CB loves an adventure movie. He got his fill in this one. Two Rouge characters, fantastic scenery, and a story that took his imagination. John Huston (a CB a fave director) puts it all together in this old school throwback film. Good writing, perfect locations and casting the perfect two actors  amidst the local color. You really get taken away in this. Sean Connery and Michael Caine team up as the two likable scoundrels. You buy their relationship and friendship. It’s like this country is their personal playground and they treat it like that. The dialogue between the two is good and very funny.

This is an old fashioned adventure adapted from a Rudyard Kipling ( Christopher Plummer puts in a nice job as Kipling) story. It’s light but the actors are committed and play it for real which helps sell it. Connery and Caine are wonderful. I always like it when actors play below their IQ. They both do it here.

Get swept up in this fun adventure film. Beautifully shot and brought to life by Huston, his crew and some very fine performances. They prove that any one can be king or queen.

I can’t give you any more than that. It has probably been thirty years or more since I last saw TMWWBK, I just somehow latched onto that line.

That is so cool that a line from the film has stayed with you that long. There are so many in this film.
I did some fast detective work and found that line. When Peachy and Danny are exposed and they’re running for their lives. Good one tref. I will now use that when I’m leaving the supermarket with my Gal. “Brass it out Danny .”

CB, I don’t know how I missed this one, but I did. From your review, I know I’d like it. Caine and Connery are two of my favorite actors.

Time to correct that Neil. I always do these films from the perspective of when I first caught them. Jump ahead to today and it stands up as an entertaining night at the movies. This is on my re-watch cycle.

I recall this one being out but never saw it. Need to check and see if this is around somewhere. Two great actors, happily both still with us.

Yes you do Doc. Great combos don’t always work but the Connery/Caine Huston one does for me. Basically a Hope/Crosby road movie done a little differently.

Perfect. Sean plays it straight and sells it. Enough great dialogue in this for 10 movies. When all else fails a little “shclap” is the ticket. Right out of Connery’s play book.

Yes – these classics were so much more about the dialogue. It’s damn site more interesting than a bunch of green-screened superhero-fueled explosions. Give me a good old Huston talk fest anyday

Great cinematography with great dialogue in this one. That other stuff never reaches CB’s eyes the same as certain music doesn’t make it past my ears.

Oh yeah. Ain’t it great when chemistry works. They must have had fun on this one. Huston was not adverse to a little shenanigans. Lets you and mego and make part two Pete.

“The jig’s up!” Great flick, CB. Used to watch this one with the old boy whenever it was on TV. Stuck with me… Connery and Caine are brilliant together. The patter and how the bounce off each other… man, I could watch this right now… that’s how good it is.

(Strangely enough, I’ve been talking about Connery’s turn in The Highlander recently… the jovial Egyptian Spaniard).

Every time I hear you guys use quotes I start to laugh. There are so many and delivered by the perfect guys. I seem to be a bit of a Connery fan. You pick up on that?
I’ve never seen the ‘Highlander’ flick. Is it worth a peek?

I’m certainly tuning into some Connery fan vibes, CB… but how can anyone not be a fan of Connery?

I’m a big fan of The Highlander. I have so much love for that flick. I’m gonna recommend it, but it comes of the back of recommending it to another pal who watched and said it was very dated and the acting was horrible. Obviously he meant aside from Connery. But aye, it’s a big favourite of mine.

Sean is one of those guys who is always good no matter what he’s in. I watched ‘Orient Express’ a while back. His part (small) was by far one of the best in the film. I think he did it as a favor to Lumet.
I will bite the bullet on ‘Highlander’ when I come across it. Thanks.

If you need a guy to do a take on Highlander gimme a shout – I’ve just bought myself a copy of the DVD, as I no longer had it and all the talk about it recently has made me wonder why (I got rid of all my DVDs a few moves back to make it all easier!).

… and yeah, I know I still owe you a take.

I was just thinking about ‘Three Burials’. I’m a patient man J. Whenever you are ready. If you’re inspired for a ‘Highlander’ that would be cool. You know that with me it’s always the personal connection to whatever turns your crank.

No Country is a special kinda flick, eh? I love how Tommy Lee just looks like he’s resigned to the fact that he just can’t understand the why of what was happening.

I agree adventure movies are good fun. Saw this one years ago and remember enjoying. I didn’t know the same author of The Jungle Book wrote the original story. I wonder if there are any other notable films based on Rudyard Kipling’s writing besides the two mentioned?

John Huston had sense of adventure. A few of his films have that quality. African Queen/Treasures Sierra Madre/Beat the Devil. I think he really nailed it on this one. It walks a tight rope and manages to keep it from going off the rails.
I think it was done from a Kipling short story. Was Gunga Din one of his? Lord Jim is a film in the same vein (darker) but it’s based on a Conrad novel. Real good flick. I’ll be over in the next few days for some more of your takes.

Gunga Din dated for me. Beat the Devil worth it because of Huston, Bogart and Lorrie. Off beat. A curiosity for me. Lord Jim is the one. Dark adventure with good performances from O’Toole, Wallach, Mason, Hawkins, Jurgens. Good story.
