Here’s a cut that always puts CB in a good mood. I heard it at a time in my life I will always associate with this song. A great violin lick by Lisa Germano along with John Cascella’s squeezebox just make this song a feel good, grab your sweety and start to cut a rug kind of tune. Just get up and let it take you for a ride.
Mellencamp is backed by Crystal Taliefero on vocals and she adds just the right touch and feel for the song. The tune takes you on a little nostalgic trip. Lyrics conjuring up some great images for me. I just want to grab my Gal and dance with her. John knows how to spin a tune and he spins a good one here.
So be careful if this song comes on I just might grab ya for a little spin.
“And groovin was groovin”. I love that line.
(I have a friend who self proclaims is one of the top 5 accordion players where I live. Who am I to doubt him)

Quality easy going track with that “country life in the heartland of America” style that John Mellencamp often depicts in his songs.

“Easy going”. I like that. Perfect.

I like the song. Some folks say he’s a poor man’s Springsteen, but Mellencamp’s mid 80s work is pretty great.

People love to throw labels on things. I betcha that comparison makes Mellencamp real happy. I’ve been hanging with him since his Cougar days at the beginning. Loved those albums. I need to catch up with his later stuff ( in the process). He makes good music.

The song is doing it’s job with you. I love the accordion and violin touches. I think I said that already.

Yeah, a terrific song. Always liked John a lot. Saw him circa 1980 in a small club when he was going by John Cougar.

Like I commented to someone else, I liked his John Cougar output. I seen him early on also. He must have been pissed off at the promoter or venue because he wasn’t into it. Didn’t stop me from being a fan. At least he wasn’t wasted like Lou Reed was when I first saw him. Again it didn’t stop me from being a fan.

Man, this is probably the best Mellencamp song I’ve heard. He’s no slouch, from what I can tell, but this is great.

Yeah old John cuts some good ones. This is a feel good tune for me. Good lyrics, story backed by some very good playing. I’m slowly starting to get into his latest recordings. I lost touch. I see he did a record with T Bone Burnett. That has my attention.

T Bone Burnett is right up there as one of my favourites. Alongside Joe Henry, He’s a dude that knows how records should sound.

I’ve been listening to Joe (mostly the Joe/Billy Railroad tunes). I’ll put some more on the spin cycle tomorrow. You’ve prompted me to do a take on T-Bone. I’ve had it on the radar for a while.

That Joe & Billy album is a good yin, eh? I really dig T-Bone’s The True False Identity, but I checked out the earlier stuff following one of our earlier discussions. Very much dig what he did and does.

Listening to ‘Tiny Voices’ right now. He used “cherry bomb” in his lyric. Funny huh?

Ha! So he does. Timing, eh?
I tell you what, I love that lyric and especially the delivery. Just incredible stuff.

great combo of words and music. Like his use of smokey horns.

Aye, smokey horns and staggering piano. He’s up there with the best of them, for sure.

Mellencamp: overrated, underrated or properly rated? I say underrated.

Again we agree. I’m sure he’s made lots of dough. All I know is that he makes quality music and seems to have no end to musical ideas. As I get older I want to hear the music and less talk about it from these guys. John (and others) are outspoken which is not a bad idea but CB has a short attention span.

Mellencamp isn’t the poor man’s Springsteen. That would be Seger. 🙂 I like this tune, like Mellencamp but he’s a “radio guy” for me. So I’ll listen to him on the radio sometimes and that’s pretty much it. Never rose to “must have” for me. “Pink Houses” is another good one.

I can see how the “radio guy’ thing would happen. He was all over it for a long time. Yeah “Pink Houses’ is a good tune. More of an album guy for me.
I never completely stopped listening to the radio but I did cut way back. The content and commercials were too much. I’m loving Spotify as you know. The radio station I always dreamed of.

I try and try to get some of my music-loving peers to listen to it but they just shrug. I don’t get it.

Like I’ve said to you before. It’s unbelievably good. Maybe they think it’s some kind of conspiracy thing. I don’t get it either.

I think they think it’s too technical or something. I’m gonna set my friend Steve up on it net time I’m in Philly whether he wants it or not.

As you know, I dig Mellencamp, and that tune is right up my alley. In fact, the album on which it appeared, The Lonesome Jubilee, is one of my all-time favorite Mellencamp records.
It strikes a great balance between the earlier, more straight rock-oriented and the roots-focused Mellencamp. In fact, it was his first record to start his gradual transition into Americana/roots-oriented music.
I’m still weighing to see him again this year. At the same time, I already got tickets for the Stones, The Who and a dynamite looking Pink Floyd tribute band called Brit Floyd. I’m also planning to catch Walter Tout at the Iridium in NYC in April.
With ticket prices the way they are nowadays, it’s simply impossible to see everybody – sigh!

He makes real strong albums and ‘Jubilee’ is one of them, I agree. He has so many good songs. I absolutely love ‘Lonesome Old Town’ off of ‘Scarecrow’ which is another very good record.
You have your concert dance card filled up. Good for you. I’ll see you at the Who/Trout gigs.

They get lost in the shuffle because of his big eighties albums. My sister had those and I like them.
