Music Single : Steely Dan – Do It again

download (12)

Probably the first Steely Dan song I heard and the reason I wanted to hear more.  They actually played music like this on the radio (just to balance out the other stuff).

A very cool piece of music. I have heard it a zillion times and never get tired of it. Subliminally it was conditioning CB for the jazz thing. So much going on in this song . Fagan’s vocals and lyrics are so good. Steely Dan were such a good band and fulfilled their promise that this song started.

I’ve said this before but it is a cousin to Frank Zappa to my ear. The jazz thing. I love the percussion and the organ. Great guitar licks. Shit I like every thing about this cut. Just a lot of good memories around this plus it’s a very cool tune.

“You go back Jack do it again ..”. Yeah I’ve been singing that for a long time.

This got played all the time on NZ classic hits radio. It took me a while to warm to Steely Dan – they mainly played the singles from the first two albums and from Gaucho.

Along with ‘Rikki’ and ‘Reelin in the Years’ I bet. I dig ‘Reelin’ a lot also. Gaucho? It’s the one album I didn’t play as much. Maybe I’ll give it a spin. Sounds like a good idea.

Gaucho has some good stuff – it’s a step down from the first six, but Babylon Sisters and Hey Nineteen are good singles. Title track that rips off Keith Jarrett is my favourite.

Listening to it right now. It’s all coming back. Perfect listening for today. Thanks.
I didn’t know about the Jarrett thing. Crazy. I love the sax on that cut.

Yeah, another band the Doc loves and never ever gets tired of. Denny Dias on electric sitar. He’s a great player who also did the wild-ass first solo in “Bodhisattva.” I like your comment about how they used to play stuff like this on the radio. Yeah. Cut forward a few years and they were playing ‘Aja’ on the radio with a drum/sax solo for the ages. Imagine that making it today. Not a chance. We should treasure our Steely Dan albums. You will never see a band like this again.

I turned off the radio years ago (maybe in the car but I just end up swearing at the thing). When bands like Steely Dan came on the airwaves it was like “What the hell is that”. Yeah SD is a CB fave. And you’re right, unique.

Satellite has somewhat saved the day. They kinda don’t get it entirely right but it’s an oasis compared to either the taking over of “classic rock” radio by headbanging music and Top 40 by “I don’t know how to describe it.” Watch for a post on the latter.

Until you turned me onto Spotify (it is my radio station) I just didn’t tune in anymore.
That will be an interesting take for sure.

I also listen to Pandora which I’d almost forgotten about. Don’t know if you listen to that but that’s more channel-oriented. SiriusXM just bought them.

No I don’t listen. I’m pretty content with what I have happening.

I’m listening to that ‘Spectrum Road’ that John T recommended. Digging it. Good chili making music.

BTW, not to beat the dead horse in regards to Spotify, but have you ever searched for either Release Radar or Discover Weekly when you’re using it? Some good, tailored results.

No I havent. But I’ll look into it. I’m still blown away by it. I get to tailor my own stuff. That little DJ that works there does a good job on knowing CB’s style.

If I recall it correctly, “Do It Again” also was my intro to Steely Dan. As you know, I dig these guys big time, so great choice!

Some of our common ground. I’m listening to ‘Gaucho’ (courtesy of Aphoristical) as i catch up on things.

Great album, from which I dig “Babylon Sisters” and “Hey Nineteen” in particular.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker went through a real ordeal to record “Gaucho.” I think these challenges largely contributed to their extended break thereafter.

Just listened to it. Went and did a little research after and yes quite the ordeal to make a record. I didnt know any of the history. I was just looking for the sax player(s).

        I guess I tend to be a bit of a music nerd🤓

Ultimately, the background story is of lesser importance. It’s really the music that counts – and the musicians. Becker and Fagen always surrounds with top-notch instrumentalists.

I used to be more into the other stuff but now it pretty much is about the music. Plus when cds first came out all the info was just to hard to read.
A lot of the making of the music does interest me if I spend the time, documentaries, books etc as long as they stick with the music and stay away from the gossip shit.
That sax player I was looking for on Gaucho was Tom Scott who I like.

Perfect tune. Doesn’t matter how many times I’ve heard it or what mood I’m in. I listen.
