Album : T Bone Burnett – T Bone Burnett

This album was an instant CB fave. I can’t remember how I came across it but I’m still trying to wear it out and I can’t. The simplicity, understated playing. The vocals, lyrics, Jerry Douglas’s dobro and lap steel, David Hidalgo’s guitar and accordion and Byron Berline’s fiddle are standout work on this record. I’ve always liked a little country and bluegrass in my music mix. This has lots of that plus a little Band /Dylan ‘Basements Tapes’ vibe in the mix.

‘Shake Yourself Loose’, ‘No Love At All’ (I find myself singing this to myself quite a bit), ‘Oh No Darling’ are just a few highlights from an album that doesn’t have a week song. Burnett’s lyrics do it for me. I just get lost in these songs. Beautiful songs with just the right musical touch. Berlin’s touch is all over it and that is just fine with me. Man do I like his playing.

If you only know T Bone from his production of other peoples’ work and like it, try some of his own work, I think you’ll like it. This is some very good American rural music drawn from all those far reaching influences. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of T-Bone.

Someone said don’t repeat yourself. CB says bullshit. I could listen to a whole bunch of this stuff. I pull this one out a lot. An absolute gem in my pile.
