This music grabbed me right away. It was like a rock n roll attack. Hard driving music. I’ve always liked hard, loud rock and Pearl Jam gave me a load of it. This first album doesn’t waste any time getting to it. Music with a big sound.
I could have picked any of the first few albums by PJ but why not the one I heard first. CB already had lots of tunes to listen to but when a band with music like this explodes onto the map I was taken in. Lots of great guitar, solid rhythm section and a perfect voice for their sound. These guys are solid and brought their sound to the music world. I love the build and release with the guitar solos and Vedder’s vocals. another guy who substitutes moans, screams and wails for lyrics. He’s feeling something.
There isn’t one cut on the album that didn’t do it for me. They pull out a song like ‘Black’, slow it down but you can feel the energy in the band, it wants to bust out. This music has power, energy and emotion to it. They even throw in a story song ( CB went to school with a kid who bit people at recess). Great tune. Great band, great album.
Lots of things I like about this band but the big thing for me is they rock hard. Don’t know where they draw their influences from but they pull them together to make their own music. They fit in nicely in my music pile.
Black from this album is an all-time favorite, still amazes me wasn’t a single! Jeremy I find overrated. Vedder’s vocal is one-of-a-kind and as you say, he’s feeling something.

I had ‘Black’ pegged for the song to feature. It is a very good tune. Like Vedder, Fogerty, Springsteen do a lot of that wailing. I love it

We’ve had this conversation before, but great songs on the first side, but I don’t really like the arena rock production. My favourite era is around Vitalogy and No Code where Vedder took over more, and made them more punk and more eclectic.

It was a toss up with ‘Vitalogy and ‘Vs’ as to the one I was going to feature. I wanted to stick to my initial feel to the band and the music. I listened to those first 3 albums a lot. They have evolved and I do like their “eclectic” sound.

Nowadays, I’m more inclined to listen to Vedder’s solo Into The Wild soundtrack. Reminds me of Paul Westerberg sometimes.

Yes I like that one also (my son turned me onto it).
I think you keep more current with the music we find common ground with. I seem to be more familiar with the earlier output where you seem to run the gamut and know the later recordings more than I do.

I don’t know any Pearl Jam-related stuff past about 2010 actually. Normally I concentrate on the first ten years or so, but I heard that album on a car trip and enjoyed it. It’s one of my wife’s favourites too.

I haven’t seen the flick but I did see a doc on the real guy. Sad stuff.
I generally get hooked at the start, fade and try to play catch up or check in from time to time. Just soooo much music out there to experience.

I saw them back then, but the LP never grabbed me at all. My dad is a massive PJ fan, if that helps.

Yes that helps. Thanks.

I loved this album when I heard it… must have been around 95 or so. Made a big impression on me, but I don’t listen to it much at all anymore (last time being a good 10 year ago, I reckon).
I do like the live versions of some of the cuts, though…

Yeah I don’t listen to it as much either. I usually reach for other albums by PJ. But this one did get my attention and I have a soft spot for it, You (and Tony) would probably know more about their impact than I would i just dug that bands were creating new music that had some guts.

They were a huge band for me, though it’s been about 15 years since I was excited about anything (that said, I really liked last year’s single a whole lot – I think I’m among the few!). Still, as you say, they stirred all their influences together in a big bowl and created something different.

So much music but I still dip into PJ when I get the urge.
(I finally got access to your site again. I’ll keep an eye on it)

I know what you mean. I still listen to the run from Vs. to Yield a fair bit, but there’s so much stuff out there. Music like theirs, Afghan Whigs, Beck, and Screaming Trees are like resets for me. Stuff I go to when I need levelled after a run of new stuff. I can trust it, y’know.
(You can find me here now: http://vinyldaftdad.wordpress.com. Decided to be a wee bit more focused).

That was quite an explosion with Nirvana, Perl Jam and Soundgarden

Yes. You’ve talked about music hitting a wall and not of a lot of new sounds being explored. I agree. I think at this time these bands found something fresh. Another band from this group, Mudhoney hooked up for an EP with Jimmie Dale Gilmore (a CB fave). Two musical worlds collide and make good music together. Check this out if you have if you have 4 and 1/2 minutes.

Love JDG. Will for sure check that out.

I seen JDG’s buddy Butch Hancock with Richard Lloyd (Television) in concert. Very good show. Another meeting of musical minds that worked for me.
I think it’s so cool when people I like get together and make music. Makes me feel like I’m on some kind of right track. If that makes sense.

All with big guitars, great songs and great vocalists. The reinvention of Classic Rock.

You just add to my point. Hard rock with their twist.

Tony in the UK is a massive and knowledgeable PJ fan and did a nice series on them. He put together a nice Spotify list that I need to crib.

Yeah I read his series. He’s a serious fan. He picked a good band. He’s like you, knows all the nuts and bolts of the band.

He went deep. I didn’t know half that shit. I like PJ but I’m not a massive fan.

What I mean’t was you go in depth with your takes also. You use laser surgery. CB is a sawbones in his operations.

Oh yeah I got what you meant 100%. I was saying I don’t know anything about Pearl Jam specifically over and above a documentary I once saw.

Pearl Jam definitely looks like a band I should know more about than I do. Sometimes I feel the older I get, the more I seem to get stuck in the ‘60s and ‘70s!

Christian there is just so much good music. It’s about choices and giving time to it. Seems to me you have a pretty eclectic taste and listen to lots of various bands. I have my old go to bands but I do branch out. PJ came along at the right time for me. Hard Rock for a lack of a better label. They also explore ideas in that genre. I think any of the first few albums would give you an idea of what they are about. Good solid band.
