Movie : Snap Review – In Order Of Disappearance

A Norwegian (really a Swede), Nils Dickman, snowplow driver is being awarded “The Citizen of the Year Award” for keeping a stretch of nearly impassable highway open. At the same time his son is being murdered by a drug gang in a case of mistaken identity. Nils can’t buy the idea that his son died of an overdose and was a closet junkie. His world is turned upside down. He goes on a revenge jag to make whoever killed his son pay the debt. ‘Citizen of the Year’ becomes Dirty Harry or Dirty Nils Dickman.

I love Scandinavian films and this one out of Norway continues that big love. It was on my radar for a long time and when I pulled the trigger to watch it I was really glad I did. This is a crime film in the style of ‘Fargo’, ‘Reservoir Dogs’, ‘Big Lebowski’ set in Norway in the middle of winter. Stellan Skarsgard (a CB fave) is Nils and he is absolutely fantastic in the role. Perfect casting along with all the other actors. There are various characters and they all bring something to the making of this movie. Hans Peter Moland directs a keeps it focused and on track. The cinematography is beautiful.

This is dark humor not over played and it had me laughing out loud in lots of places. I chose to watch it with subtitles (I always do. Dubbing only works for me in Spaghetti Western). I mentioned the comparable films. Don’t be mistaken this movie stands alone and I absolutely loved it. The lesson in this one is,  do not fuck with the citizen of the year, he will get real violent.

(The late Bruno Ganz is in the film. Always a good thing)

The thing about Scandinavian films is it always seems bleak and cold, even in summer. I like this stuff too. I’ll see if I can chase it down. Not familiar with it.

I think you might like this one Doc. It’s cold (winter setting) but the cinematography isn’t gloomy. Actually it beautifully shot. It’s darkly funny and Skarsgard is the every-man type which works. Lots of great supporting characters and dry subtle humor.

CB, your essays make me realize how many movies I haven’t seen. I’ll keep this one in mind.

There’s a movie out now called Gloria Bell. Save your money. I liked it less and less as it went on.

    See ya!

Like the music side of things I have some good feelers out for catching these kinds of flicks (Yeah Another Blogger is a good source). I know you’don’t like too much violence but if you liked the Coen’s ‘Fargo’ it’s a pretty good comparison as far as style with this film. I really liked this one a lot.
I’ll have a look at the trailer for ‘Gloria Bell’ and keep your words in mind. Never heard of it. Watched a good doc on Harry Dean Stanton last night. I’ve seen him in so many films. One of those old school actors.

I’ll watch for it, CB. Sounds intriguing. Have you seen “The Great Silence”? A Spaghetti Western set in the snow. Not much of a plot, but a good (interracial) love scene, and the presence of maniac Klaus Kinski makes it enjoyable.

It really is a good film Pete. Not everyone’s’ bag but I sure liked it (so did my gal).
Yes I’ve seen ‘Silence” I ate all that stuff up after the Leone films. Klaus was a certified card carrying nut job.

Never heard of this one, CB. I’m definitely interested, though… I like a good revenge flick.

Oh yeah J, I would highly recommend this with the subtitles. I like it with the original dialogue. A good bent movie. You might find yourself having a few laughs at this one. Skarsgard is a beauty. It is a total “revenge” movie with an unlikely guy doing it and doing it well. Hey we are all capable of a little violence.

There’s not a bad Skarsgard performance, eh? Certainly not that I’ve seen. I’ve added this to the list and hoping I get to see it soon(ish).
