    Damn! Eclectic taste that’s for sure. Lately, I’ve been liking Larkin Poe, Greta Van Fleet, and Freddie King and the Marcus King Band. Are you more of a songs guy or albums guy? Just curious.

      Music guy! But Yeah I am an “albums guy” for sure. That’s how I started out as a kid. Obviously I like the individual songs but going back to the first Cream record it has always been about the album with individual songs on the side.
      I will jot down those titles for sure. Freddie I’m up with. Greta I’ve heard of. Marcus and Poe, you have me curious. Thanks.

        Me too! But lately it’s been a bit of both. Larkin Poe’s albums aren’t the best BUT their Tip of the Hat series on YouTube is something I like. A lot. Marcus’ band reminds me of some long-forgotten southern rock band.

      All about making great music with these guys. Jazz/rock/blues all thrown into their gumbo. Long jams but never boring. Rabid/loyal fan base. Been making great music for many moons. I’ll link ‘Blue Indian’ and ‘Dyin’ Man’ below. One is softer and the other kicks ass. Better to listen than for me to try to put into words. I love this band. Outside the “Pop” world. With your hunger for musical knowledge you will find them interesting. On the same musical level of Richard Thompson who we were just talking about.

    Great to see Sonny and Brownie in your collection. I saw them twice live at a folk and blues club in Switzerland in early 1970s. They were always in good form. Brownie McGee’s guitar playing was awesome. He doesn’t just made rhythmic strumming, he really did a good pickin on his Piedmont blues guitar. Sonny whooped and hollered with high energy.

    Here’s a few jazz vinyl albums I listened to a few nights ago: The Great London Concert (Ornette Coleman). A Swingin’ Affair (Dexter Gordon). Miles In The Sky (Miles Davis).

      I picked up on that “all over the map” thing at an early age.
      Oh man those titles got me hankering for those guys. I just listen to ‘Miles Ahead’. Ornette was one of the first jazz guys I got into (Shape Of Jazz To Come) and then Dexter after. Great stuff. You had to of seen ‘Round Midnight’ with him. I guess i’ll be listening to some more jazz this week. Thanks Neil.

    Whoa, CB! Slow down. Not only eclectic but so much. I could hardly get halfway through the Partridge Family’s Greatest Hits last week much less your fancy list. I think you’re the first blogger I’ve ever read who knew of or mentioned Widespread Panic. I found out about them some moons ago when I used to haunt the Allmans list. Yes, a really good band and I have an album or two somewhere, probably on cassette. I actually have a take planned on them but like you, not exclusive but, well, you’ll see once I get around to it.

    John Scofield – nice. Saw him once in a small club in NYC 10-12 years ago. Sat right the lip of the stage. Me and five fanboys at the table. As to Bela Fleck, I just found out he’s playing in town on the same bill with Chick Corea in spring of next year. Now, how the fuck can I not go to that?

    As to future listening, I wonder what your Spotify Release Radar would say? You probably confused it.

      I made this list a while back and just never got around to posting it (I like the Ali photo). I do delve into the pop scene once in a while (see Cat Stevens).
      These are all alums I own for the most part. I still take them for walks. ‘Panic’ will be getting some more love. Like to hear your take. The Scofield cooks. I take it you dug him. Bela and Chick, I’m in. I think with Bela the banjo might not appeal to a lot of people. I was onto him when he was a kid playing bluegrass.
      Yeah my Spotify (because of you and catchgroove) spits out some fantastic stuff. I cant believe how hip it is. I like to think that some super cool DJ is spinning discs just for me.
      I think I did a tap dance on my sisters Partridge Family record back when. She was all over that,whatever you call it.

        The Ali photo is nuts. I’d never seen it before. I looked it up. He actually had a record player in his car. The vinyl crowd will eat that up. Why not reel-to-reel? I dig Cat Stevens. “Father and Son” is a great tune. Scofield was excellent and I don’t listen to him enough. I’m not particularly a Bela or even banjo fan but that show sounds intriguing. I’m always up for listening to something I don’t know well just before I totally trash it.

        i listen to Spotify every single day. I tell some of my peers about it but they shrug like it’s some monstrously complicated technical thing and they can’t be bothered. Their loss. I usually listen to my own playlists but then sometimes I get lazy and listen to the canned ones. Just yesterday it was Steely Dan. Tomorrow, Partridges for sure. I kinda had the hots for Shirley Jones anyway.

