Quick Hit : The Tragically Hip – Road Apples

download (21)

The Tragically Hip were a band that caught my ear with their ‘Up To Here’ album. I devoured that one. So I anticipated Road Apples to see if they could follow it up. I wasn’t disappointed. I got what I wanted and more. They kick the album off with a great rocker ‘Little Bones’. These guys rock hard and have their own sound. Gord’s vocals are perfect and his lyrics conjure up vivid images.

TH are a tight band that changes things up. They can get into slower grooves. They write good songs backed by great music, Rock n roll Hip style. They’re good. Some real good rockers on this record. The reason I came back for more. It always helps to have a great lead singer who writes good words and has passion. The guitar attack is great and drums and bass lay down a real solid back bone.

This album never gets old with me. All their work is solid and I could have featured anyone of their records but I chose ‘Road Apples because it had an impact and made me a forever fan. You knew they would keep pumping out quality music. A Canadian bar band that did good similar to their cousins The Band.

The Tragically Hip really do have their own sound and I dig it. Not a weak cut on this really good record.

Despite all the good press from blog-mates, I’m yet to listen to the TH. Must remedy that as a NY resolution!

Bruce. That’s the quickest hit CB has ever got. I usually post the take and hit the hay.
Yeah I’ve been listening to the boys from close to the start. Good solid band with a truckload of integrity. Far away from that music that shall remain nameless ( initials PR and rhymes with frog talk) that we like . This might be a good place to start for your NY resolution.

Send some of that sunshine our way it’s wet as hell up here. Later fella.

That guy Gord who passed away, geez, Canada acted like the guy was the King or something. Even the prime minister mentioned him. What’s up with that?

I guess people want to hang their hats on a feel good story. The media really got behind them ( even anti social/media CB heard it). Falda and her guy went to the farewell concert.
What’s up with that politician thing? That’s what they all do. Jump on any band wagon they can (When we get together an uncensored CB will give you his political opinion. which is short). They all do it. I’m not an expert on TH. Bottom line again Doc is these guys rock hard, play good music and were the real thing. Out.

Road Apples was the first Hip album I listened to start to finish. Slowly started to introduce more of their music into my life and now I’m a full on fan. But yeah, to Road Apples has that Canadian Bar band feel to it more than their other records. Still my fav.

I hate picking faves but I seem to grab this one the most. Mars, I think they deserve anything good that came their way. Again they earned it by gigging in every shit hole in Canada especially Ontario. I betcha they have some cool road stories from the beginning. Love this band. Gord’s words just leave so many vivid images. Later

Hey CB. I love this album. My favourite song is Cordelia, followed by Three Pistols. It’s not my favourite TH album ( Fully Completely is) but it’s right up there. CYa

First of all, The Tragically Hip is one fucking cool name. Sadly, it’s the only thing I had known about these guys. Based on sampling some of the tunes, this album sounds awesome – yet another band I need to add to my growing list of music artists to explore!

You are right about the “cool name’. It fits because they are a cool band. I like everything about these guys. If you give them some time I think they’ll grow on you.

This is my favorite Canadian band – they rock hard and they’re original. I’m sorry I discovered them so late in the game, but the good part is that I still have more to explore. A few favorites – “Locked in the Trunk of a Car”, “Little Bones” and “At the Hundredth Meridian”.

Have you heard “Gord Downie & The Country of Miracles – The Grand Bounce” from 2010? That one is also really good.

The wonderful this about music is it’s never to late to discover new stuff. All those songs you mentioned make me want to listen to them. ‘New Orleans Is Sinking’ was the first Hip song I heard. Instant hooked.
No I havent heard the one you noted. I know it’s waiting there for me to enjoy. Thanks for the nudge. Thanks for dropping by. I’ll head over and check out your station. Sounds like my type of place.

I used to listen to several Canadian stations on SiriusXM when I had it (Iceberg was one). I was really surprised to hear how good a lot of the music was. At the same time, I was mystified why most of it is never played here in the States. I found bands like Sam Roberts, the Sheepdogs, the Arkells and Elliott Brood that way. There are lots more. None as great as the Hip, though. “New Orleans Is Sinking” was also the first Hip song I ever heard – an old buddy put it on a mix tape CD that he sent me. Wow!

I get the sense that rock music in Canada is fading from the center of things much more slowly that it did in the USA. Maybe only a Canadian could say whether that’s true or not.

The same thing happens with Australian music. A lot of it is great, but good luck hearing most of it…

Thanks for checking out the station. I expect it’s probably too heavy on americana and folk rock for you, but I only started reading your blog this afternoon, so maybe I’m wrong. I try to cover a few different styles of music, but the Neil Young/Gram Parsons thing has been part of me since I was in my early teens.

I know a couple of those bands you mentioned. Sam Roberts I like. There are so many good ones under the stuff that gets commercial airplay. Couple of my favorites are 54/40, Fred Eaglesmith ( Neil Young/Parsons vibe), Sadies, Black Mountain, Art Bergman … just off top of my head.
I’d be the wrong guy to ask about any scene. I quit listening to radio years ago. Always seemed to find good music from all over including Australia (Paul Kelly is a fave).
I’ll tune into your show (what time?) and the station. I’m all over the musical map but heavy on Americana and certain so called folk rock. I think you’ll find lots of takes from those genres on the CB page. I think I’ve done a couple Gram takes. Great early influence for you at a young age. Good talking to you and catch ya later. CB PS The Hip are great.

The station is small and it’s almost all musicians and kindred spirits like you who listen. I don’t really look for listeners, because it only costs more if I get too many people :d

The comments during the show about the tunes are what really makes it fun.
