for me was a feel good listen. It felt like some kind of celebration, “Here I am ” thing. The songs are short and catchy and he crams so much into each one of them.

Like I said I was hearing all sorts of influences in the songs. CB was a rocker and ‘Mystery Dance’ scratched that itch. A minute and a half of where CB was at then. Not a bad cut (why it’s a favorite album). ‘Alison’ is one of those “Girl songs”. The album title is in the lyrics and romantic CB loved it. ‘Sneaky Feelings’ is a cool little tune with some nice guitar licks. OK the character in ‘I’m Not Angry’ is angry but he says he’s not. Great song. ‘Less Than Zero’ got in my head and it’s still there. ‘Waiting For The End Of The World’ is kind of greasy and I dig it. Being a film guy especially crime flicks, how could ‘Watching The Detectives ‘ miss with me? It didn’t. It’s just got better over the years. I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking “What the fuck is this?” I didn’t know, but what a cool unique tune.

EC and the Attractions went on to make a wealth of great music. You kinda had a feeling at the time that there was more to come from this guy but I enjoyed this one and still bust it out for a listen. Another great album cover. Great album Elvis.

Nobody has ever said “Don’t get cute” to CB.

Must have been pretty obscure in USA, right?

Not at all, A. This was a pretty well-known, well-played album.

According to Wikipedia, it peaked just outside the top 30, and was the #68 best selling album of 1978. So I guess it probably didn’t make him a household name, but you’d probably pick up on him if you were into music.

Where i was at it was an off beat listen. I was lucky that some people turned me onto it and also there was an independent record store (had a spot on one of the local radio stations at a shit time once a week. I’d tune in) that I used to go to. The guys that ran the place were on top of stuff like this. But not on most of the radar where I was. I think Linda Ronstadt’s cover got the play but I cant remember how close to the release of the album that was.
Bottom line it was a kick in the right direction for my ears at the time.

Definitely not a household name but wildly critically acclaimed and justifiably so. Back then, rock was still very much in its heyday and we were hungry for anything good. But this and the two follow-up albums got lots of FM play..And it didn’t hurt that Ronstadt covered ‘Alison’ and raised his profile.

At this time so many people were making good music. My record pile grew like crazy. In my next few takes it will show, guys like Nick Lowe, Parker, Edmunds, It was a good creative time.
Linda’s cover was what you said it was plus it wasn’t bad. I still like the original. It was like Joan Baez doing The Bands ‘Dixie’, raised the profile. The Joan version doesn’t do it for me.

Elvis wasn’t crazy about Ronstadt’s version and a lot of people thought she was just trying to stay relevant by jumping on the punk train. Speaking of her there’s a documentary in theaters now about her. I’ll wait for that to show up on streaming.

Never listened to her except when she cut those records with Nelson Riddle. I betcha Elvis liked the residuals.

A fine debut album, full of the promise that would later flower on the next two albums, but in spot he sounds like he’s copying that other famous Elvis (not that there’s anything wrong with that). And Clover’s nowhere near the Attractions. I would say “This Year’s Model” is the place to start, “My Aim is True” is one to get too.

So many Elvis (the original Elvis too) records to feature. I had to start somewhere.
Good to have you back Fox.

I bought this album in 1977, when I was one of those angry young men and I still can say that this is all very well done. He combined basic skeletal rock and roll sound with a lyrical wit to make rock and roll for grownups. He may look like Buddy Holly, but his name is Elvis? Costello? You’re right CB, on have to start somewhere.

Declan has a great way with words but you know what Fox? I like when he rocks. It’s what initially brought me to him. He’s a full package of musical ideas. I always take note when he cuts loose. ’13 Steps Lead Down’ is a great example

I think, according to Costello’s standards, is “My Aim Is True” a unique record. And Nick Lowe had enough studio experience to make it as a “real” album, not just a collection of demos.

deKE, why I have never picked that up is bad on me. Pure ignorance. I will correct.
Here’s one of those music things. A while ago I heard your buddy Ace (who you turned me onto) doing Cream’s ‘White Room’. Really dug it. Then I hear Ella Fitzgerald doing ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’ which was a bit of a “What the #$^&^”. Then I wake up this morning and Ginger Baker passed away. I loved that guy.

Boy, I love this album. Desert Island for sure. And yeah, Clover was the band. Huey Lewis was in it but didn’t play on this album. I dunno, though. They get heat for not being the Attractions. But they managed to make “Watching the Detectives” pretty menacing for all that.

Elvisisking. Those first four Elvis albums were played to death by me back in the late 70’s- early 80’s- and of course they remain all time favorites. Never get tired of listening to them. Again we are loving the same stuff!

If I had a Dollar for every time I played this when it came out!

Saw him many times in pub/club venues before he hit the big time.

He has a hatful of great songs to his name.

A big hat. Seeing him back then would have been a kick. He lives part time in my area. My brother runs into him once in a while walking their dogs. There’s a song title ‘Walking The Dog”. Maybe add some music to it see how it goes.

I’m not really familiar with this. My brother likes him loads, but he has more punk leanings that me. He did give me a copy of Armed Forces a few years back, which I like (though I haven’t dug it out in a while).

Throw on this one and see if it grabs you. Just rock n roll really. Lots of humor. This album was the reason I liked the guy.

I remember seeing this in our small town drugstore in 1977 or 78. They were playing it and it was new…I never heard anything like it before. Brilliant writer and loved his arrangements.

Possibly still my favourite Costello record. No Dancing, Miracle Man, Working Week if that’s the first three songs (from memory,) then that’s unbeatable.
