Speaks his mind on music & movies!

Doc’s Summer Film Festival

images (5)

My friend Doc (Jim at Music Enthusiast) asked CB if i would throw a quick list together of films I’d recently posted to give him some choices for his viewing pleasure. Glad to do it. I’ve personalized it a bit knowing his film tastes (kind of ).

Going into the summer is such a great time to watch a film. So here are some choices just for you fella. A range of genres. What they all have in common is they are really good (in CB’s mind) and films I will or have re-watched. So get on the comfy couch, grabs some snacks (lots of them ) snuggle up with the doctors wife, hit the lights and roll em.

download (48) You like westerns, your gal likes Tommy Lee. What are you waiting for?

download (21) You saw it but can’t remember. Time to jog your memory for a great gritty film. 70’s style. Viggo is fantastic.

download (11) A great summer flick if there ever was one. An adult, intelligent Hope/Crosby romp.

download (9) Head to Australia for a really good solid film.

download (28) Come back to your neighborhood and hang with some of your people. Mitchum is a film pro.

download (11) Get back on the boat and head over to England and hang with Eddie Coyles cousin, Jack Carter. Great gangster film

download (9) Because you get political and so does this film. CB can get away from the violent stuff once in awhile. Such a good film.

download (3) I tried to stay away from the underworld films “but they keep dragging me back”. A throwback to those 70 films we love. Shannon is real good.

download (6) You just have to Doc.  It’s so good.

download-15 download (11) download (21) You have to finish up with a triple feature of these 3. A CB law. You might have to owe your better half  a night out to the next Hollywood romantic comedy. But we make sacrifices for the love of film and rock n roll.

There you have it Doc. I could have listed every film I’ve given the CB treatment. I think these will be right up your alley knowing a little bit of your movie leanings and comments you’ve dropped. The ‘Burnt Weeny Festival” is on.

A little short before you watch the feature. Another CB fave.

Ha! No one will see this CB. They’re used to you blogging on weekends. You’ve gone off-brand. Thanks for this list. I’ll start digging in. As to the cartoon, I’m ancient enough to have a vague memory of cartoons listed on the outside of my local theater and then played before Saturday matinees.

I went over old ground but did a little research and remembering of some of our talks. I want to rewatch all of these after listing them. Solid list. Note: my Gal likes these ones also so some women do dig them.
I enjoyed it. Easy. As far as the “cartoon” sometimes they were better than the feature. The one bellow gives CB a little classical education with the ‘Barber Of Seville’. Bugs gives Elmer a haircut. I would catch the odd Fields short also. Now you have to get back to me on the ones you watch and what you thought.

Ok. Don’t hold your breath for instant results. As you said it’s a summer list so it’ll take me a while. As to watching ‘Chinatown,’ yes but not first. I want to watch the ones I haven’t yet seen first. I think I may have mentioned on that Chinatown post that you and my friend Bill would have much to talk about. He is a big film noir fan and Chinatown is ‘modern’ (1970s) noir, yes?

I remember you mentioned Bill and yeah I would say ‘Chinatown’ is modern noir minus the B&W. You have until the middle of Sept to at least watch one of these. You can do it Doc.
You haven’t seen ‘In Order Of Disappearance’ Don’t forget it. It might catch you. If you do watch with subtitles. It loses something with the dub.

I see you have Polanski’s “China Town” on the list. I’ve watched the film more than three times and each time – like any masterpiece – it reveals new contours.

It really does do what you pointed out. These films are like the music i listen to. I get a urge to watch then from time to time. I can feel”Chinatown’ calling. If Doc doesn’t watch it I’ll watch it for him.

‘Chinatown’ is just one of those films. From start to finish and everything in between. Yup I guess I’ll be heading for a little won-ton soon.
How’d ‘Serpico’ hold up? Sounds like it held up good.

Serpico still works for me, I love the beginning bit where he comes up through the ranks and is living in Greenwich Village.

The extended version has Bugs growing a plant on Elmer’s head. It’s a good one. I can’t look at a bald head without ‘Seville’ playing in my mind.

Hope and Crosby would have crushed The Man who would be King. A copy must certainly exist in an alternate reality Amazon site. I’ll keep an eye out.

All ready watching it. Just before Hope gets his head cut off he makes a crack that if this doesn’t get him an oscar he’s going to get a new agent. Then he looks up at the native holding the axe and says, maybe I should get a new one anyway.

You’re absolutely right. Bob and Bing would have crushed it. Truth be known Connery and Caine watched a Hope/Crosby marathon to prepare.

That’s the kind of film festival I’d be heading out for! Some great picks in there… and some of my favourite flicks (Three Burials, High Plains Drifter, and The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly).

I could have went all western on him. Actually there is a western called ‘Doc’ with Stacey Keach and Faye Dunaway. I might have to do a take on that one day. It’s an under the radar movie that I really liked.
I hope he gives ‘3 Burials’ a watch. He hasn’t seen that one.

I’ll have to look up Doc, cause I don’t think I’ve seen that. If he only watches one, I would encourage him to go for 3 Burials… that’s just one of those special kind of movies.

I think he’ll pull the trigger on ‘Burials’. Having Levon Helm in it gives him the music angle.
Keach did some really good films (Fat City being a killer) when he first showed up. You’re a duster guy so i think you’ll like it. ‘Doc’ being Doc Holiday.

‘King’ is just a good flick to get lost in. Does it’s job by taking you into the story. I’m glad the rewatch worked. I think I’m going to watch it AGAIN.

There is a lot I like on this list. I just finished watching The Italian Job with Caine not too long ago. Really enjoyed it so I downloaded Get Carter but I haven’t gotten to it yet.

Mars this is a real good film. Italian Job is worth a watch but ‘Get Carter’ is a stone cold killer film. Caine is fabulous and real mean.
