A teenage girl, Ree, has the responsibilities as the main caregiver dropped into her lap. A mentally ill mother, and two young siblings are depending on her to keep what little they have. Their father has skipped bail and left the family with an impending eviction. Ree tries to find out what has happened to her dad and starts to get into a bleaker world than she already knows.
I can’t remember how I got pushed to this film (just remembered. Based on a Daniel Woodrell novel. An author I like) but I was real glad I did. It had been a while since I had seen a new movie that really turned my crank. This one did that in spades. Everything I like in film is here. Truthful, honest performances. Setting and environment that totally engulfs you. Sparse, well written, raw, gritty, and uncensored. Debra Granik directs this with a sure hand and uses all the talent at her side to bring this story to life. You really get caught up in Ree’s life whether you want to or not.
Head to the Ozarks. I dare you.
We rented this when it was first on cable. Our first introduction to Jennifer Lawrence who was relatively unknown but getting rave reviews. Excellent movie, raw. Lawrence’s salary went way up and her roles got measurably more prominent.

I actually caught this at the theater. I’m an Indie film sort of guy. Didn’t know anyone in it or the director. As for Lawrence (she was fantastic), good for her for making some dough but I would bet that these kinds of films are behind her. I haven’t see anything else she’s made. CB stays away from Hollywood movies that are marketed with bigger budgets than it took to make ‘Bone’.

CB might like ‘American Hustle’ and ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’ Hey, did you know our Scottish friend J has shut down his site? He said he might a few posts back and it looks like he’s deleted it.

Yes I was wondering why I couldn’t access his site. Hopefully everything is cool. Maybe he will pop up with a comment. He’s a good guy with an eclectic taste in this music thing.

Yeah I forget why he said he was thinking about packing it in. Maybe too much work. But yeah, you don’t need a WP account to comment.

Hey Jim! It’s been a bit of a busy time and, well, I’m kinda back. Maybe. Deleting site might have been rash, but I managed to move stuff… so I’m definitely, kinda, back. Loads to catch up on, but I’ll drop by your gaff soon. All is good… just had to focus on stuff for a bit.

I’m still subscribed, I’ve just not been around for a while. I’ll drop by and catch up, though.
I’m at vinyldaftdad.wordpress.com now if you fancy drop by.

Well, hopefully a couple of times a month. I have some records to chat about, as well as other stuff, I’d imagine.

Good. I ask because I like to put active blogs (at least one post/week) on my blogroll. I hate to have people click on a site that’s deadwood. I had to pull a few off that were ‘live’ and then stopped producing months ago. What’s the point?

Yeah, I know what you mean. It’s kinda why I pulled the blog. I just wasn’t doing anything. But, I have a record I’m currently jotting down thoughts about.

Well you’re on the blogroll and CB has committed you (see his comment) to 14 times/week. Looking forward to that. 🙂

Still getting some hits on % Easy Pieces. Had to give J a nudge to check it out. He dug your take.

Hey, I’ll check that out. BTW, I watched a movie today that we spoke about once. I’ll check in with you on it later.

Alright, I’m going to give this a try now that it gets a CB bump. I’ve have always heard good things, but could never get past the title. Dumb reason not to watch a film but I’m immature.

I was lucky to have missed the hype (if there was any). Mars it’s just a real good independent no frills, raw and dirty film. It’s a step into another world.

I agree Winter’s Bone is good and put Lawrence on the map
Debra Granik’s latest film, Leave No Trace (2018), underwhelmed me and didn’t have the same impact, despite the universal praise from critics

Like I said on another comment, this is the only film I’ve seen her in.
Im a little hesitant on ‘Trace’. ‘Bone’ would be hard to follow up. ‘Universal praise” scares me.

Don’t let my response dissuade you. 198 of 198 critics gave it a “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes, so “Leave No Trace” (another low budget indie) must be doing something right !

I’ll have to give it a watch just on what she did with this one. Also i’ve heard some good things from some good sources. The way I look at it Chris, it has to be better that most of the films that the machine tries to get us to watch.

CB, did you catch Debra Granik’s movie from 2018? Leave No Trace. It’s really good. One of the best I saw this year. Sure as shit, she’s a very talented director.

No I haven’t. I was just commenting with Chris on it. You and I have talked a little on it a while ago.
I owe it to the director (and myself) to see how she followed up ‘Bone’

CB, as a movie guy, I have a random question – Have you ever seen ‘The Projectionist?’ Or ‘Cinema Paradiso?’

Yes I have Doc and it’s a great piece of film. Up for a re-watch soon. I have friend and it’s his favorite all time movie. What’s your take on it?

Which one? I mentioned two movies.

‘Paradiso’. I thought you were using another name for it. Just looked up the other. Interesting. Haven’t seen it. Fill me in if you can. A Dangerfield vehicle or a real film?

The real deal. I saw it a long time ago and frankly don’t recall Rodney at all. It’s a cult movie but it was a good one. Saw it in NYC.

Doc these are the kinds of movies CB gravitates to. It already has my interest way ahead of the stuff that swamps the media airways and print. Aquadude or Projectionist? Which one would CB watch? This is how I find these off beat music/movie gems. Thanks.

I hope your contacts can find it for you. That was made in the early ’70’s when they’d pretty much let you make anything.

I caught so many of these back in the day as you know. I missed a few. Interesting how it will hit me. I’m forgiving of these from the past. They usually have some kind of hook for me. I remember when Rodney went by the name Jack Roy. You have me on the hunt for this
Back to my original ? Did you see Paradiso?
LikeLike
Right. Yes, I did and I liked it quite a bit. But I haven’t seen it since it was out. I notice it’s rentable so I think I’ll give it a spin. I thought of those two movies BTW since you’re a film guy, an indie guy, plus I recall your talking about some theater where you used to see all of this stuff. So ‘Paradiso’ popped into my head and then -from some deep recess of my mind – ‘Projectionist.’ You can buy the latter at Amazon used for about 25 bucks but I’m not so sure you wanna own it. Turner Classics has a whole write-up on it but it’s not clear that they own it much less show it.

It will come on TCM. I’m patient. It might pop up on another of my sources.
I Have ‘Paradio’. It’s a beauty. That whole life around the theater is so cool. Similar to the Last Picture Show.
The place I went to when a teen was called ‘City Nights’. Right in skid row. Bring your own bottle, bag of dope and catcha double feature for a couple bucks, of off the beaten track films. I seen some really strange films. Where I caught films like ‘Last Detail’ and the like. The place was a sit hole of shit holes. Sit in a seat and sometimes you fall right through it to the floor.

Ah, the good old days. I saw a lot of flicks in Times Square (not necessarily porno) back in the sleazy, pre-family friendly era of the ’70’s.

I’m a big fan of this flick. Saw it a while back… grim, but utterly brilliant. John Hawkes was brilliant as the bad uncle. A right fucker, but kinda good.

Me too. I’ve sent a few people it’s way and the majority come away being moved by it. Hawkes is very good in it.

I’ve never seen Deadwood. I guess I should indulge in it. Lots of good people in it. Is it based on Pete Dexter’s book Deadwood (a fave of mine)?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh man, you should indulge. I love it. Best slice of telly I’ve ever seen. I honestly never seen anything better. Everything about it was just perfect – the setting, the cast, characters, the writing… so good.
As for the book, I’ve never read it, but I know there were some questions about that at the time and Milch said he’d never read it.

Dexter is on of my favorite authors. They made a real good flick out of his book ‘Paris Trout’ Highly recommended.
