A retired FBI profiler with physical and emotional scars is drawn back to help catch a serial killer. He wants to help and keep his distance at the same time. But that is not how it works. He’s pulled into the case full force because there is no half measures in his methods. He becomes obsessed or maybe even possessed by the killers mindset. He visits a serial killer that he helped put in prison to try and catch any kind of edge he can get. He methodically works his way towards catching and stopping the killer but is he going to make it in time before more people die? Or he has another breakdown.
I went to see this film because it was based on a book I read ‘The Red Dragon’ by Thomas Harris. I loved the book and I loved the film. It has tons of style and atmosphere courtesy of Michael Mann (maybe a little Kubrick influence). He made a very very good film that had my interest and senses stimulated. From his camera work, pace, environment, tone. His use of music (great soundtrack)really enhanced the film for me. It helped tell his story. I found that it was perfect for what he envisioned and heard.
None of the actors were known to me at the time and they are all well cast. Joan Allen, Tom Noonan are perfect in their roles. William Pederson as the profiler is real solid and brings a subtle touch that the role required. You feel his wheels turning as he gets draw deeper into the circumstances. But the kicker as far as the performances go is Brian Cox. He is out and out absolutely fantastic. I remember thinking when watching this film and when he appears on screen that I was no longer watching a film actor but a living breathing highly intelligent psychopath. A great film moment for CB.
I remember when I saw this for the first time that I was seeing a very good and a very different film. I have seen it various times since and still enjoy it. If you want a real different film experience visual, a thriller, a slow burn with an explosive climax and so much sensory stimulation check out ‘Manhunter’. A CB favorite. Oh yeah it spawned a few other remakes etc but this is the one for me. It has aged well.

CB, this one is in my wheelhouse. Mars and I have the Blu Ray. I love the atmosphere of it. The surprising start. William Pederson is great, better than any “CSI” role. I love Silence of the Lambs, but this one is excellent too and not talked about much. Great review! Cya! ✌

Good pick up on the Blu Ray. I actually had it on VHS. Anyways great flick and I also liked “Lambs”. Some movies just fly under the radar (that’s ok with me) and this is one for sure. And your right Pederson is good in this. Thanks for chipping in.

Great film. I love Michael Mann and was blown away by Cox in this. Only gripe is that Mann never seems to end films all that well. Thought the “climax” was a bit flat in this.

This is the Mann film that did it for me.Cox with be getting a take down the road for his work in this. He steals the show.
HMO, when talking “climax” are you meaning after take down the “Tooth Fairy”? I liked when Will finally gets to the house. Thought it exploded and I thought Iron Butterfly supplied the right tune.

Yeah that’s the bit. Didn’t do much for me I’m afraid. It’s OK but seemed a bit undercooked as an ending to me.

I get it. For me it was a slow burn for most of the film so it felt like a release. Sort of had that Sam Peckinpah feel.
I’m not familiar with all Mann’s but directors do get locked into ideas.

Loved the book (if ‘loved’ is the right verb there), I have distant memories of this being good and creepy.

You can “Love” a book. It’s called “Book Love”. Yes it’s “good and creepy”. Good use of music also.
(I guess you like the result today. In the honest 1537 way and all things being equal hows it look for your guys to take it all?)

I think after my country men take on NZ they will be making a move to more “music, books, film, art, ice bags and lots of beer.

Hi CB. I haven’t seen this, but I’ll file it away for possible viewing. We got Netflix recently. Maybe it’s there.
I saw Los Lonely Boys a few nights ago. Loud and rocking!

It has a place in my viewing history. Cox’s performance was a big reason.
My daughter got us hooked up with Flix (Don’t use it a lot but it’s a good option). Hit and miss but I do like the international choices. I think the US feed has more options. That’s what I heard.
Have heard the name but not the music. A CB type band? “Loud and rocking usually works.

You’d like this band. It’s a power trio. Three siblings, all male, form the group. Henry, JoJo and Ringo. Ringo, of course, is the drummer.

I’ll give them a spin today

Oh man you chose a fucking belter here CB. Love this film – it’s so dark and moody but typical of Mann’s earlier stuff (like LA Takedown) or even Collateral; he’s aced that slow burn, dark vibe and style that just pulls you in gets me rocking. Now there’s a director that could nail an Ellroy screenplay…

I figured you’d pipe in on this one. Lots of style and substance. Interesting choice for an Ellroy story. If the studios left them alone i think it would be a killer.

I think I saw this a while back but I’ll have to check it out again soon. My wife loves the stuff with Hannibal Lecktor. She’s also a big Petersen fan and watched CSI relentlessly. He seems to have largely disappeared after leaving the show, taking, I guess, his pile of cash and hitting the road. Anyway, we’ll queue this up.

Id be interested in her take on Cox as Lecktor. He’s the man. I think you’d dig the soundtrack also Doc. I seen Pederson in a few things after this but they didn’t grab me like this one,

I haven’t seen this in a while, but I’m a big fan of this one, CB. And spot on about the performances… especially from Cox, but they’re all good. The remake with Norton pales in comparison.

This one sticks with you. The one you mentioned is forgettable. The original is a special film. Cox’s performance is legend in my mind.

Mads? No idea

I’ve only seen the first season. It’s more about Hannibal (being called Hannibal), but it pulls together different elements of those books. It’s very dark.

I read ‘Red Dragon” (fantastic) and then a couple others after. They didnt grab me. maybe Harris was cashing in. I did enjoy ‘Lambs’ but again ‘Manhunter’ is a killer flick.

I haven’t actually read any of the books (I’m ridiculous when it comes to reading fiction), but I think there was a certain vibe with Manhunter that is missing from the other films. Maybe it’s Hopkins? I don’t know.

I tried one after ‘Lambs’ and that was the end for me.

I think that was Hannibal? I don’t remember too much of it.

I liked the mood and soundtrack. Cox’s performance I wasn’t as wowed by as you. I didn’t find him as memorable as Anthony Hopkins’ Lecter, though I guess Cox was more restrained and subtle which is good too. Interesting you think he totally embodies the character and I probably didn’t give Cox enough credit on first watch.

I enjoyed Hopkins performance. I just felt Brian’s was more grounded and real. Plus his was the first I saw. I was totaly taken in. The only reference I had was from the book. There was no “you gotta see Brian Cox” hype. The move was under the radar at the time.
I remember Alec Guiness talking about different choices for characters and comparing his style to Olivier. He said something like ‘Some people like a simple pencil drawing and others like a lot of color”. I liked that observation. Thanks for chiming in. I’m due over at your place in a bit.