        The Ali thing is so cool. Reel-To-Reel would have made more sense. I love the Cat. Scofield is one of those people that every time i listen to him I say”I should listen to him more”. I think with the Bela/Chick thing it would be more than intriguing. You know with that quality of musician it would be worth it.
        I’m totally with you on the Spot thing. Absolutely amazing. I’m going to stop thanking you, it might go to your head. Blows my mind. Steely Dan is always a good choice (See CB’s Listening Week).

      I could do an all day Oliver thing. I made this list a while back. Last week i was stuck in the ‘Fu” groove and today I’m doing the Songhoy Blues thing. Both thanks to 1537.

    Yes, the Ali photo is classic, I’ve never seen it before. I’ll second Jim’s applause for Widespread Panic, Neil’s applause for the jazz music, and Fox’s nod to Sonny and Brownie. (Have you heard Bill Evans’s “Village Vanguard Sessions”? I spun it this past weekend. Scintillating, smoky, romantic jazz.)

    As for suggestions, CB, I think you chimed in for my Maggie Roche tribute? Well, she has a new CD out, called “Where Do I Come From.” I highly recommend it – just reviewed it on Amazon. (Actually, Suzzy Roche produced it in tribute to her sister. Some of the Roche’s best songs. You can order from Suzzy’s website. I plan to tell Fox, since he’s a fan.)

    Lightnin Hopkins, Haggard, the best RFTC album, Petty, Fu Manchu, Giant Sand, Cooder… man, some great stuff there. That Hal Willner Weird Nightmare thing is quite striking… I’ll need to investigate.

    My big listens last week:

    Yir man Brood’s Shpritsz, Ha Ha Tonka, QotSA, some Morphine, Jesse Sykes, Cruzados, Tito & Tarantula, Earthless… JP Harris. Loads more… Mythic Sunship, Triumph, Howlin’ Wolf… Coltrane… Sturgil… Danny & The Champs… The Afghan Whigs… man…

    I’d recommend JP Harris for you, CB. Sometimes Dogs Bark at Nothing. Might be my album of the year.

      Just putting a take together on ‘Weird Nightmare’. Great album for so many reasons. One of my favorite covers.

        A great cover… leapt out at me there. I’ll look forward to your take. I was putting together some ramblings about a Gelb release… Giant Giant Sand. Been listening to that one for the first time in a while.

        Dogs is great, I reckon. Some really great tunes on there that hang around the territory of Willie, Waylon, Kris, Haggard… great stuff.

        I’m currently listening to Israel Nash’s Rain Plans. You ever heard that guy? Man, he’s pretty special. Loads of Neil Young vibes, but with a psychedelic palette.

        I’m definitely rocking the honky tonk of JP. He’s doing it right. Enough grit in his voice and dirt on his strings to convince me he’s one of the best I’ve heard in a while.

        Nash is great too. Been a favourite of mine since Barn Doors… but he just keeps getting better, I reckon. His sound has evolved.

      Yes I did and do Books. Just did a take on Willner/Mingus Meditations. Our buddy Charlie Watts shows up on skins on a couple of cuts.
      Check out the Clairtone Project G Stereo system. That funky neighbor of mine has one of only a few hundred left. It will blow your mind. I’ll be over in the next few days to see what you’re up to.

    That’s quite an amazing list, both in terms of breadth and length. There’s also a good deal of music I don’t know.

    For example, I had not known Widespread Panic. Based on sampling a few tracks from that album, I like what I’m hearing and will further check them out.

    Lately, I’ve been all over the White Album and Electric Ladyland, given the massive reissues of both albums.

      I think ‘Panic’ will be up your alley. Labels are put on thing to give a point of reference I guess. The proof is in the listening. I guess they get the Allman tag because they like to jam and are from down south.
      I’d be leaning towards that ‘Ladyland’ big-time.

    You’ve been busy! I remember discovering The Platters thanks to the Twin Peaks revival. I guess David Lynch is the right age to have grown up with that music. The Brian Eno Desert Island Selection I’m not familiar, sounds interesting.

      Lynch always uses great tunes. The Eno record covers a few of his first albums. A taste of Eno.
