Music Single : CCR – I Put a Spell On You

download (3)

Time for a little CCR. This is the sort of music that CB was exposed to at an early age and it really shaped his tastes. When you hear this or when I heard this it leaves a certain impression that’s hard to shake. It made me a lover of hard driving rock music.

It’s loud, rough, driving rock n roll. The rhythm is relentless with Fogerty adding his great vocals and that guitar I love. Does anyone play and sing with more passion than John.? No. The first couple CCR songs I heard were covers. I didn’t know it at the time and it didn’t matter. They take the  Screamin Jay Hawkins (They had good luck with songs written by guys named Hawkins. Suzie Q was another) tune and put their sound to it. So much to like in this one. It put a spell on CB. The Creedence sound I dig all day. This still sounds soooo good! I do takes on songs that I absolutely dig. This is definitely one of those.

Put it on, crank it, get evil and press repeat and press repeat again and again and again …

This is great, although I tend to gravitate to Fogerty’s own compositions.

I think tunes like this helped him pen all his original tunes. He was and is always calling on his musical influences.

Yes, I can see how that would work. Worked out what style worked for him.

A great cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins most well known song. Fogerty puts a wonderful new spin and flavour to the track… and it’s still as menacing as the original too.

There’s a great category: songs you can leave on repeat. CCR would poll well, methinks!

These guys could rock. I always liked Doug Clifford’s drumming a lot. I think that he and Stu Cook have a band called Credence Revisited, or something like that. See ya, CB —-

I think you and I have established “These guys can rock” question. CCR was a solid rock band that has stood the test of time. I’ll be over for a visit.

Another great tune that’s right up my alley. And, yes, to borrow from David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” back cover: “To be played at maximum volume.” 🙂

I think I was pretty clear on how much I dig this piece of rock n roll. I did neglect to say “TURN IT UP!”

I think you did a recent take on Fogerty and ZZ Top. I’ll have to take a look. I betcha that was “LOUD”.

La Futura? I know “Chartreuse,” which sounds like a remake of “Tush,” my favorite ZZ Top tune. BTW, recently, I read Billy Gibbons is working on a blues solo album.

Yeah, it’s really good. I’ve played it a few times over the weekend… better than Perfectamundo and, essentially, sounds much like a ZZ Top album.

Have listened to it as well in the meantime. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before, but Billy Gibbons is a cool dude, and this is pretty solid blues rock.

And, yes, I also agree you can’t deny the ZZ Top influence. It starts right with the opener that has a “La Grange” vibe.

It’s very much an extension of La Futura, if you ask me. I like it a whole lot.

CB has no problem with Nina’s take, CCR was planting the rock n roll seed into my young mind and my first exposure is usually the prominent one. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about cool covers and redos. Good idea for a take.

Great tune for sure. I did a One Song/Three Versions on this a while back that included the aforementioned Ms. Simone.

Finally getting around to listening to your show. Tried to drop a couple of comments on your site. Don’t know if they took. Anyway great show! I will be back for more. Definitely worth the time. Liking the whole vibe. Lord Kitchener’s little tribute was fun. I did a take on Garland Jeffrey’s nod to his hero’s. ‘Hail Hail Rock N Roll’. You might dig it. You have the perfect presence for the show. Later. CB

If you’re not familiar with Garland Jeffreys you might find a treasure.. I’m about an hour and a half into the show. My comment on your take looks like it’s still trying to get through. (Let me know if you get it) When you play stuff like the Impression, Ben E King , Everlys you have my attention. A good late night listening show.

One of the great takes on this tune, for sure. Retains some of its grit and menace. A great tune. Also nice to see some CCR… I’ve been listening to Doug Sahm’s Groover’s Paradise a fair bit over the last few weeks and Clifford and Cook are, eh, cooking on there.

I’ll have to give that a listen. Always disappointing when real good bands split but that’s the way it goes sometimes. Even though John was the front man the other guys added to the sound.
