This is another record CB found in his brothers record pile and he listened to it a lot. Along with the other great albums I found in that pile it set the tone for what I would listen to in the future.
I’d heard some of these cuts already off of ‘Are You Experienced’, The hard rock riffs on ‘Purple Haze’. The out and out rocker ‘Fire’ Hendrix style . Loved the drums on this one. ‘Wind Cries Mary’ is just a cool tune with some good vocals from Hendrix. Picture a pre -teen white kid singing along playing air guitar with Hey Joe. There were a few more cuts off the first album.
New cuts for CB were ‘Crosstown Traffic’, what can I say, a CB style tune. ‘Red House’ is blues that Jimi nails. The album also has ‘All Along The Watchtower’ which is just fantastic.
CB liked the whole album. It was more of a taste of Jimi and the Experience, maybe more like a meal. I also liked the front and back cover of the record. The boys going western which always sits well with my love of western movies. Oh yeah there was Jimi’s guitar work which just sounded real good to me.
(Jump ahead a few decades. I have a tribute album called ‘Stone Free’ with some diverse artists. Buddy Guy does a killer version of ‘Red House’)
I love the cover of the BBC Sessions album where they all have identical afros.

Jimi Hendrix was the most brilliant guitar hero of the 60s. His “Smash Hits” should be part of every musical education.

‘Smash Hit’ does a good job. You’re right it should be part of a musical education.

The influence of Jimi Hendrix in rock history was enormous, when considering that only four studioalbums were published during his lifetime.

I liked that power trio thing.

When they released “Are You Experienced” in the States, the geniuses at the record label left ‘Red House’ off, figuring nobody here dug the blues. Wikipedia: “In fact Hendrix later questioned the choice and commented “Everybody was scared to release ‘Red House’ in America because they said, ‘America don’t like the blues, man.’ What nonsense. I never heard the song till it was released a few years later on a Warners’ compilation. Maybe the greatest blues song ever recorded.

That’s what I mean Doc when I say this kind of music sets the tone. It got into me early. It’s not a argument on what’s better etc it’s a matter how much I was being moved by it. Like that Bruce/Gallagher . I’m bent to this stuff. When I heard the Buddy version of ‘Red House’ I thought you’d be on board but you’re really on board with “maybe the greatest”. Stuff never gets old.

Yeah’ “Red House” is perfect. Another one I think is at the level is Clapton’s live version of Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice” from the Dylan tribute show they did at Madison Square Garden a few years back. Can’t be improved upon.

I will be tuning that in.

Just listening to it now. Had to find another link, the one you sent didnt work. That’s the Eric I dig the most. I remember that gig. Neil Young did a version of ‘Watchtower’. Killer. Duck Dunn, Cropper and Booker T backing up. What can I say the EC take sounds real good. Back to the Domino’s days.

Huh. Might be a local link that doesn’t work up in the North 40. Yeah that is some great, great stuff. The guy is towering.

Great intro comp, isn’t it?

Yup. Comps did serve a purpose.

I love this one, CB. An exceptional compilation. Definitely a great intro if anyone needs one (though mine was Are You Experienced)… and a must have in a collection for sure.

Both those albums are good ones and a good place to start with his music. Our friend ME did his “songs we get tired of”. I never get tired of these cuts and I’ve heard them a lot.
(Still trying to figure out how to send my ‘Morrison Hotel ‘take to you)

I was gonna agree, but I have tired of Foxy Lady. I just can’t hear that anymore.
(I meant to email you about Morrison Hotel… sorry. I will get to getting!)

Now I have the Foxy Lady riff in my head. One more time J for old times.
(No sweat on that Hotel thing. It will happen.)

Just one more, CB. Just one more.

“Smash Hits” surely is one hell of a compilation! I don’t know the “Stone Free” tribute, but that Buddy Guy cover you called out is killer! The Cure and Spin Doctors at least at first sight seem to be somewhat odd choices, but I haven’t heard their Hendrix renditions.

I really like the tribute. Jeff Beck and Seal do a “killer” job on ‘Manic Depression also.

Buddy Guy can do a killer version of any song!

Although like you, I had heard some of these tunes before, it did not take me long to get into this album. As an aspiring guitarist…later turned bassist…I ate up anything Jimi Hendrix played. A true genius, although I am a big fan of Jimmy Page as a guitarist, but Clapton and Hendrix are exceptional.

So many good ones from that era. Peter Green, Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck …. Jimi was in good company plus he has some vocals to go with it.

Yes, yer right, so many in those days. I greatly admired Terry Kath, of Chicago, a great player that even intimidated Hendrix!

Music Enthusiast is a big fan of Kath. Maybe you musicians have that special thing in your ear. You should check out his station you might find some common ground.

I had this one…no one could or does play guitar like Hendrix. A total original. All Along The Watchtower…when Dylan comes out and says that Jimi has the definitive version…you are doing something right. Great artist and an album that should be in any rock fan’s collection.
