Movie : Snap Review – Rocknrolla

download (8)

Couple of mid level criminals go to a local mobster to help them with a deal they’re working on. The mobster fucks them in the deal because “They need a little lesson” . Lenny the mobster is working on his own deal with a Russian bad ass so he had no time to be Mr Nice guy. Not that he’s even close to being a “nice guy”. We follow our two heroes and their other buddy as they get involved in Lenny’s business using inside information to rip him off. This is just one of the threads of many that have a bunch of criminals double dealing, stealing and chasing each other around trying to get rich and be the top dog. It’s a wild ride and you have to be on your toes to keep up.

An English crime/gangster movie with the usual violence that goes with the life style. No good guys but lots of criminals, dumb bastards, good music, editing, direction, characters, performances, writing and  humor. CB loved Ritchie’s style. He has lots of story lines going on and manages to keep the shit storm together and making sense. Lots of laugh out louds. It comes across to CB like an Elmore Leonard book with an English twist.

Black humor with twists and turns that kept CB engaged and entertained. Good flick. Did I say it has a really good soundtrack?

This sounds awfully familiar but I don’t recall seeing it. Guy Ritchie has made a couple of good flicks as I recall. (As well as having once upon a time been Mr. Madonna.)

I like his first films a lot. Lost track of his work but this was a good watch for CB.

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is another good one. He moved on to more commercial stuff later.

It’s funny how that moving on to do more commercial things usually leaves CB in the dust similar to your Framton take.

Is it CB’s contention that “commercial = bad?”

No not at all. I’ve watched (and listened) a lot of films but you know as well as I do that when the machine gets behind something and pushes people to “must see” you have 90 year old grandmothers going to see ‘The Avengers’.
For me it’s to my liking or not. ‘Jaws’ yes, I couldn’t tell you the last big commercial film I watched. It’s called “I’ve seen a few and couldn’t make it through”. Numerous piss breaks, dozing off. Just a fact Doc. So I go else where for my viewing pleasure. Like this film. I looked at Guy’s resume. He’s doing an Alladin film. See you there.

Well said. Lots and lots of crapola. And like you said, the machine lumbers out and helps behind the scenes. Yesterday was “Star Wars Day.” Anybody really think the fans came up with this idea? Or did the Disney marketing machine crank this one up? Aladdin should be great but CB is buying the popcorn.

I never seen ‘SW’ when it first came around. I took the kids when they were young when it was re-marketed. Not my bag but I will say, the look of awe on a 5 year olds face taking in what was on the big screen was a very cool thing for a dad to see. Plus it emptied my wallet a Christmas time.
Alladin and Rocknrolla? Doesn’t make sense but hey I’ll meet you there.

We’ve seen all of them. Frankly, I liked the first three but I wasn’t over-the-top nuts about them. But once we’d seen the first three, we felt some sort of stupid “commitment” to see the rest. Not sure how far we need to take that any more. Aladdin, Rocknrolla and Smokey and the Bandit

Next time you feel some kind of “stupid commitment” to watch any of those type films resist and do yourself a favor and watch a film like Rocknrolla or a CB movie if he ever gets off his ass and makes one.

The Doc requests a favor of the CB. CB has recommended a number of movies. But the Doc doesn’t know which ones to watch first. What if CB made a list of, say, the Top Five (or Ten) films to watch out of, say, his most recent choices. (Six months back?) No promises I’d watch ’em all soon as I prioritize playing guitar and blogging these days. But I’d watch some of ’em for sure. Maybe make it a different post and you might get the notice of some of the other riff-raff who follow you. As to a movie CB could make, has there ever been a Sophie Tucker biopic? You’re welcome.

On November 4, 1963 The Beatles performed as the 7th act at the Queen’s Royal Variety Performance. That was the show where John Lennon uttered his famous “Those in the cheap seats clap your hands, the rest of you can just rattle your jewelry” remark to the royals.

McCartney introduced the next song, “Till There Was You” from the play The Music Man, as having also been “recorded by our favorite American group, Sophie Tucker”—an apparent joke about her size, something Tucker often joked about herself.

I’ve heard the name but you have educated CB the ignoramus again. Maybe I’ll work her into a western. Those quotes are funny.

How about a remake of ‘My Little Chickadee?’ Find somebody up there in frozen tundra-ville to play Sophie, CB plays Bill Fields

Man, this movie sounds great. I don’t think I ever heard of it before. While I read your review, for some reason I started thinking about The Long Good Friday. That’s a movie I’ve meant to watch again. Anyway, see you later!

It’s a little violent Neil but hey they’re gangsters. There is so much more going on. Lots of good humor.
Long Good Friday will get the CB treatment. Great flick. Early British classic. How about that other Hoskins gangster flick, ‘Mona Lisa’? Rocknrolla slides into comedy but it’s a good slide.

I liked this one… never actually thought about the Elmore Leonard thing before, but I can see the similarities. A cross between Leonard and Tarantino, maybe? Certainly considered the English Tarantino by some, though I think that was more to do with the violence in his flicks, as he had a bit to go before he was in QT’s league.

Anyhoo, this gets the thumbs up by default due to big Gerry being in it (I actually got around to watching Den of Thieves finally… have you seen it? Worth a watch, I think).

Hey J. I’m just spending a few minutes in front of the box and caught your comment. Yeah, I’m a huge Elmore guy. His characters are never on the up and up just like this film. No ones squeaky clean. This film just keeps moving. Was worth a watch for me. Some laughs for sure. When the Russian bad guys were chasing Gerard and wouldn’t give up. I love that stuff.
Have not seen ‘Den Of Thieves’ but noted. I fell of the QT horse quite a while ago but yeah his earlier stuff was good.

I love Elmore. Have I asked you before about your thoughts on Justified? We have discussed that, right? No? Man, we should.

Den of Thieves is good entertainment. Big Gerry is great (have I told you I like big Gerry?). QT is still one of my favourite movie makers… Django aside, I’d recommend his last few flicks… Hateful Eight might be my favourite.

Yes we have talked ‘Justified’. For me J i have a hard time bracketing time for the series. On the rare occasion I catch one (‘The Bridge’, ‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Saul”). I have ‘Justified on the watch list along with a few others.
I remember seeing ‘Reservoir Dogs’ at a film festival and half the people walked out.

Same here. I am very selective about what I sit down to TV wise – hence why I’ve miss a lot of the shows. Justified is worth it if you find the time. Speaking of TV, I don’t actually have anything I’m watching just now, so I’m thinking I’m gonna revisit Deadwood prior to the movie.

Seems incredible to think that people walked out of Reservoir Dogs. Quite the movie. I remember getting a poor quality video of it back in the day and I watched and watched it before finally getting a proper copy when it was released.

I’m not much of a Guy Ritchie fan outside of Lock Stock. I’ll give this one a try since it got the CB seal of approval.
