This album was an instant CB fave. I can’t remember how I came across it but I’m still trying to wear it out and I can’t. The simplicity, understated playing. The vocals, lyrics, Jerry Douglas’s dobro and lap steel, David Hidalgo’s guitar and accordion and Byron Berline’s fiddle are standout work on this record. I’ve always liked a little country and bluegrass in my music mix. This has lots of that plus a little Band /Dylan ‘Basements Tapes’ vibe in the mix.
‘Shake Yourself Loose’, ‘No Love At All’ (I find myself singing this to myself quite a bit), ‘Oh No Darling’ are just a few highlights from an album that doesn’t have a week song. Burnett’s lyrics do it for me. I just get lost in these songs. Beautiful songs with just the right musical touch. Berlin’s touch is all over it and that is just fine with me. Man do I like his playing.
If you only know T Bone from his production of other peoples’ work and like it, try some of his own work, I think you’ll like it. This is some very good American rural music drawn from all those far reaching influences. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of T-Bone.
Someone said don’t repeat yourself. CB says bullshit. I could listen to a whole bunch of this stuff. I pull this one out a lot. An absolute gem in my pile.
“Guess what Darlin, guess what, you really got me messed up” CB’s type of lyrics. Have a little taste below.
I like that tune and will look for album in my streaming music service. One sometimes forgets that in addition to his impressive work as a producer, T Bone Burnett has a sizable catalog of his own albums.

Morning, CB. I just looked him up in Wikipedia. I learned that he used to be in Dylan’s band. I didn’t remember that. Also, I learned his given first name. Do you know what it is?

He’s been around. No I don’t know his given name. Is it Neil?

David Hidalgo from Los Lobos. Nice. Never occurred to me that T to the Bone had his own album. I will give this a spin on my (still) brand-spanking new car radio. I like to cruise up Rte. 93 into New Hampshire and listen to stuff. People up in the ‘Live Free or Die’ state drive like crazed maniacs so if you hit it at the right time of day, it’s like the Autobahn. I’m doing 75-80 in a 65MPH zone and people pass me like I’m standing still. Great way to listen to music at full volume.

He has a few Doc. I don’t know if i’ts pedal to the metal driving music but it sounds good to me. As far as driving, you’re ll crazy down there. Well maybe not all.

Well it doesn’t have to be Metallica. Just good music. As to crazy, yes. I think if we weren’t before we’re being driven to it on a daily basis.

Doesnt matter to me, I’m bat shit crazy anyways.
I think your buddy would like this album if he doesnt know it already. The bluegrass guy. Steve?
LikeLike
He’s the one. But Steve is all over the map too. Do you know that when I first met him back in the Stone Age he was listening to Weather Report? He turned me on to those guys. But now he plays banjo. I told him he reminds me of that kid in “Deliverance.”
LikeLiked by 1 person
This is kind of coincidental. I had a buddy turn me onto Weather Report and another buddy who looked liked the kid from Deliverance. He didn’t play the banjo. He played the trumpet.

Deliverance was a great flick. Has CB done a piece on that?

I recall you and I discussing the take. Great film.

I should get Sonny Boy to watch it. He’s a tough one to convince. But when he likes something he likes it. I think I may have told you we went to see ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ in 70MM at a local theater a year or more back. And he’s seen ‘2001’ about a million times including 70MM. He likes it so much I bought him a book on the making of it.

Those are two pretty good films he latched onto.

Someone somewhere right now is watching one of these on their phone. And utterly wasting their time.

That would be brutal and then say. “That movie sucked”

I listened and liked while driving around. But you’re right, yeah, it’s more of an introspective album. I think a couple of cuts of this on an otherwise jumpin’ album might be enough for me.

Yeah. We’ll give it a spin when I’m visiting you up in the North 40. We’ll sit on the porch and drink moonshine out of a jug. It’ll sound real purty then.

Did i ever mention that I’m a Delbert kinda guy?

I’m not surprised at all. Delbert has CB written all over him. But I searched your site and couldn’t find shit on him. You have a funny way of showing it, Monsieur.

That’s why i shook things up. I haven’t got to half the people i dig, Delbert, DeVille, Jeffreys, Ely, Forbert …you got the idea. I listened to this stuff so much i never got on the train with a lot of the bands/artists that get discussed on these pages. I wore out DM Live At Austin. ‘Sandy Beaches’ will get the single take one day and his funked up ‘You are My Sunshine’ is forever playing in my head. That’s how sick i am. ‘Shaky Ground’ come on man! When you do your best of lists, guys like DM are at the top of mine. Listen to his vocals on that duet with Bonnie. Come on man!

I don’t need to, Doc is always pulling out surprises. I’ll save some comments for your take. I’ll get to it in the next day or so. Go to bed.

Knowing your tastes a bit Pete, I think you would find some good listening in T-Bones library. I thought you and him went back to the Dylan days? I was mistaken.

Ha. I’ve been aware of him for a long time, just never dug beneath the surface. Will have to.

Yes, I like that! Of all his albums, T-Bone is by far his most mellow. His albums are usually ironic and sardonic, but this one is peaceful and calm. The arrangements are minimalistic, and the sound utterly uncluttered. It’s almost impossible to listen to this without feeling calm and peaceful.

Yes this album does it for me. The musicianship is top notch.

Know T-Bone’s name but little of his music. Same for the other gentleman. Will come back for a listen later. Cheers CB!

I first knew him for the brilliant single he did with Elvis Costello under the Coward Brothers name, ‘The People’s Limousine’ – loved that.
I had no idea this one existed CB.

He has been around and continues to get around. I don’t think he makes a bad turn unlike myself. He produces a shit load of stuff but I still like it when he does his own music.

Aye – you know this is one for me, CB. I got into T-Bone via the production work he done on some soundtracks and Raising Sand. Anyhoo, my favourite of his is The True False Identity. I think we spoke about this previously…

Yea we did. I really like this album (plus his others). I figured this would be up your alley. Obviously it’s Burnett’s album but Berline shines.
