Well I started this CB business to let folks know about music that moves me. Well this tune does that. I’m not a big musical film guy but I love this tune. It’s a big production with the full blown orchestra treatment. The lyrics and Harv’s delivery get me every time. Harve sings it like he’s living it. I believe him. Again CB is showing his romantic side.
Oh yeah, the song is from the film ‘Paint Your Wagon’. I saw this film when I was a kid because it had Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin in it (They both do a song. Marvin’s I really liked). Somewhere in the film Harve’s character, Rotten Luck Willie, busts out with this song and it absolutely got me. The next time I heard of Harve Prensell he showed up in the movie Fargo.
The song never pushed me towards more musicals but it certainly stayed with me all these years. I love it and it still stirs something inside me. Belt it out Harve!
‘Now I’m lost so gol derned lost not even God can find me”. What a great lyric.
Have a listen to Sam Cooke’s version, it’s beautiful.

I have and you’re right, it’s beautiful. I have Sam waiting in the wings somewhere here. Time I busted him out.
I’ll be over this week to grab a listen. I had Marcia Griffiths spinning recently. Thanks for that.

Man, I haven’t thought of or read about this guy in a zillion years. I think he may have been in a Broadway production of The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Anyway, have a terrific day!

I knew absolutely nothing about him. Just this song and then like I said he turned up in Fargo. He had a presence in both except he didn’t bust out a song in Fargo. I would have liked that, something like “I’m freezing my ass off up here in Minnesota”

Wow, there’s an out-of-left-field choice from CB. I like it. I’m a big musical guy so I like these overblown numbers. Check out ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ sometime. It’s kind of inappropriate these days (if not then) but it’s filled with these lusty, macho guys belting out tunes plus great dancing.

Hey I don’t play favorites ( I guess I do). My ear guides me. This is just a good song, sung with emotion by old Harv.
Over the years some of these songs stick. I love that ‘Lonesome Polecat’ song from ‘7 Brides ..’
I am now awaiting a ME ‘Best Musical’ songs take. Can you say ‘River City’

I’ve actually been planning that for some time. Not one of the very next ones but soon.

I might pick up some new obscure tunes.

Maybe not so obscure perhaps, just unknown to Monsieur Babyhead.

Kings! I wasn’t expecting this one, CB. Great pick. I’m not big keen on musicals, but back in the day they made a helluvalotta good yins.

Not my cup of tea(or film) but this song just struck a cord. People kicked the shit out of the film but I didn’t mind it.

I’ve seen it a couple of times when I was younger. For a musical, it’s a good yin, but I would have loved to have seen a gritty, dusty, version.

Total cash in by the studio to capitalize on Marvin and Eastwood’s popularity. It was the film that sent Clint into making his own films. He was blown away by all the waste and budget overruns. “I can fucking do better than that”. Kinda paraphrasing old Clint.

I think that’s fairly accurate – the actual quote being: “fuck this nonsense, I can fucking do better than that”.

No kidding. Well put. Total out of left field for me.

Man, I like your style, CB. Putting this thing out there along with Jimi. You’re almost as schizo as me!
Those old musicals have some great music, going back to “42nd Street.” The more I watch TCM, the more I appreciate that stuff.

Yeah something about this number stirs me.
“Almost” is the key word.
TCM does a good job across the board.

While admittedly it’s not my cup of tea, I like that you’re so passionate about the tune. When music grabs you that way, it’s a beautiful thing!

Yeah the song kinda picked me. You know how much I like film, but the thing is I never got into the musical thing. This was a total out of left field.

Ultimately, I think that’s all that matters. If it touches you, who cares about the genre or whether it’s out of left field.

I have to find out more about that. I would get a kick out of hit. The people who call themselves my kids are always getting me to watch clips of those Simpson people and always get a good chuckle. You have me real curious.

You keep my Simpsons streak going. That is funny especially Bart and Homer’s expectations. That was CB back in the day. I’ll have to watch it again (not the movie). Thanks for that.
