Movie : Snap Review – Winter’s Bone

 

A teenage girl, Ree, has the responsibilities as the main caregiver dropped into her lap. A mentally ill mother, and two young siblings are depending on her to keep what little they have. Their father has skipped bail and left the family with an impending eviction. Ree tries to find out what has happened to her dad and starts to get into a bleaker world than she already knows.

I can’t remember how I got pushed to this film (just remembered. Based on a Daniel Woodrell novel. An author I like) but I was real glad I did. It had been a while since I had seen a new movie that really turned my crank. This one did that in spades. Everything I like in film is here. Truthful, honest performances. Setting and environment that totally engulfs you. Sparse, well written, raw, gritty, and uncensored. Debra Granik directs this with a sure hand and uses all the talent at her side to bring this story to life. You really get caught up in Ree’s life whether you want to or not.

Head to the Ozarks. I dare you.
